Benjamin Crownover served in the Revolutionary War in South Carolina and received 200 acres of land for his service. Relationship=5th great-grandson of Wolphert Gerretse Van Kouwenhoven.
Benjamin Crownover was born on 14-Nov-1794 at District 96, Union County, South Carolina. He was the son of John Crawford Crownover and Mary Elizabeth Chesney. Benjamin married Nancy Robbins on 16-Apr-1818 at Pecan Point, Miller County, Arkansas. Benjamin Crownover died on 12-Dec-1864 at Long Creek, Dallas County, Texas, at age 70.

Benjamin Crownover was born 11/14/1794 in Union CO., SC. to John Crownover and Mary Elizabeth Chesney. The Crownovers migrated to Hopkins Co., Ky. by 1807. Sometime before his enlistment in the Illinois Militia, Benjamin and family moved to St. Clair Co., IL. He served as a Private, Mounted Volunteers, Illinois Militia, War of 1812. Nancy Robins and Benjamin Crownover were married on 04/16/1818 in Pecan Point, Miller Co., AR. By 1824 the Crownovers Family had moved into the State of Coahuila y Tejas, Mexico (Present day Red River Co. TX). Benjamin Crownover appears in the 1830 census for Hempstead Co., AR. On 08/01/1837 and again on 08/10/1837, Benjamin received land certificates in Hempstead Co., AR. Benjamin received a 2nd Class Land Certificate in Red River Co. on 10/04/1838. This would indicated that he arrived in Texas after 03/02/1836 and before 10/01/1837. Benjamin served in Capt W. B. Stout's Company of the Red River Rangers from 11/26/1838 to 02/26/1839. Benjamin's oldest daughter married Capt A. W. Webb on 05/03/1841 in Blossom Prairie, Red River Co., TX. Blossom Prairie is now Blossom, Lamar Co., TX. Benjamin and family followed his son-in-law, Capt Webb to Bird's Fort in 1841-1842. Bird's Fort is located near modern day Arlington, TX. Benjamin appeared on the revised roster of men who served at Bird's Fort. The Crownover's presence at Bird's Fort is substantiatred by James Beeman's memoirs. He stated that A. W. Webb was at Bird's Fort with his family. The only family that A. W. Webb had in Texas were his in-laws, gthe Crownover's. They would move to the new city of Dallas by 1842. The Webbs and Crownover's were the first two families to settle in what would become the Long Creek Community on Mercer Colony land about 1844. In 1849, "Benjamin Crownover of Dallas County" sold his land in Red River Co. to James J. Ward. Witnessed by A W Webb. James J. Ward was married to Lavenia Robbins. Benjamin and Nancy Crownover had 12 children. Benjamin died 12/12/1864 at his home in Long Creek Community, Dallas Co., TX. having out lived seven of his own children. One of his daughters, Leona Crownover Caldwell, was the firsgt laid to rest under a very old pecan tree which was located in the field of her father in 1854. This family burial site would become Long Creek Cemetery.

1. Benjamin was born in Union County, South Carolina on 14 Nov 1794. This information comes from his letters to his sisters and his tombstone. Nancy was born in Tennessee on 12 Oct 1798. This info comes from the 1850 and 1860 census and her tombstone.
2. The Crownovers migrated to Hopkins County, Kentucky by 1807 when Benjamin (father of John Crawford Crownover) is included on a tax list there.
3. Sometime before his enlistment in the Illinois Militia, Benjamin and family move to St. Clair County, Illinois. The Chesney’s moved with them.
4. In 1815 two significant events happen to Benjamin; he is released from active duty in the Illinois Militia and his grandfather, Benjamin Crownover, dies in St Clair County, Illinois.
5. Also, in the 1815 Tax list for Lawrence County, Missouri Territory (Northern Arkansas), John, Nathaniel and William Robins are listed. They are also listed in 1816.
6. In 1818 Benjamin’s other grandfather, Robert Chesney, dies. I have been told, but have not documented that Robert is buried near Columbia, Missouri.
