The Guys in the Photo

Names provided by Harry E. Yates 1910 The photo above is a rare and special source document for the Yates related family based out of Grantsburg, Indiana. It is a source document because we have the photo original and a document listing the name of each person written by the author's grandfather, Harry E. Yates. The photo was taken we believe on May 23, 1910. This is my best conclusion for several reasons, the guy in the middle is my Grandfather, Harry Elmer Yates who was born and raised in Grantsburg. He married Jessie Leah Laswell that day and she likewise was born and raised in Grantsburg. We have other photos of the day appearing to have him tricked out in his Sunday best clothes. We also have a badly faded decorative marriage certificate of the day. Be sure to check out the photos closer by using the viewer on the right menu.

He was buried in Hamilton Roberson Cemetery, English, Crawford Co., IN. Laban Gregory was the son of Nancy Snowden and Milton (aka Minton) Gregory. Milton died in the poor farm in 1856 but Nancy and the kids are living with Nancy's parents, Joseph and Nancy Newkirk Snoden (Snowden) in Sterling Township. Nancy Sr. was a Newkirk, daughter of Cornelius Newkirk and maybe Elizabeth Powell.

A story from one of the descendants is as follows: I am descended from him through my grandmother. Everyone has their story and you can be sure this first Laban had quite a story at how he came to reside in English, Indiana so many years ago. After being sued for a paternity suit, and lost, he sued 6 months later for custody and won. With that win he and his family left for Kentucky for a year and then ended up in English, Indiana. The separated Gregory's lost touch of each other for many years.

Laban married Didamie Nash. Didamie was born about 1841, They had the following children: Laban M. Gregory was born about 1865 in IN: Julia A. Gregory was born in Mar 1867. Labe Gregory served in Co K, 38th Indiana Volunteers with Harry E. Yates's Grandfather and was in the area when he died in Atlanta. A recent portion of a letter written to John's Widow indicates that Labe may carry some money back to her. "Date: July 19, 1864; Author: George W. Riggle; Addressee: Elizabeth Roberson Yates; Location: North of Atlanta, GA ; He says Dear Sister, I wrote to you on the 15th of the month about your husband and how he got killed and there was a letter delivered for him from you and I thought I would answer you and let you know how his business stands. He provides a summary of his efforts by telling Elizabeth he has gotten his notes and accounts; John had two thirty dollars notes, one eight dollar note and a thirteen dollar note and some accounts. George says he can't say how much all of the accounts amount to but as soon as payday comes he will collect them and send it by Laban Gregory and sooner if I can".
