The History of Halloween (Excerpts taken from the NCD)

Several hundred years before Christ the Celts inhabited what is now France, Germany, England, Scotland and Ireland. Celtic priests were called
Druids. These people were eventually conquered by the Romans. Greek and Roman
writings dating from about 200 B.C. and very early records in Ireland give us much information about the Druids.

Greek and Roman writings about the Druids swell heavily on the frequent and barbaric human sacrifices. The ancient Irish texts say little about  human acrifices, but tell much of the use of magic to raise storms, lay  curses, kill by use of spells, and create magical obstacles.

Davies, a 16th century writer traced his family back to the Druid priest who fought against Caesar, describes the human sacrifices and the secret sacrifices still performed today. By A.D. 47, Rome finally defeated the Druids in England and outlawed human sacrifices. The few remaining Druids went underground.
Today their are still people claiming to be direct descendants of the Druids who still practice their religion including human sacrifice at Stonehenge.

November 1st was the Celtic new year. October 31st was celebrated by theDruids with many sacrifices and a festival honoring their sun god Samhain, thelord of the dead. They believed that sinful souls were in a place of torment and would be released only if Samhain was pleased with their sacrifices.Irish records tell of the fascination Monks had with the power of the Druids and many Druids became important members of their monasteries. Pope Gregory the Great decided to incorporate the Druid holiday into the church. He made the proclamation, “They are no longer to sacrifice beasts to the devil, but they may kill them for food to praise God, and give thanks to the giver for all his bounty.” Pope Gregory the lll moved the festival of the church of October 31st to November 1st and called it All Hallows or All Saints’ Day.

The founding fathers of America refused to permit Halloween to be observed because they knew it was a pagan holiday. In the 1840’s there was a terrible potato famine in Ireland (much caused by the English), which sent thousands of Catholic Irish to America. They brought with them Halloween.

The custom of going door to door asking for food and candy goes back to the time of the Druids. The souls of the dead were thought to throng about the houses of the living and were greeted with banquets laden tables. People greatly feared theses spirits and thought the spirits would harm them if they did not
give sacrifices to appease Samhain. They carved demonic faces into turnips and squash and placed a candle in them to scare away the evil spirits from their homes.

The tradition of bobbing for apples and giving out nuts came from Rome  to the Druid New Years eve. Romans worshipped Pomona the goddess of the  harvest. They then added the harvest festival to Halloween.

Very little archeological evidence of Druids has been found, but there  is an excellent agreement between the Roman and Irish documents. Both clearly state that the knowledge of the Druids was never committed to writing but passed from generation to generation by oral teachings. This was to protect the secrets. Davies indicates that he came under much persecution by his family for putting into writing his information about the Druids. The Druids today still continue on with their secret society.
The widespread problem of harmful substances such as razor blades,
drugs,
poisons, needles etc. being placed in Halloween treats is no accident
here in America. People do it to be mean and many are thought to be Druids  carrying on their tradition.

It gives us all something to think about. Personally I don’t celebrate Halloween. I see no point in it at all and my kids could care less.

Blessings,
Kathleen

Hello;

I am Jeanne Compton Koopman, I was born in Cumberland Co. Ky. and now split my time between Florida and my home in Northern Kentucky. I started tracing some of my lines several years, but my g grandfather Lewis Compton has been the most difficult. He was indentured in 1847 in Cumberland Co. to David Garmmon, we have just recently found two of his brother's Pinckney D, b. 12 June 1844 and Joseph, b. abt 1845 and a sister Mary Jane, b. abt 1842, all in Adair Co. 1850 census. They were each living with different families, we do not know if these families were related or not. We found a death certificate for Pinckney D, and it list his parents as William Compton and Sally Mills.

We are now looking for information on William Compton and Sally Mills. My other lines are, Thrasher, Davidson, Scott, Turner, Ross and Roark. We also work on my husbands lines but they are recent immigrants. Any help will be appreciated and I will be glad to share.

Hi,

My Comptons start with Edward L. 1802 North Carolina and Susan Carelock,  the parents of John Berry 1825, in Illinois and Samuel. I don't know if they has anymore children or not. Or if Susan died young and he remarried.
John had a son William Cornelius born around 1850. This is the only William I have in your time period and I don't at this point know anything about him. Sorry I am not more help.

Kathleen

Dear Sir:

I don't know if I sent my web site address to your or not, but I would like to. It is not a famcy site, but it does have a bit of information and I am trying to expand it with more names.

I would also like to know about the information that I got from a Comptonology paper that was printed around 1950. Which issue I do not know. It had some names in it that I was looking for. It was on John Compton and his wife Catherine Davis. They apparently had 5 boys and 1 girl. The last boy being born in 1812. I do not have the girls name. I would like very much to get a copy of that issue. Would you be able to help me with this. If so I would appreciate it very much.

I also would like to know if I had signed up to receive the new Comptonology editions. I an sure that I sent  my $15.00 earlier this year or late last year. Would you please check this out and let me know? Before I sign off the names of the
boys that I received are:

John Compton; William Compton; Garrett Compton; Jackson Compton; Marshall
Compton B: 5 March 1811, Pl: , Ross Co., Ohio? and Nelson Compton B: 27 Nov. 1812 in Ross Co.,
Ohio. Died 1 Feb. 1903 Smith Twp., (Churubusco), Whitley Co., Indiana.
Married:

Hello

Does anyone know the current email address for Randall Fields? He goes
by the name RWFields on the web. Last year he provided information to
Clark Compton about Hezekiah Crumpton and I would like to ask him some

I am interested in exchanging data with anyone researching Hezekiah
Crumpton of Wilkes County, NC (1750-1821).

