He was one of the first settlers to build a tile drain on his entire 160 acres; a huge ditch in a corner drained the property Market trips were hard, 45 to 50 miles one way, leaving at 2 a.m. to arrive at market with broom corn by sundown. He sold the first broom corn in Hoopeston.

Partlow); Augustus Partlow; Fannie Mable (Partlow, died at 4 years; Minnie Ellen, died at 10 months. Asa's early schooling was in a log cabin, with a log removed when light was needed. When old enough, he left school and was compelled to help his father on the farm. At 17 he attended a seminary in Georgetown. Two years later, from 1852 to 1873, he was in a partnership with S. A. Humphrey and J. M. Partlow, under the firm name of Humphrey & Co., general mercantile business. Note, Asa's mother was Elizabeth H. (Humphrey) Partlow. In 1873, he entered the insurance business.

At age 14, John worked in a drug store, then went back to school. He became an employee of Partlow & Humphrey, then John became a partner with R. A. Short, eventually owning the mercantile store. Employed by Chicago & Eastern IL Railroad Co, and finally a Railway Mail Clerk for 11 years.

Partlow, Reuben. 351, 352 b. 1804. d.1866/62. s/o Samuel Partlow and unidentified wife. h/o Elizabeth H. (Humphrey) Partlow. f/o Asa Partlow; Almira (Partlow) Davidson; John Partlow; David Partlow; Sarah A. (Partlow) Draper; Elizabeth (Partlow) Morris. He and Elizabeth went to Illinois in 1831, on horseback. Reuben was a wheel wright and cooper in Danville. In 1834 they acquired some land, and built a log house with a wood fireplace used for cooking. Elizabeth spun the fabric for their clothes. They moved to another homestead in Middle Fork. See, for honey story.

Partlow, Samuel. 351, 352, 280, 281. d. 1835. Wife not identified. f/o 9 children with 7 in Illinois: 3 daughters (unnamed), and 4 sons: John Partlow; James Partlow, 280, 281; Reuben Partlow; Samuel Partlow. Samuel and his wife came to Illinois in 1835 to spend the winter with their children, but both died. The sons were unable to cut timber in the winter for coffins, until later.

Patrick. Thomas was 16 when his family arrived in Bruellet Township. Thomas moved to Jasper County and eventually owned 1,000 acres which he sold 1858 and moved to Mattoon, Illinois.

William graduated from high school in Mattoon, left home at age 18 in 1865, and was clerk in a dry goods store in Newton, for two years. He began buying and shipping livestock to Chicago. In 1868 he purchased 210 acres at $5 and $8 per acre. His land holdings grew to 320 acres. He shipped two carloads of cattle per year, plus swine.

(Patterson) Campbell; Elizabeth (Patterson) Campbell; Golden Patterson. Amelia died when son Golden was an infant. Andrew came to Vermilion County in 1827. Wild animals were everywhere, even wild hogs. Indians roamed about at will on Andrew's 500 acres of Government land. Andrew had to go to Indiana for milling until a horse powered mill was built.

See for encounter with Brigham Young, resulting in 600 mile uncharted trail and first wagon to go through Cahon Pass on wheels. Many died on the trail. Dug for gold till 1852. Joseph left North Carolina at age 14, and arrived in Kentucky in 1800, then went to Indiana until 1825, when he went to Edgar County and acquired the homestead later occupied by his son, James M. Perisho. Note: There are apparent errors on pages 778, 779, concerning the father of Joseph Perisho, such as his being kidnapped at age 3 years old by a fisherman and brought to North Carolina; this does not correspond with any stories available on 1003 or 1004, or on Google. Pages 778, 779 lists Barbara (Zink) Perisho as the mother of Joseph; however on 1003, 1004, she is well-documented as his wife. When William was a child, children worked on the farms in the summer, went to school in the winter. An early settler of Kansas Township in Edgar County, there were still desperadoes and Indians roaming the countryside. Wolf hunts were popular. The only public road ran through a farm later owned by William. A stage line ran from St Louis, Chicago, Terre Haute, and Louisville, Kentucky. Milling was done at Terre Haute, and they also took along most of their pork to sell. Corn sold for 6-1/4 cents per bushel, seed cost $1 per bushel. William later divided 210 acres among his children, with his home given to his unmarried son, Harrison, with whom he lived.

Granville was a spelling champ in 1848, out-spelling the large school at Ridge Farm. (Note: Since Granville was 24, he may have challenged the students as he was surely too old to be a student himself.) Granville later owned his father's 350 acre farm, where he raised graded Short-horn cattle and Poland-China swine. He was a School Director for 40 years, and a Justice of the Peace. John moved from Pennsylvania to Ohio in 1823, then moved to Vermilion County in 1830. In 1832 during the Black Hawk War, Isaac Mardick was a neighbor on the same section as the Pugh's land. Another neighbor, Laban Dillon dressed as an Indian for fun, took a gun, crawled along in Indian fashion till Mardick saw him, then Dillon stood up as if to fire a gun. Mardick ran home leaving the horse and plow in the field. Mardick offered a man a colt if he would bring the horse to the house. Mardick became a laughing stock.

Puzey; Henry Puzey. Henry was well educated in private schools and Episcopal schools in England. He was apprenticed to his Uncle Henry Puzey in the dry goods business. In 1850, Henry traveled to America, came to Vermilion County, and bought 40 acres. After 7 years he returned to England. Eighteen months later, in 1958, he returned to America with his bride whom he had married in 1857. "Through the intelligent use of his opportunities and enhanced by an endowment from his wife's estate, Mr. Puzey has prospered and become independent, financially speaking." Henry owned 340 acres plus a quarter section that was rented to tenants.
