The hardships and exposure of war permanently affected his health. In 1869, he acquired a 110 acre farm.

Henry's father (g/n/u) was the father of 1 son and 3 daughters; he owned 400 acres in Virginia. The maiden name of Henry's mother is still unknown. However, after Henry's father died, she married Peter Hickman. One of her daughters married Jacob Hickman, and a second daughter married Peter Hickman. Relationship of the husbands of the two daughters to their stepfather, Peter Hickman, is not included. The third Oakwood daughter married a Mr. McCracken. Henry attended school only 6 weeks. Oakwood Township was named after Henry.

Henry raised stock, usually 30 cattle, 40 horses, 100 swine. He was School Director for 2 years, Road Overseer, Commissioner of Highways, and County Board of Supervisors.

He felled trees on the property to make his log house. He made an annual trip to Chicago to sell grain and wheat in order to buy household supplies. In 1840 he became Coroner. He was well acquainted with Lincoln.

A member of the Baptist Church at age 53, he organized the Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Edgar County in 1858 and served as minister with a beginning membership of 9. His final move was to Sidell, Vermilion County, Illinois. Note: James' immediate family has an unusually extensive connection to the Ross family. Louise, deceased daughter by first wife Margaret (Fortney), married William H. Ross. The second wife of James was Mary A. (Ross); their son, Franklin, married Lettie (Ross). The first child of James and Mary, Abner Ross Orr, bore the names of both grandfathers.
