Hi John, Gail Compton of St. Louis also has copies of Compton Quarterly. Im
getting copies, hopefully to day. Ill contact Leigh Smith and see if these
can be put up on the website. The only other published info on Comptons Im
aware of is 1. The History of Davidson County TN, published by Clayton in
1880, I have copies of the Compton pages. and 2. History of Freestone Co. TX,
Vols. 1 & 2, I have both of these, they deal with Comptons from the W. S.
Compton line, starting about 1850. I have searched the St. Louis Public
library for other Compton stuff but came up with zilch.

Greetings,

I am seeking more information about my Compton ancestors in old Maryland.

I am descended from

THOMAS COMPTON, who was born circa 1715 and died in 1749 in Maryland. He was a land owner and some of his land was in Calvert County, Maryland. In 1745, he married Mary Skinner, who had been married twice before. Mary was born circa 1695 and died circa 1769 in Calvert County, Maryland. Her first husband was Roger/Robert Wheeler, and after he died, she married Joseph Wilkinson. After he died, she married Thomas Compton, and after Thomas Compton died, she married Dr. James Weems, the father of her son-in-law. Thomas Compton and Mary Skinner had children, including a daughter:

ANN COMPTON who married Col. John Weems (1737-1813), son of Dr. James Weems. Some sources give her forename as Catherine.

I hope to find out more information about these ancestors as well as the names of the parents and siblings of Thomas Compton.

The Compton surname for these ancestors sometimes appears with variant spellings, including Crumpton, Crompton, and Cumpton.

Please contact me if you have information about these ancestors. Thanks.

Clark, Barry and Compton researchers:

Hezekiah Briscoe was a son of John Briscoe (1678-1734) and Eleanor Williamson of St. Mary's Co., MD. John Briscoe was a son of Philip Briscoe (1647-1725) and Susannah Swann of Charles County, Maryland. This is from info compiled by Carol Mitchell of 128 Wray-Large Road, Clairton, PA 15025.

My ancestor, Samuel Compton (born 1716), was a son of Matthew Compton (ca 1680-1747) and Susana Briscoe (died 1740-1745) of Charles County, Maryland. Susanna was a sister to John Briscoe and aunt to Hezekiah.

I am searching this time for H. L. or J. COMPTON and James C. SANDERS, both shown in the 1850 census of Smith Co. South Division. I need to locate a Tabitha COMPTON who married a Sanders in 1850. He is shown in Rutherford Co as a single man in 1850 census, but I cannot find her. He is M. S., Mekin, or Mankin SANDERS. Smith Co History says that J. C. SANDERS was a tanner on Hewitt Road.

Charles has been gracious to send some copies to me. Thank you Charles.

I was reading everything and in newsletter number 6 dated August 1, 1978 on page 2

"We are still trying to determine what happened to the descendants of the following family:

1860 Census Greenville Co., S.C., Fort Motley Div. Sept. 14, 1860 pg. 171

James Compton 24 M Machinist property $50.00 born SC
Rebecca Compton 25 F housekeeper born SC
James Compton 4/12 M born SC

This James Compton was son of Jeremiah Compton who was son of Norris who was son of Aquilla. We have never been able to connect up with any of the descendants of this family."

I have the above census information in my records - and have thought they might be my ancestors, but when I saw it in the newsletter and the fact that no one knew anything about descendants - i'm beginning to feel strongly that it is my family.

You see, my ggrandfather James Franklin Compton was orphaned during the War of Northern Aggression. He was small and did not remember his parents names.  He and his younger sister Martha went to an orphanage. He is believed to have been born about 1858; she about 1861.

Does anyone know anything about the James mentioned in the census above? My biggest question is if family was living in Greenville County between 1860 and 1870, why would these children go to an orphanage?

I would appreciate any information,

Again, thanks Charles. By the way, I hope you enjoyed your vacation - i sure enjoyed the Bahamas.

I received copies of the Quarterly from both Charles Compton of AL and Gail Compton of St. Louis. Between the two of them I believe I now have a complete set. From no. 1 thru 7 by Roy Compton and 1 thru 3 by W. D. Compton. For others not familar with this newsletter it started off as Aquilla Compton Family Organization and later became Compton Family Quarterly. It seems to be somewhat better documented than Comptonology. Note to Leigh Smith, can/could the newsletters be linked on the website? If not, I will make copies (at cost) for anyone who might want them.

William named a daughter Elizabeth Briscoe Compton. Ive only been able to identify one Briscoe that has any promise: William Compton married Susanah Briscoe, widow of Hezikiah Briscoe, 19 november 1758 in Charles Co., Trinity Parish, MD. Susanah maiden name was Willson. Ive not been able to track them further. Does anyone have any info on this William/Susanah Briscoe Compton or William Compton of Nashville?

I have been reading some of my ancient correspondence and will share what info I have found:

All entries are from different folks.

