Lorena, have you seen #987 and related posts on this Family Forum. Hiram Compton
who is, stated to be the father of Herndon Compton b ca 1821, is reputed to be
the son of John Compton Jr and Eleanor McQuire. John Jr. is reputed to be the
son of John Compton and Rebecca ?. It's probably not a coincidence for the name
Herndon to show up in this Tazewell Co, Va family. Maybe the elder John, with
wife Rebecca, and your James are related in some fashion. I also recall seeing
the name Larkin or Herndon some time ago in a marriage or death record for
?Buchanan? Co, Va. I think the record indicated a relation to a Bart Compton.
There is a James Compton mentioned in early Russell Co, Va records in the late
1780's or early 1790's. I don't recall the nature of the record but I found it
at the Russell Co, Va site on the internet. My guess is that he was mentioned in
an early order book record or an early deed.

Desire info on
the following family group, especially before 1826. From Comptonology I have the
info on the Comptons in Russell Co, VA.
James COMPTON/CRUMPTON was b. abt. 1753. He was residing in Annapolis, MD, when
he enlisted in the Revolutionary War on 14 Feb. 1777 as a private in Capt.
Nathaniel Ewing's Co., 1st Maryland Reg't. commanded by Col. John Stone. He was
discharged 25 April 1779.
James m. Frances HERNDON near Stones Meeting House in Caswell Co, NC, in the
early 1780s. On Oct. 29, 1818, James COMPTON appears in the Guilford Co, NC,
Superior Court of Law and makes a declaration for a pension, which he receives.
Around 1828 the family moves to Russell Co, VA, where James dies 10 March 1832.
In Russell Co, VA, Frances COMPTON applies and receives pension benefits.
James's pension papers indicate the family was large and moved around a lot. The
"documented" children of James and Frances COMPTON are: 1) David COMPTON, b. abt.
1786, and married Polly ELMORE 14 Nov 1807 in Orange Co, NC. David moves to
Russell Co, VA, where he dies. 2) Polly COMPTON, b. abt. 1800. 3) Clary COMPTON,
b. abt. 1802. 4) Nancy COMPTON, b. abt. 1804.
In the time frame that James COMPTON was in Guilford Co, NC, several COMPTON
marriage bonds were issued and which I think are some of the missing children:
1) Tilmon STORY and Betsey CLUMPTON/COMPTON on 3 Feb. 1817. This couple
eventually moves to Orange Co, IN, where they both die in the 1830s. Known
children are Mary, Rebecca, Nancy and Elizabeth Story. 2) Larkin COMPTON and
Beckey ANDREW (dau. of Curtis) on 4 Nov 1818. This couple also moves to Orange
Co, IN, and Beckey dies in the 1830s. Larkin marries again to Mary "Polly"
Leonard Doan and Elizabeth Simmons Carroll Bailey. Larkin d. 27 Jan. 1866 in
Orange Co, IN. 3) John GRISSOM and Fanney CRUMPTON on 11 Sept. 1819. 4) James
CRUMPTON and Mary WHIT/WHITE on 18 Feb. 1825. This couple is found on the 1850
census for Guilford Co, NC.

Seeking
information on a william and zachariah Compton reportedly from North Carolina
who settled in Rhea County Tenn about 1815 or so with father William? How do
they connect with other North Carolina Comptons. Can you help? I believe that
William Sr. was also in the Revolution and was born 1850-60 or so.
You might seek information on your lines on the family page of the descendants
of Henry Compton. John was an early immigrant to Charles County Maryland. John's
will was probated in 1717 or so. James was one of John's sons. The many family
members went to Kentucky, Indiana, Virginia and elsewhere.
