Rosabel Watkins Sheets

Rosabel Watkins, daughter of John Watkins and Ann Evans, was the first child in the family to be born in the United States. She was born August 8, 1881 near Keosauqua, Van Buren County, Iowa; died April 24, 1957 in hospital at Keosauqua, Van Buren County, Iowa. Buried at Center Chapel Cemetery, Van Buren County.

She married Henry Edgar Sheets on September 23, 1903 in the home of her parents at Willits Station, Van Buren County, Iowa,

The family moved to Clark County, Missouri about 1916 (barely south of the state line dividing Iowa and Missouri) and later joined the Bethlehem Baptist Church in 1926. The children rode a horse named Jessie to school. The family returned to Mount Sterling, Iowa, in 1943.

Children of Henry Sheets and Rosabel Watkins are:

i. Leonard Leon Sheets, born August 29, 1904 in near Mount Sterling, Van Buren County, Iowa; died October 15, 1975 in Van Buren County, Iowa. Leonard never married. He farmed and worked in the coal and trucking business. He was also a member of the Mount Sterling town council. He lived with his mother in Mount Sterling, and remained in the four-room house after her death.

ii. Hazel Mae Sheets, born October 4, 1910 in Van Buren County, Iowa; died August 25, 1996 in Fort Madison, Lee County, Iowa. Buried at Center Chapel. She married Eugene Bryan "Gene" Alexander September 22, 1934 in Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa; born September 2, 1908 near Cantril, Van Buren County, Iowa; died February 24, 1981 in Keosauqua, Van Buren County, Iowa. Buried at Center Chapel, Van Buren County, Iowa. Children of Hazel Mae Sheets an Gene Alexander are: a. Edgar "Leon" Alexander born at home near Granger, Scotland County, Missouri. Donald Gene Alexander was born at home near Granger, Scotland County, Missouri. c. Connie Mae Alexander was born in hospital at Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa.

iii. Edgar Franklin Sheets, born October 17, 1914 in Van Buren County, Iowa; died October 10, 1959 in Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa. He married Helen Overhulser March 5, 1940, daughter of Claude Overhulser and Carrie Kirner. She was born October 8, 1920 in Granger, Missouri, and died January 7, 2001 in Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois. Edgar lived in St. Francisville, Missouri and worked in a foundry in Keokuk, Iowa. He was killed in an auto accident on his way home from work. Children of Edgar Sheets and Helen Overhulser are: a. Hazel "Roselee" Sheets, born in Macomb, Illinois; b. Wanda Mae Sheets; and c. Claude Edgar Sheets, born February 14, 1944 in Scotland County, Missouri; died March 1, 1944.