"...in Amelia Co., VA Joel Compton married Ann or Nancy Chapman who was the stepdaughter of Oney League." ( I have info on Oney)

"Alonzo Compton originally from Knoxville, TN dob July 25, 1850 married Sarah Jane Snyder dob August 16, 1863. Their daughters: Lillie Belle b. Mar 25, 1887, Mamie b May 3, 1889, Mattie b Apr 15, 1891, Julia b Feb 24, 1896 married Alexander Armstrong, and Ella Mae b Jun 12, 1901. Family storied from an elderly aunt say that while still living in the mountains of Rutherford County and while the five daughters were still very young, Alonzo left the mountains to go look for work. One story says he went to Tenn. and another says that he went to Charleston, SC where he was working as a roofer on the Citadel, where he supposedly fell off the roof and died. In any event, after he left the mountains looking for work he was never seen again by the family."

"John Compton married Amy executed deed in 1808 Laurens Co., SC mentions son John. son John married Martha Sloan and he died before 1850. Their son Robert James married soon after 1850 and moved to Hempstead Co., Ark. The family of James Compton in the 1850 census Laurens Co., S. C. was related to Robert James."

Hi Barry, Thanks for the response, This is what I have on the Compton/Briscoe bunch - all came from info found in Compton Quarterly: William Compton m. Susanah Briscoe, widow of Hezh. Briscoe, 19 Nov. 1758.
John Wilson Compton b. 15 Jan 1760
Ann Compton, b 23 Aug. 1761
Willson Compton, b 12 Oct. 1763
Walter Briscoe and Elizabeth Compton were united in holy state of matrimony 13 may 1762.
The above is from Charles County - Trinity Parish, register Accession #12645, Maryland Hall of Records, p 120B.
on p114 B there are records of Elizabeth Compton, dau. of Matthew and Rachel and several others.  There must be some tie in - just cant find where.

Cousins,

the members who posted their lineage I have added to my database hoping on a
connection and with the intent of putting what I had on the site.

You are correct about the migration. These Comptons seemed to belong to the
witness protection program. They slithered around from place to place leaving
as little a trail as possible. It would be helpful to have the migrations
plotted.

The first thing I believe we need is for everyone to submit their direct
lineage and let me get that entered and posted to the site. After that, I'll
take any and all suggestions and help.

I do have more info to post on the site. Whatever everyone thinks.

Also have Compton/Philpott line(separate file) and Compton/Paxton line again, separate file. Philpott line goes back to 1300s with some English Compton connections - my connection with them starts much later. Anyway Im rambling. Let me know the format.

Hi Cousins:
This is a good question that Clark raises. I feel that ANY vehicle moving genealogical data to and from us is in demand, necessary and a few years late.
Let's look at some history. Comptonology went 13 years and then came the end...the issue having the index. This end came among the incessant pleas of C. V. Compton (the editor) to "submit your family information and questions". Over and over his request went, in issue after issue.....then the index, the end.
Next came a 25 year dry spell of no common publication, then Compton Quarterly starts up in 1977 as a newsletter by Roy Compton, very much like a person with a lot to say on email today. Roy also expanded the newsletter to cover ALL Comptons instead of just those descended from Aquilla. Roy kept this thing going to issue # 7 (1978) and then turned the reins over to W.D. Compton. The very first thing W. D. Compton says is "...I Will...need your help. I need as much material as you can send me to fill out the newsletter." January of 1980 sees the end of the newsletter where W. D. Compton explains that the newsletter is coming to a halt because he doesn't have the "material to fill the pages". What I learn from this is that we have had three willing and able editors to call it quits because of a lack of contribution(s) from the readership. We can all sit back and form a "hallelujah chorus" and an "amen corner" (Oops, sorry, southern terms), calling for the reinstatement of the Quarterly, Comptonology, or what ever we wish to call it, but it boils down to the same thing....US. Our degree of contribution to the publication will decree the ultimate doom or success of the publication. The question is NOT are you interested. You already proved your interest by joining this mailing list. The question is, will you contribute to the publication...work, in other words ? Will you send the editor something to edit so the reader has something to read ? Each must become a major contributor and ultimate reader. OK, here's my "amen", yes, I want to see it start back. And yes, I'll get off my duff and contribute, but, I'll wait until somebody else starts because I won't be the first one ! I have a few more thoughts on the same subject but will spare you until tomorrow. (Subject Hint: What if the publication starts up again and it fails again, for any reason) ?

Hello Folks,

To send your lineage to me, please either send a GEDCOM or just type it into
the e-mail. I can accept wordpad or straight ascii. Please do not encode in
mime format. I have a decoder but it does not work on all mime extensions.
If you absolutely must encode, please use binary.

I received a GEDCOM from someone yesterday. Unfortunately I can't find the e-
mail. I had downloaded the attachment but it was in mime format and I could
not decode It was produced in FTM 4.0 and contains the following names:

William Ervin Compton TX
Albert Maywood Compton TX

If this is yours, please resend a straight GEDCOM. Thanks, and I'm sorry for
the problems.

I am researching the families of James and JOhn Compton in Loudoun and Fairfax counties, Virginia. I think the patriarch was Zebedee Compton, who died before 1820. James died about 1840, followed by his son John, prior to 1850. Next is Ludwell Compton, born about 1802, died before 1855 in Virginia. Ludwell Compton's sons were: John R., Rozier, Ludwell, Albert S., and Sydney.

