(Wife #2) Margaret (Hickman) Oakes. m/o Willie Oakes. At age 17, Daniel became a member of Co. F, 71st Illinois Infantry for 3 months, then joined Co. F, 26th Illinois Infantry for 3 years. In 1864, he suffered a gunshot wound on his right side, kept on fighting, and never lost a day. In Savannah, his right knee was wounded. The hardships and exposure of war permanently affected his health. In 1869, he acquired a 110 acre farm.

Michael Oakwood, 266, 267, 268.: b.1791 d.1856/65, of German ancestry. h/o Margaret (Remley) Oakwood. b. 1789 d. 1878/89. f/o 6 sons and 3 daughters, Rev. Michael Oakwood only son to survive. Henry fought in the Battle of Tecumseh in the war of 1812. He had a good relationship with neighboring Indians. A pioneer, he held church services in his home. From the Bio of son Henry Oakwood. 420, 421, 422. b.1788. d.1854/66. h/o Margaret (Remley) Oakwood b.1794. d.1881/87. f/o 5 sons, 4 daughters, only 4 living, Henry the 3rd born. A Tennessee farmer, Henry fought in the War of 1812 with Hull's army, serving in the Kentucky Mounted Troops under Col. R. M. Johnson. Arrived in Illinois in the fall of 1833. Indians encamped for a year after the family arrived. Henry was Justice of the Peace for 12 years, Township Treasurer for 12 years. From the Bio of son the Honorable Jacob H. Oakwood 637, 638, 639. Henry's father (g/n/u) was the father of 1 son and 3 daughters; he owned 400 acres in Virginia. The maiden name of Henry's mother is still unknown. However, after Henry's father died, she married Peter Hickman. One of her daughters married Jacob Hickman, and a second daughter married Peter Hickman. Relationship of the husbands of the two daughters to their stepfather, Peter Hickman, is not included. The third Oakwood daughter married a Mr. McCracken. Henry attended school only 6 weeks. Oakwood Township was named after Henry.

Oakwood, Henry, Jr. Bio 420, 421, 422. b.1819. s/o Henry Oakwood, Sr. Husband of two women: (Wife #1) Abigail (Smith) Oakwood. m/o James Oakwood who drowned at the age of 4 years. (Wife #2) Priscilla (Sailor) Oakwood. m/o William Oakwood; Morgan Oakwood; Emma (Oakwood) Smith; Thomas Oakwood; Mattie (Oakwood); Harvey Oakwood; Stella (Oakwood). Henry was 14 when he came with his family to Vermilion County. He was educated in the old log school house which was on land that he later owned. Henry taught school for three years. He owned 750 acres in Oakwood Township, which was named in his honor. To the east of his property was the largest coal field in the state, Consolidated Coal of St. Louis. Henry raised stock, usually 30 cattle, 40 horses, 100 swine. He was School Director for 2 years, Road Overseer, Commissioner of Highways, and County Board of Supervisors.

Oakwood, Honorable Jacob H. Bio 637, 638, 639. b.1828. s/o Henry Oakwood and Margaret (Remley) Oakwood. Husband of two women: (Wife #1) Isabella (Caraway) Oakwood. m/o Mary E. (Oakwood), died age 14; Charles H. Oakwood; George W. Oakwood; Emma J. (Oakwood) Jeffres; Anna (Oakwood); Franklin Oakwood and two other children died as infants. (Wife #2) Rosanna (Coleman) Alexander Oakwood. Jacob was 5 years old when he came with his family to Vermilion County. In 1857 he opened a mercantile business which he operated in 1857, 1858, 1862, and 1863 in Catlin Village. He was interested in his 132 acre farm. He was part of the General Assembly of Illinois in 1872, and also 1876. He was Township Clerk, Justice of the Peace, Secretary of the Agricultural Society of Vermilion County and served as its President for 20 years.

In February, 1865, two important things happened in the life of John and Ann: They were married, and John escaped during a raid by General Stoneman. Settling in Tennessee after the war, John sent for Ann and they lived in Rheatown, Tennessee, until 1870 when they came to Ridge Farm, IL. He owned his shop and residence.

In 1831, Reason sold all of his property in preparation for a move from Ohio to Illinois. However, he died before he could even begin the move. Two weeks later Martha and the 6 children moved, making the journey with teams, driving stock before them. Mary bought 80 acres of forest covered land near Danville's courthouse. The family wintered in a log cabin. That winter Martha died. Relatives took in the children. He felled trees on the property to make his log house. He made an annual trip to Chicago to sell grain and wheat in order to buy household supplies. In 1840 he became Coroner. He was well acquainted with Lincoln.

A member of the Baptist Church at age 53, he organized the Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Edgar County in 1858 and served as minister with a beginning membership of 9. His final move was to Sidell, Vermilion County, Illinois. Note: James' immediate family has an unusually extensive connection to the Ross family. Louise, deceased daughter by first wife Margaret (Fortney), married William H. Ross. The second wife of James was Mary A. (Ross); their son, Franklin, married Lettie (Ross). The first child of James and Mary, Abner Ross Orr, bore the names of both grandfathers.