Thanks

Abraham L. Compton (c. 1873);
Elizabeth Compton (c. 1875);
Emma Compton (c. 1877);
Elbert Compton (c. 1879) taken from the 1880 Federal Census of Pike County, Ky.

and Luke B. Compton (c. 1884) taken from his marriage license to (1)Nan Day and (2) Alice Newsom.

While my records may not be complete in regard to John W. and his family, I show no record of King Harrison Compton as a child of John W. Compton. On my next trip to Pikeville, I will check the marriage records for King H. and forward the info.

I have more info re the ancestors and descendants of Leander "Lee" if you are interested.

Hi Susan and welcome to the Compton family.

My name is Kathleen and have some Comptons in my line. I don't see a connection with you, unfortuanately. I am related to a John Berry Compton who married Polly Mary Berry, all from Texas. John's father is Edward L. who married Susan Carelock. From what I am told, and I have no documentation on this, Edward was from North Carolina, born abt. 1802. I was curious about James Compton brother of your ancestor John Compton ll. Do you have any information on him? In my Comptom family there are many Johns, James, Williams. So many similar names. I am sorry I am no help to you. If I see something I will let you know.

Thank you for any help.
Blessings,
Kathleen

Susan,
Thought the following information may be of use to you. From the Pike County Court Clerk's Office:

King Harrison Compton married Elizabeth Osborn 15 May 1886. This marriage is recorded in Register 14, pp 593 and Register 15, pp 151.

His age is listed as 18; his occupation as farmer; his birthplace as Pike County, KY; birthplace of groom's father listed as Pike County, KY; birthplace of groom's mother as Russell County, VA.

Her age is listed as 23; her birthplace as Pike County, KY; birthplace of bride's father listed as Pike County, KY; birthplace of bride's mother listed as Floyd County, KY.

They were married at the house of Lee Compton in the presence of John Damron and John W. Adkins by Richard
Ratliff.

Sorry, I don't have John W. Compton's death certificate; I got the death certificate info from the University of Kentucky's computer.

I am attaching partial Compton workup sheets and a partial Compton pedigree list. Please keep in mind that these are works in progress as I get the time to transfer my information from hard copy to computer.

If the info I'm sending generates any questions, please ask and I'll try to answer.

The info I'm attaching is in WordPerfect 6.1 format. It will also open in Word for Windows 95 version 7.0. If you can't read the attachments, let me know and I'll convert them to text format and try again.

I saw your posting to the Compton page in regards to Comptons of Pike Co, KY.

That book is NOT in either of the two large libraries that I frequent

in your copy for us. I am specifically interested in the Berrys and
Comptons in the South Carolina area. I have your recent post reference
Edward L. Compton + Susan Carelock. Where in NC was this family located,
and did they have only two children (John Berry and Samuel) ?
Would this be the only Compton mentioned in the book ? If it is extremely
lengthy disregard the request and I will try to find the book in Atlanta.

Hi All:
Earlier this date I posted a message to Kathleen about a Edward L. Compton.
I sent the message and then left to go eat. All morning long that name kept
bugging me and finally I remembered where I saw it.....in Arkansas Land
Patents ! It may not be the same person, that's for her to decide, but for
all the rest of you, there are 28 matches to the search of "Compton". Here
are the names that come up:

Benjamin L
Cornelius
Edward L.
Eli R.
George S.
James A.
James
Java W.
John T.
John
Martha
Martin L.
Perry
Richard S.
Robert B.
Robert J.
Thomas S.
William A.
William C.
William D.
William P.
Wilson

Here's how to access this information. Go to http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/
Enter your zip code over in the box requested for it. Then select the state
of interest. (All the above names came up in Arkansas, but you can enter
other states as well, as you wish). In the PATENT DESCRIPTION box, type
"Compton" for the patentee's last name. Then select genealogical search and
it will return all of those names I listed above. You can then select the
document number and land description. You can get the actual document off
line ! Happy hunting

Charlie Compton just posted on Comptong List how to find Comptons
(or any surname) for land patents in AL., AK., FL., MS, etc. etc.

Go to http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/ enter your zip code over in the
box requested for it. Then select the State or interest. In the
PATENET DESCRIPTION box, key in "Crumpton" for the patentee's last name;
then select genealogical search; you can select the document number and land
description; you can get actual viewing of
original document!! I tried to copy, but got only a portion of document.
I got all Crumpton and Comptons in AL and MS, and now trying to
place them all. A very good site: I notice many of our Crumptons are
Comptons (especially eary John Crumpton of Bibb County; all of his
acquisitions are Compton and one of Luke is Compton). A good
puzzle to work on. Sincerely, Dan

Hi Dan;
Thank you thank you. Got the find today. I was excited.
On your stapled batch James Compton and sheets on each of his children,
there are no children listed (James' grandchildren)
on the sheets. Do you have that information? I do have some
if you don't.
Thanks for the census sheet. That is valuable.
On the John Crumpton sheet, I think the John who was born ca. 1755 mentioned
as Amie on the land record could be
looked at more closely because Levi, James and the others
would have been born when the father was to old and there is to big of a gap
between these folks.
Now, what can I share with you?
Thanks.

Hi Folks, just a quick note to remind everyone that we do have two or three
addresses that cause rejection notices to come back to the sender on the list.
Please do not worry about it. When you get a rejection notice just delete it.
I dont know why it happens, we double check addresses, but occassionally on
the first delivery attempt some of the addresses reject. Your messages do get
through. Lets keep the info flowing.
