James Forster Cavet

James Forster Cavet

James Forster Cavet/Cavitt born about 1775 in Pennsylvania and died about 1830 in Rush County, Indiana, married Rebecca J. Applegate. (Rebecca's surname is recorded in DAR files based on a Bible that was in the possession of Bessie Cavitt Avery. Bessie's daughter Elizabeth Sybil Avery said the Cavitt family Bible burned in a house fire.)

After the war of 1812, James moved his family along with other Scots-Irish families westward from southwestern Pennsylvania. They were recorded in the 1820 federal census for Brown County, Ohio where James was engaged in "commerce". By 1823, James had become one of the original landowners in Rush County, Indiana. The family lived on "Cavitt Hill", about one mile north of the courthouse, for several years. James owned 80 acres.

James was a surveyor or viewer and mapped Main Street Road from north of Rushville to Blue River in 1824.

James died about 1830 and was buried in an unmarked grave on his farm in Jackson Township. His son William C. Cavitt was appointed administrator of his estate on March 7, 1831.
