When William was a child, children worked on the farms in the summer, went to school in the winter. An early settler of Kansas Township in Edgar County, there were still desperadoes and Indians roaming the countryside. Wolf hunts were popular. The only public road ran through a farm later owned by William. A stage line ran from St Louis, Chicago, Terre Haute, and Louisville, Kentucky. Milling was done at Terre Haute, and they also took along most of their pork to sell. Corn sold for 6-1/4 cents per bushel, seed cost $1 per bushel. William later divided 210 acres among his children, with his home given to his unmarried son, Harrison, with whom he lived.

Granville was a spelling champ in 1848, out-spelling the large school at Ridge Farm. (Note: Since Granville was 24, he may have challenged the students as he was surely too old to be a student himself.) Granville later owned his father's 350 acre farm, where he raised graded Short-horn cattle and Poland-China swine. He was a School Director for 40 years, and a Justice of the Peace. John moved from Pennsylvania to Ohio in 1823, then moved to Vermilion County in 1830. In 1832 during the Black Hawk War, Isaac Mardick was a neighbor on the same section as the Pugh's land. Another neighbor, Laban Dillon dressed as an Indian for fun, took a gun, crawled along in Indian fashion till Mardick saw him, then Dillon stood up as if to fire a gun. Mardick ran home leaving the horse and plow in the field. Mardick offered a man a colt if he would bring the horse to the house. Mardick became a laughing stock.

In 1850, Henry traveled to America, came to Vermilion County, and bought 40 acres. After 7 years he returned to England. Eighteen months later, in 1958, he returned to America with his bride whom he had married in 1857. "Through the intelligent use of his opportunities and enhanced by an endowment from his wife's estate, Mr. Puzey has prospered and become independent, financially speaking." Henry owned 340 acres plus a quarter section that was rented to tenants.
