When 13-year-old William arrived in Kansas Township, the roads were scarcely marked to the only markets at Terre Haute, Chicago, and St Louis. Timbers were placed across sloughs. At times, travelers had to go out of their way to avoid being swamped. At age 41, William joined Company H, 59th Illinois Infantry in 1861, and was discharged in 1865. He operated a 290 acre farm and also a 210 acre farm. William retired, kept 75 acres, and divided the remaining acres among his children.

Charles was the oldest resident of Prairie Township, having arrived in 1827 at age 5. The trip by wagon from Kentucky took 14 days. Wild life was abundant and Charles became a great hunter. The schools and hardships were typical of pioneer days. At age 27, Charles began raising cattle and drove them to Chicago, then a small town in 1849 of 1,000. It took 15 days to make the trip. When his father died in 1866, Charles, then 44, was able to buy the old 200 acre homestead in Scottland, Illinois. His interests were varied, ranging from mercantile business with son Warren, mining, and raising Durham cattle, Clydesdale and Norman horses, which he sold in Chicago and Indianapolis. See for records. He helped build the Harrison and Morton Ball, which according to the biography was rolled from Edgar County to Washington. Well educated by age 14, Henry learned the tailor's trade, and then began exploring. He visited all English towns over 10,000 population; next, he went to Greenock, Scotland; he established a tailor shop in London for 3 years; stayed in Paris for 6 weeks, and returned home to marry his childhood sweetheart in 1851. In 1854 Henry and his family left Liverpool and almost 2 months later arrived in New Orleans. In 1855, under the influence of Samuel Grondyck of Indiana, he went to Indiana for 6 months, then on to Vermilion County where he soon had a large trade. He became a naturalized U. S. citizen in 1873, and opened a sawmill with Mr. Knipe. He sold his interest then took a half interest in a sawmill with Abraham Sandusky. In 1881, he became partner with John W. Baum in a tile manufacturing plant. Due to his education, knowledge of U. S. and English history, and pleasant manner, sometimes he officiated as an attorney. Henry returned to England to visit the 1883 World's Fair and the Crystal Palace in London.

He served in Company G, 28th Illinois Infantry until he became ill, recovered, then assigned to duty as nurse. A prohibitionist; he contributed to the building of his church.
