He purchased a ditching machine, and earned from $1,000 to $1,200 per year for several years. In 1863 he settled on his 70 acre farm that he later increased to 210 acres, plus 9 acres of timber.

Allen left New York and headed for Illinois, a month long trip, on foot, except for 14 miles. Intent on getting land, Allen bought 97 acres, stayed 6 months, and returned to New York. He returned after 3 years with his wife, this time traveling in a prairie schooner. Four or five years later, he rented a hotel, the first of its kind in the region, serving as "mine host" for three or four years. The land was so new to settlers that he saw as many as 300 deer in one day, and all kinds of berries were plentiful in the summer. He served as postmaster of Rio for 4 or 5 years for $5 or $6 per year.

In 1864 he came overland to Edgar County with a team and $700. He bought 240 acres in Ross Township, sold it in two years and bought 80 acres, part of his present property of 320 acres. He raised short horn cattle, 24 Norman draft horses, and swine. Cyrus identified with the temperance movement.

Jesse prospered to the extent that each son and two daughters were given 40 acres each and other property, yet he still had 100 acres. He retired in Muncie. Jesse knew Lincoln personally. Jesse was crippled by a series of accidents. Note: Jesse's son, Wilson Ligget, married Amanda (Dysert) Ligget. The connection to Jessee's second wife, Susan (Dysert) Ligget, is unknown.

Morris was 6 years old when he arrived in Illinois, traveling overland with teams. At age 21 he entered high school at Chrisman and graduated. He taught two winters, then turned to farming on land which he first rented from his father. In the winter of 1874-1875, he conducted a general store in Edgar with a stock worth $2,000. (1097, 1098). In 1878, he bought the store from brother-in-law Benjamin F. Manning, husband of sister Sarah E. (Little) Manning.) In the spring of 1884, he located on 80 acres of his father's land, which were deeded to him, plus 80 acres that he purchased. He concentrated mainly on stock raising. A supervisor of Edgar Township, and other public offices.
