He took a stage 300 miles to Bozeman, Montana, and was in Yellowstone in 1883. Returning to Vermilion County he began farming on his 70 acre farm and a second farm of 160 acres.

He bought 80 acres and moved to Vermilion County in 1863, increasing his land holdings to 160 acres. Some of the land on the eastern side needed drainage installed, which Robert accomplished, enabling cultivation of the land.

A farmer, at age 120, Rowland built a stack of oats. He walked 1-1/2 miles to church each week. He was ill only 1 week before his death.

In 1872, Silas moved to Paris, Illinois; in 1880 he moved to his final home in Paris, Illinois. See his many unusual efforts for the community. He built Elliott Chapel in 1856 for $15,000 in honor of his father, Arthur Elliott, a pioneer preacher. Two sons were wounded and son Theodore died in the Civil War. Silas worked for war victims, especially in Tennessee.

Thomas left Scotland until 1854 and came to the United States at age 32. He had no money but was willing to work, first in a stone quarry in New Jersey; next, he was in charge of a livery stable in Terre Haute, Indiana; then he went to Chicago to train race horses. He moved to Evanston, a suburb of Chicago, where he met Annie and they were married. He soon came to Edgar County and rented a farm in Kansas Township. Five years later he rented a farm in Douglas County. Then he bought a farm in Piatt County, became ill, couldn't pay, and became a renter for 4 years. His next move was to Young America Township.

Third husband of Edwilda A.(Cromwell) Fithian Sconce Evans. f/o Lloyd Cromwell Evans, died at age 8; Ruth Edwilda (Evans), died in infancy; Waldo Carl Evans. David didn't attend school until he was 10, then only for 2 months each year in the winter. He worked on his father's farm until age 23. At 24, he began study at Eclectic Institute at Hiram, Ohio, attending two terms which he payed for himself. A fellow student was President Garfield. David taught several places, see bio. In 1860 he entered the Law Department of the University of Michigan and graduated with the class of 1863. David enlisted in the army but caught typhoid and received a medical discharge. From 1865 to 1866 he was the editor of Danville's Plaindealer. He began his law practice in 1866 and in 1882 was elected as a Judge of the County Court of Vermilion County. He was a delegate to the National Republican convention.
