In 1888, with his son, Charles F. Vale, as manager of the Editorial Department , and James as the senior member, he established the Kansas Herald, in Edgar County.

After his marriage to Amanda, the young couple lived in a 16' square log cabin on the land given to him by his father. He eventually owned 186 acres. Note: Daughters Ruth and Mary Frances married young men named "Elder." The spouses of son William and daughter Ella are named "Shaffer."

In 1806, James moved his family from Pennsylvania to Ohio on a flat-bed boat. His farm became large. He built a double hewed log house with a chimney in the center, a fireplace on each end.

He was a Life Member of the American Bible Society, and bequeathed $6,000 to the society.

Levin and Naomi adopted two boys: Edwin Vinson, and an unnamed 7 year old boy from a New York juvenile asylum, who was 17 in 1889 and doing well. Levin's schooling ended at 12. He purchased 320 acres on a soldiers land warrant that was a fraud, loosing 160 acres. He later owned 200 acres. With brother John Vinson, he raised a company of men as part of the 125th Illinois Infantry, serving as captain for two years; he became ill in the last 5 months of service. Mother Abigail lived with Levin the last 5 years of her life.
