Descendants of Mary Osburn

Mary Oburn was born April 17, 1834 in Harrison County, (West) Virginia, and died December 24, 1919 in Memphis, Scotland County, Missouri. She married (1) William S. Hurst November 11, 1852 in Lewis County, Virginia, son of John Hurst and Winifred Smoot. He was born May 1829 in Lewis County, (West) Virginia, and died July 31, 1855 in Lewis County. She married (2) George Washington "Wash" Alexander October 4, 1857 in Lewis County, (West) Virginia, son of Vincent Alexander and Mary Winans. He was born October 11, 1835 in Lewis County, (West) Virginia, and died February 18, 1890 in Johnson Twp., Scotland County, Missouri.

Mary's grandchildren remembered that she smoked a corn cob pipe.

Mary and William Hurst had two daughters, Harriet and Florence, before William's untimely death.

Mary and second husband Wash Alexander moved to Missouri after the Civil War, to be near Wash's older brother Jesse Denny Alexander. Family members said that when Mary and Wash moved west, they left her daughters, Harriet and Florence, with their Hurst relatives. Mary's brother, Marsh Osburn, helped the family get settled in their new home, then returned to West Virginia to get the two girls and bring them to join the family in Missouri.

Wash and Mary had ten children, five of whom did not live to age 21.

After first settling in Clark County, Missouri, they buried five children in the Bethlehem Baptist Church cemetery north of Luray, Missouri. It is very possible, but unproven, that the children had consumption, today known as tuberculosis.

According to family tradition, when neighbors, the Lewis Spencer family, were murdered with an axe by an unknown assailant Aug. 3, 1877, Mary was the first woman to arrive at the grisly scene to grieve and help clean up.

By 1880, the family had moved to Scotland County, Missouri. Could the memory of that terrible day have prompted them to move?

Mary died at the home of her daughter, Harriet Hurst Sheets, in Scotland County, Missouri.
