After his marriage, he rented a farm until he was able to purchase 120 acres, the farm later occupied by Owen McKnight. See Bio for a record of Samuel's travels and purchases. In 1889 he farmed 160 acres, with an additional 15 acres of timber. He had 40 fine registered draft horses, and short-horned domestic cattle.

A stage brought mail to their cabin and Samuel acted as postmaster. Jane weighed over 200 pounds. In December, 1862, Samuel received a telegram, "Come Jessee dead. William sick - typhoid fever." Jessee was William's cousin.

In 1852, age 21, John purchased 150 acres near Mulberry Grove, Indiana. He moved from Indiana to Illinois in 1854 with only an overland team, arriving in Shiloh Township, then known as Buck. He worked as a farm laborer, then rented land. He finally purchased 80 acres. He enjoyed wolf hunts, corn huskings, apple parings. Apparently Mary was only 16 when she married 26-year-old John in 1856. From February 1865 to February 1866, he served with Company C, 150th Illinois Infantry. Although it was mainly guard duty, he suffered many hardships and exposure, contracting rheumatism to the point that he could no longer do labor. Note: No additional information was included regarding the 150 acres near Mulberry Grove that he had owned since 1851. The name came from an emigrant who camped under a large mulberry tree, yet there were few mulberry trees at Mulberry Grove. Mary's father, Archie Myers, spent his last days in the home of Mary and John.

Schooling was primitive. Henry left school at 19 to work on his father's farm. He bought 126 acres and 514 acres in Champaign County and a half section in Minnesota. Henry maintained a house with 4 lots in Champaign to better educate his family. In 1852 he sold a lot of mules and bought 982 acres, bringing his total land holdings to nearly 2,000 acres. Henry donated $1,000 to erect the Baptist University in Chicago, the site given by Stephen A. Douglas.

In 1872, the brothers built Ridge Farm Flouring Mill and sold it 6 months later. In 1886 he purchased a furniture story in Ridge Farm, and his wife apparently worked with him. He was also an undertaker. Note: Jonah was 51 when he married Ella in 1875.

Sanford became a partner on January 1, 1877, and moved the store to Muncie. The firm dissolved exactly 9 years later when Sanford purchased the business. Beginning when he was 16, Sanford worked in selling grain; he became the leading grain merchant in Muncie, moving thousands of dollars of grain. A tenant operated a 160 acre farm of which Sanford owned 120 acres. He became interested in the Davis Sewing Machine Company, and had 2 wagons and 2 men on the road all the time. He was postmaster, then assistant postmaster. Supervisor of Oakwood township. School Director.

Another neighbor, Laban Dillon, dressed as an Indian for fun, took a gun, crawled along in Indian fashion till Mardick saw him, then Dillon stood up as if to fire a gun. Mardick ran home leaving the horse and plow in the field. Mardick offered a man a colt if he would bring the horse to the house. Mardick became a laughing stock.

In 1859, John and brother William returned to Illinois to take care of their father's land that had not been sold, 2 miles southwest of Paris, Illinois. John farmed there till 1864 when he joined Co. E 66th Illinois Infantry, serving for 3 years. John died at home due to exposure and from a cold caught in the trenches of Ft. Donaldson. He died 3 days after the death of his mother. Note: If John died 3 years after his 1864 enlistment, he would have died in 1867. Apparently he enlisted in 1862 rather than 1864. Another possible error concerns his son, John W. Doak, who was born in 1866, a year after the marriage of his parents in 1865.

George spent time with his cousin, William P. Dole, a leading merchant in Napoleon, Ohio. When George was 18 in 1852, he moved to Paris, Illinois, beginning by cutting wood at 50 cents per cord. Self-educated, he qualified to teach school, saved his money and entered the academy at Paris. He continued saving until he had enough money to attend Washington & Jefferson College in Washington County, Pennsylvania, graduating with high honors in 1861 at age 27. The same day he graduated, he was summoned by his Cousin William Dole who had been appointed by Lincoln as Commissioner of Indian Affairs. William appointed George as adjutant of the 3rd Indian Regiment of U. S. Troops recruited from Kansas and Indian Territory. He was promoted to Lt. Colonel in 1863. See for battles. He used a furlough of 20 days to marry Anna. Back on duty, George slept outside for two years. He was mustered out at Ft. Gibson, Indian Territory in 1865. He was the law partner of H V. Sellar for 22 years. In 1888, he served as pall bearer for H A. Conkey. After the funeral, he had a stroke and died the next day. 948, 949. After he left Carson's Company, he earned $25,000 in a lead mine which set him on his way. See story. He returned to Illinois, married Lydia, who lived only 8 years. His second wife, Sarah, was born in England and was 14 when she came to America, about the time Samuel was exploring with Kit Carson. Note: Large parties of men decided during the Civil War years to go into distant parts of the country. Samuel joined the above party of 18 men in 1864.

(Dougherty). Died young: Willie, Freddie, Samuel E., Eddie. Benjamin was born in his father's log house. During the war, with his older brothers away in battle, 14 year old Benjamin worked the farm. He attended school only for three months for 6 years. Bright and talented, he read all the books he could find on the Civil War, and took up book keeping. He worked for 23 years on his father's homestead, till the deaths of his parents. After overheating in the summer of 1879, in 1880 Benjamin was so ill that he had to be carried out of the house on a feather bed while his personal property was sold. He recovered sufficiently to purchase the property of a hardware store and had so much success that he later bought the site. He served as Director of Fairmount Building and Loan Association.

A stage brought mail to their cabin and Samuel acted as postmaster. See for series of properties purchased, developed and sold. In December, 1862, Samuel received a telegram, "Come Jessee dead. William sick - typhoid fever." Jessee was William's cousin. In 1867, an accident crushed Samuel's foot. Tending to his cousin, the tragic death of his son, and his foot injury shattered Samuel's health.

In 1860, age 22, he began working for William Stevens in Vermilion County. The next year he was employed by. H. H. Hall, a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Indiana. Charles continued working for Rev. Hall for 7 years, interrupted in 1862 when Charles joined Co. D, 7th Indiana Infantry. See for extensive battles during which he was never injured, but was out for 4 days because of mumps. Read also the comment of the death of Thomas Guess who was killed at the Battle of Kenesaw Mt. Charles was discharged in June 1865 and 3 days later was back to work for Mr. Hall. In 1868, Charles re-entered the employ of William Stevens who had adopted the orphaned daughter of Thomas Guess, Charles' future wife. (Note: her given name was not included.) Charles owned 108 acres.
