In 1850, at 17, he apprenticed to a carriage-maker in Salem, Ohio, until age 21 in 1854. Married in 1855. In 1865 he left Ohio, came to Edgar County, and located at Vermilion Station as a wagon and carriage maker, carpenter, and undertaker. In 1872, off to Kansas in Edgar County. In 1888, with his son, Charles F. Vale, as manager of the Editorial Department , and James as the senior member, he established the Kansas Herald, in Edgar County.

Having learned the trade of tanner, Benjamin left New Jersey at age 17 in 1818, with his family. For a while he teamed to Chicago. In 1850, he was made a captain of a group of prospectors bound for California with cattle; the move to California took 6 months. He mined till 1851. He later farmed and raised stock on 200 acres. Benjamin served as Captain of a company of Illinois State Militia. In 1886 he suffered a paralytic stroke.

Van Houtin, William. 849, 850, 851. f/o Captain Benjamin Van Houtin and two sons who served in the Black Hawk War. William left New Jersey in 1818 and went first to Merrian, Indiana, then to Stratton Township in Edgar County. They were the 9th family to settle there. They farmed 160 acres.

He recalled the first stoves and matches in Edgar County. At age 20 in 1851, he began farming 80 acres in Stratton Township in the summers. In the winters he developed his voice, and taught 14 seasons using the Harrison System and then the Haydon System in Indiana counties of Vermilion, Vigo and Park Counties; in Illinois in Edgar, Colis, Jasper, Douglas, Moultrie, Macon, Christian and Clark Counties. Married in 1860, he farmed and raised livestock on a small scale.

Vanneman, Andrew. 646, 647, 648. Born "the beginning of the century." First husband of Ann (Miller) Vanneman Mapes. f/o Annie (Vanneman) Waddington; Margaret (Vanneman) Simpkins, deceased; William A. Vanneman. Well educated, Andrew taught and farmed. He died when William was an infant. Contradictory dates, all on 646: Andrew died "when his son William was but an infant." William was born March 11, 1826, yet "In 1839 he (Andrew) came to this state." "He died suddenly of heart disease, in the seventy-fourth year of his age."

(Vanneman) Brown; Franklin Vanneman; Albert Vanneman; Anne M. (Vanneman), died age 4; Howard Vanneman died at 18 months. (Wife #2) Emma C. (Patterson) Vanneman. William's first interest was medicine, but too costly. At 15, he apprenticed 5 years to a painter and grainer, then at 20, he worked as a journeyman. Painting injured his health. At 25, he came to Illinois with Joshua Waddington, the husband of sister Annie Vanneman Waddington, to engage in stock raising. 1853, William moved his family from New Jersey by rail to LaFayette Indiana, then overland by team. He farmed, painted, decorated, etc. He was able to give each child 80 acres.

After his marriage to Amanda, the young couple lived in a 16' square log cabin on the land given to him by his father. He eventually owned 186 acres. Note: Daughters Ruth and Mary Frances married young men named "Elder." The spouses of son William and daughter Ella are named "Shaffer."

In 1806, James moved his family from Pennsylvania to Ohio on a flat-bed boat. His farm became large. He built a double hewed log house with a chimney in the center, a fireplace on each end.

He was a Life Member of the American Bible Society, and bequeathed $6,000 to the society.

Levin and Naomi adopted two boys: Edwin Vinson, and an unnamed 7 year old boy from a New York juvenile asylum, who was 17 in 1889 and doing well. Levin's schooling ended at 12. He purchased 320 acres on a soldiers land warrant that was a fraud, loosing 160 acres. He later owned 200 acres. With brother John Vinson, he raised a company of men as part of the 125th Illinois Infantry, serving as captain for two years; he became ill in the last 5 months of service. Mother Abigail lived with Levin the last 5 years of her life.
