He bought a 72 acre farm near Ridge Farm, and in 1884 he bought a second farm of 120 acres in Carrol Township, providing him with two medium sized farms.

Barnett drove the 6 horse wagon team, and while making a short turn, the money box spilled its contents into a little creek. All the money was found. Henry left Tennessee to get away from slavery. He sold settlers hundreds of acres of land to encourage settlement.

In 1979 he purchased 160 acres in Young America Township, improved the property, then sold it, repeating the procedure, even selling a hardware store in Chrisman "on account of too much business." He served as administrator of his father's 13,000 acre estate. The property was divided in the spring of 1889, and described as "joint property with his 4 sisters." His specialty was livestock. In 1886, he entered the mercantile business in Indianola with his brother, William H. Carter. They also purchased wool, produce, groceries and pottery of the Queensware line. Thomas became ill and was discharged in 1862. He studied medicine, especially diseases of the eye and worked as a traveling oculist for 5 years. He then turned to farming on 282 acres.

School was for 2 and a half months but later he went to a "rate" school. He read by drip candle and fireplace, and wore buckskin breeches and morocco hats. He plowed fields at age 11. His studies qualified him to teach for 21 months in Indiana, then on to Kentucky. Later, he taught the first school ever in Indiana, holding certificate #1, examined by Joshua Stevens and Samuel Merrill (the first president of State Bank of Indiana). Miles De Courey was the second examiner. John was active in politics in Indiana. John came to Vermilion County in 1874 and lived on a farm. In 1882 he became the first stock merchandiser in Sidell, first postmaster of Sidell, and the first grain buyer.

Condon, John. Bio 1017, 1018. b.1845 in Ireland. s/o Mathew Condon and Alice (Anghum) Codon, both from Ireland. From 1859 at age 14, John had worked for himself. He came to America at age 16 in 1861 on the "State of Louisiana" steamer, arriving in New York City after 19 days of storms at sea. He worked two years on the New York and Harlem Railroad. In 1868 he moved to Paris, Illinois, by rail and became a partner with his uncle, Edward Sheehey, farming 80 acres in Buck Township. Two years later, he rented 120 acres for two years and bought 100 acres in Shiloh Township. The next year he moved to the 220 acre Hedge Farm in Shiloh Township. In 1865 he moved to the last 610 acre farm. In addition to grain, he raised stock, and bought and shipped cattle. He had a special interest in horses, owning 30, requiring 8 to 10 teams on the property After summer was over, he operated a steam thresher. John never married. His brothers Patrick and Richard, and sister Catherine lived with him, and all were single. Note: John was on his own at age 14, which was after his mother died. No mention is made of a stepmother, but that is a possibility.

Cook, Amos G. Portrait 926. Bio 927, 928. b.1859. s/o Isaac Cook and Susannah (Shannon) Cook. Amos lived with his parents until 1877 when he reached the age of 18 years. He pursued studies at Eastham College in Richmond Indiana, then rented land, and was able to purchase 210 acres in 1888. Amos and a brother operated a larger extent of land than a person alone. They also pursued stock raising, especially cattle and Clydesdales, and did thrashing with a J. I. Case Separator machine. (Note: The J. I. Case Separator machines went into production after Mr Case completed his first improved thrashing machine in 1843-1844.) Amos and his brother operated a 300 acre farm using 16 horses and mules. After his father died in 1882, Amos's mother made her home with him.

Note: This confusing entry is in the biography, "John Cooper, the father of Thomas, emigrated from Ohio to Vigo County, Indiana, where he was one of its earliest pioneers...In 1861 he came to Edgar County, IL." In 1805, Samuel moved his family to Ohio on pack horses, with Robert, Isaac and Samuel in baskets loaded on a horse.

The first four children were born in Ohio, the rest in Illinois. Samuel made a keel boat to move from Ohio to Indiana, via the Ohio, up the Wabash to Perrysville, Indiana, taking household goods plus a large load of valuable salt. The rest of the trip was by hired wagon. A temporary dwelling was made of poles leaning on trees until a log house was made. Late in life, Samuel lived with son William in the winter, and daughter Elizabeth in the summer.

Wolves howled around cabin doors at night, and protection from prairie fires was achieved by plowing around the dwellings. Education (reading writing, ciphering) was only for a few months each year. Henry taught in the winter for 2 or 3 years. He became a flatboat man and made 18 trips to and from New Orleans. He met his wife at Vincennes, Indiana, married, and lived in Vincennes 8 years, also working as a carpenter. They moved to Danville where he farmed. Henry's army career was shortened to 8 months from overheating during training with Co. G 125th Illinois Infantry. The family moved to Knox Co. Indiana in 1863, then to Clay Co., Illinois, then on to Vermilion County in 1882. Henry opened a mercantile business in Westville, but an 1883 fire destroyed everything. Henry rebuilt and resumed business. He served as Postmaster for 3 years.

At age 6 or 7, William moved from Kentucky to Franklin County, Indiana, but in a few years he returned to Kentucky and lived with his grandfather, Phillip Weaver. On his own, he secured a practical education, as opposed to a classical education. He moved to Illinois in 1836, then in 1847 to Sims Township. His first home was a log cabin with a double wall. There were many prairie wolves. His holdings grew from 160 acres to 662 acres. He raised the first short horn cattle, imported Norman horses and first southdown sheep. William was the third cousin of Charles Culbertson, a famous stock raiser of Newman, Illinois. William's 1889 home was elaborate. 579, 580 lists the Culbertsons as "Cuthbertson," the Ranneys as "Raney."

In 1858, at age 16, William left home for a 2-1/2 year apprenticeship in harness and saddlery making, but instead, he clerked for 3 years in Danville. He joined Co K of the 37th Illinois Infantry under Captain J. C. Black, later General Black. William was disabled. For many years he did various jobs for several railroad companies. He returned to farming in 1886 as supervisor at his father's homestead in Newell Township, farmed on shares.

From childhood, Benjamin worked in his father's nursery, the first in Illinois, learning how to graft trees as a boy. As a youth, he joined in wolf hunts. His education was mostly at home, with school a few weeks in winter, and he attended a night school. At age 22, he started a nursery in Parish Township, operated 10 years with brother David S. Joseph served in the Revolutionary Army as a special dispatch carrier for General Washington. Joseph came to Illinois at age 85 to live with his son, Rev. Joseph Curtis, Jr.

Joseph lived in Ohio until 1818. He took his family by keel boat to Terre Haute, Indiana, loaded with 300 bushels of dried fruit, which he sold for $3 per bushel. He settled in what became Stratton County Indiana. He purchased his 320 acres for $1.25 per acre. He was the 6th man in Edgar County, established the first nursery in Illinois, the first person to do root grafting, and had the first steel plow in Illinois. He organized the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Hunter Township.
