Russell "Teed" Hoult, 82, of Chrisman died (Feb. 4, 2004) at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, Ind. He was born Feb. 28, 1921, in Chrisman, the son of Matthew and June (Jamison) Hoult. He married Opal Martin Bennett Nov. 25, 1964, in Chrisman. She preceded him in death Jan. 24, 2000. Survivors include one stepson, Jim Bennett of Chesterton, Ind.; three granddaughters, one greatgrandson and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one stepson. Mr. Hoult was a retired painter and a U.S. Army vetern of World War II. He was a member of Chrisman American Legion Post #477 and the Bloomfield Masonic Lodge #148. Funeral services were held Feb 7, at Scott-Bolen Funeral Home in Chrisman; Officiating: Pastor Troy Warner; Burial: Fairview Cemetery in Kansas, Ill., with full military graveside rites conducted by Chrisman American Legion Post #477; Memorials: Chrisman Library in his memory. "Guinea" Vest, 86, of Metcalf, passed away at 6:40 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, at Paris Community Hospital. He was born Feb. 26, 1921, in Chrisman, to the Late Otis and Myrtle (Vice) Vest. He married Vera Carver on Jan. 1, 1946. She preceded him in death on Dec. 4, 2002. He is survived by his five children, Nancy (Butch) Carnaghi of Danville, Stan (Dolly) Vest of Turney, Mo., Lila (John) Sullivan of Shelbyville, Sherie (Henry) Lutz of Metcalf and Tim Vest of Metcalf; two sisters, Dorothy Fletcher of Modesto, Ill., and Lucille Vest of Chrisman; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Raymond Vest. Mr. Vest was a lifelong resident of Edgar County and served his country as a corporal in the United States Army during WW II. He was a retired truck driver. He was a member of the Chrisman American Legion Post 477 and the Paris VFW Post 3601. He was an avid Cubs fan and loved reading the Paris Beacon-News. Services celebrating his life will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11 at Krabel Funeral Home in Chrisman with visitation to be one hour prior to the service. Interment with military rites will follow at Woodland Cemetery in Chrisman. For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Chrisman American Legion Post 477.

Robert "Rod" Wyatt, age 87 of Chrisman, passed away at his home at 11:54 p.m. on July 24, 2010. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 27, from 5-7 p.m. at Krabel Funeral Home in Chrisman. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 28 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with burial to follow at Woodland Cemetery in Chrisman with military rites. He was born August 26, 1922 in rural Chrisman to the late Fred and Hermine (Robison) Wyatt. He married Bonita (Richards) Wyatt on February 14, 1948 in Chrisman. He is survived by Bonita, one son, Jack (Judy) Wyatt, one grandson, Jacob and one granddaughter, Joanna, all of Chrisman; one cousin and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Rod was a WWII veteran, having served his country as a fighter pilot in the South Pacific and was a lifetime member of the American Legion. He made many friends in the Chrisman community working as a rural mail carrier until retirement in 1976. He served a number of years on the Chrisman School Board and on the Woodland Cemetery Board. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Chrisman.

MISHAWAKA - Harry ``Bud'' Yates, 72, of 2124 E. Jefferson Road, died at 5:35 p.m. Monday in his home after an illness. Mr. Yates retired from Woodruff & Sons, Michigan City. He was born Jan. 3, 1922, in Chrisman, Ill., and lived in Mishawaka since 1948, coming from Metcalf, Ill. On June 6, 1939, in Paris, Ill., he married Erna ``Jerry'' Wynn. She survives, with a daughter, Setta Kay Baney of Bradenton, Fla.; a son, Richard E. of Mishawaka; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Wallace of Arkansas; and two brothers, Dennis L. Wallace of Valparaiso and Jim Yates of Casey, Ill. He was a veteran of World War II and member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 360 and the First Church of Nazarene, Chrisman.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Chapel Hill Funeral Home, Osceola. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Visiting Nurses Association

IN WWII served with the 20th, 58th and 19th Naval Construction Battalions; he was a MM 3rd Class Navy Petty Officer: 20th Naval Construction Battalion from September 1942 to 1944: This deployment of the new unit took them from San Pedro CA to Noumea, New Caledonia, then on to Townsville Australia. From there they were part of the invasion of the Kiriwina and Woodlark Islands where they built the airdrome and 30 miles of roads. Segments of the unit were sent to the Russell Islands. The 58th Naval Construction Battalion was brought to life 26 December 1942, during World War II, at Camp Allen in Norfolk, Virginia. They first deployed to Guadalcanal, and the 58th was the first Construction Battalion to land with the Marines in the initial assault on Vella LaVella, Northern Solomons. Later they deployed to Banika, Los Negros and Okinawa where, in addition to numerous construction projects, they kept the Yontan Air-field open during 261 enemy raids, which allowed Major "Pappy" Boyington and his F4U Corsairs of the famed VMF 214 Black Sheep Squadron to bring the war to the Japanese. With the end of World War II in sight, the 58th redeployed home and was eventually de-commissioned in May 1946 after four years of continuous outstanding service.