Results have been disappointing so far. Only nine (including me) responses.
Dont believe that would be enough to get the newsletter started. Lets all get
our heads together and see if we can get this going. William H. Compton has
many Compton files - granted some of them are not documented and some outright
wrong, but we seem to have a number of people researching different branches -
60 on the list now - I would think that more folks would be interested.

Hi All,

I contacted the National Archives for a complete US list of where one could
obtain the Federal census. The information was transmitted via 4 emails, so
this is the first of 4. Maybe this information will be useful to someone.
This is their reply:

This is an extremely INCOMPLETE list of the institutions which have
Federal census records for the United States available for researcher
use. DO NOT expect these facilities to do research for you.

Facilities Where You Can Do Research

NOTE: Much of this list was compiled by calling these facilities, or by
surfing the internet. For public libraries, I was generally told the library
had census microfilm for that particular county; I then extrapolated the
library's additional holdings by determining what else was on the
microfilm by using National Archives microfilm catalogs.

would need to do to contribute, I am willing to try I just need pushing in
the right direction. I feel that there is a wealth of Comptons out there for
me to find, all completely lost kin. But I am looking. Let me know if I can
help. Jamie Joyce

This is something that I don't know about so I am putting it on the Compton

Hi Lem;

My name is Shirley McCowin and I am serching for my Compton relation. Pat Johnson in Texas sent me your e-mail address. She said you probably knew more about the Comptons than anyone she knew. Perhaps you could help me. I don't have a lot to go on but will give you
all I know.

Hi Boys n' Girls:
Doris Compton Canon's .ged came through at this location with no problem. I was able to put it in my FTW program and read it as well as I could my own. Speaking of which, Leigh, here is mine (as a starter), attached hereto. What AOL does to this thing in the transit , I do not know, nor can I control. If you don't receive it in a usable fashion, there's always a floppy and the US Mail. Please advise. I am sending this to the entire group, for you all are welcomed to have a look at it. I encourage it.

Clark, What does Mr.. W. H. consider to be "interest" ? In other words, what is it going to take to get that Comptonology cranked up again ? If he's has unknown and heretofore undistributed genealogical Compton information, I guess it's a "no brainer" to declare it needed ! So what will it take to get it moving ?

I just received a package of some 40 or so land deeds, law suits, land  grants, tax records, you name it, from the South Carolina Department of Archives and History. I have been and still am in the process of translating this stuff so I can turn around and distribute it to all of you. It is for Comptons John, William, Henry T., Thomas, James, Samuel, William, Elizabeth and a few more Comptons. I am doing John Compton of Laurens County, SC first. He is the one who came here from England, they say, had a son John who later moved to Arkansas (Hempstead County). There is a huge Compton family associated with John and his wife Nancy P. Craig (if memory serves me).
Leigh and/or Clark....tell me how do you want this information sent out
......assuming that you do.. Just tell me what to do.
I received a phone call from a local genealogists who informed me that
there was a 60 something page folder with Compton (and variant spelling)
information available from a guy in Montana. I have already ordered this
pig in the poke, so let's see what's there. (W. Yates, I think). Anyway,
this I will freely share as well as the possible total embarrassment which
might ensue! (What was it that was said about "...a fool and his money are
soon separated")?
Charlie

Clark,

I'm interested, I just haven't replied because I didn't see any other replies. (yeah I know, any excuse.......)

Anyway.

I have very little to contribute, but will what I have. I'm sure we could get something going, my question is can we keep it so. If W.D. Compton has the interest in being responsible for publishing(?) the newsletter we would all have to make the commitment to keep it going.

One suggestion I might make is that we can use the e-mails from this list in the newsletter - kinda the Compton digest form . I don't know. I will participate if it gets going. Comptons are beginning to come out of the woodwork, and so far all of our lines seem to be pretty separate so there is a variety.........

I'm just babbling long past my point.

Thanks for the information you have received on the Comptonology. We would
need 30-35 members to make to go. I think the membership should be $15.00
per year for 4 issues per year.
what do you think? We have about 1,000 family charts we have collected over
the years on Comptons in USA, England, Scotland and Canada. You stated that
you received the Aquillia papers. You may or may not know we did a private
printing of Aquillia's Book back in 1986 and also the Maryland Compton's we
were thinking about reprinting it some time in March or April we do not know
the price for we have not been to the printers as of this date. We have been
putting together some new data for both books. Mr. Compton started several
Compton Books but did not finish them. We have many pages he started and
never finished. He started a good one on the Compton's of Wilson Co. TN. and VA

I have most of the old issues of Comptonology. I would be interested in subscribing to a new Comptonology as long as the issues will include new information and won't be just reprints of the old stuff. And I'd be happy to submit the Compton data I've collected to the editor in order to keep the newsletter going. I hope more people will do the same. Everyone needs to contribute - we can't keep it going if all we do is subscribe.

I am a semi-new member of the list, but haven't posted my data yet, so here
it is. Due to some strange circumstances in my families past, I never knew
any of my COMPTON ancestors and would love to correspond with anyone who
descends from this family.