7. Some of John Crawford’s siblings stay in St Clair County, Illinois, some stop in Missouri and one goes on to Louisiana, but John and his family go to Miller County Arkansas. (various sources)
8. Col George W Wright, the founder of Paris, Texas and a local historian, stated that John Crownover and Nathaniel Robins and families were living in Pecan Point, Miller County, Arkansas by 1817. He further states that one of Nathaniel Robins’ daughters was married to Benjamin Crowner/Cramer. The concerns regarding this info center around the fact that Col Wright’s history was written many years after the events took place and are the recollections of an old man. There are also concerns about the transcription of Col Wright’s handwriting. Assuming, however that Col Wright’s facts are accurate, it would seem that our Nancy Robins must be related to the Nathaniel Robins of Pecan Point. The point being that if Benjamin was in Pecan Point in 1817 and he married Nancy on 16 April 1818, she must have been in Pecan Point with her family. Nineteen-year-old women did not travel around the frontier by themselves. Personally, I believe Nancy is Nathaniel’s sister and not his daughter. Additionally, the Crownover’s presence in Pecan Point is supported by the fact that Mitchell Crownover was an officer in the Pecan Point Militia. The Major of the this unit was Nathaniel Robins.
9. Nancy Robins and Benjamin Crownover were married on 16 April 1818. I get this date from the Dan Crownover website. However, I believe the original information came from John Crawford Crownover’s Bible. I have not seen the Bible, but it was in the possession of Mrs. John Shirley of Uvalde, Texas in 1939.
10. Benjamin and Nancy had a child that died in infancy. Benjamin mentioned this in one of his letters to his sisters.
11. In 1825 Benjamin and his brother, Mitchell (if Mitchell is in Pecan Point Benjamin must be there also) sign a petition to the US Government concerning the settlers in Miller County, Arkansas. Also signing the petition are John Robins, Nathaniel Robbins, and Joshua Robbins.
12. Benjamin’s family moved deeper into Texas. Mary Crownover Rabb left Jonesboro on 1 Oct 1823. John Crawford, John Chesney, Arter, and Malissa Crownover followed later. John Chesney Crownover entered into a marriage bond with Nancy Castleman on 29 Apr 1824 in the Austin Colony.
13. The obit for Benjamin Beverly, stated that his mother, Rebecca Crownover, was the first Anglo child born in Red River County, Texas. (Dallas Morning News, 30 Jul 1939, Sec I, page 12). Rebecca Crownover was born 16 Apr 1824, and the census do indicate that she was born in Texas.
14. Benjamin Crownover appears in the 1830 census for Hempstead County, Arkansas. He has two sons under five; two daughters between five and ten; one daughter between ten and 15. Both he and his wife are between 30 and 40.
15. On 1 Aug 1837 and again on 10 Aug 1837, Benjamin received land certificates in Hempstead County, Arkansas.
16. Benjamin received a 2nd Class Land Certificate in Red River County on 4 Oct 1838. This would indicate that he arrived in Texas after 2 Mar 1836 and before 1 Oct 1837.
17. Benjamin served in Capt W B Stout’s Company of the Red River Rangers from 26 Nov 1838 to 26 Feb 1839.
18. Benjamin’s oldest daughter married Capt A W Webb on 3 May 1841 in Blossom Prairie, Red River County, Texas. Blossom Prairie is now Blossom, Lamar County, Texas.
19. Benjamin and family followed his son-in-law, Capt Webb, to Bird’s Fort in 1841-1842. Bird’s Fort is located near modern day Arlington, Texas. Benjamin appeared on the revised roster of men who served at Bird’s Fort. The Crownover’s presence at Bird’s Fort is substantiated by James Beeman’s memoirs. He stated that A W Webb was at Bird’s Fort with his family. The only family that A W Webb had in Texas were his in-laws, the Crownover’s.
20. In 1849, “Benjamin Crownover of Dallas County” sold his land in Red River County to James J Ward. Witnessed by A W Webb. James J Ward was married to Lavenia Robbins.
21. Benjamin and Nancy appeared in the1850 census for Dallas County
22. In an 1862 letter to his sister, Mary Crownover Rabb, Benjamin stated that John Robbins died. This date is consistent with the death of John Robbins of Red River County, brother to Nathaniel Robbins and, significant at least in my mind, well known to Mary Rabb.
23. On 7 Dec 1864 Benjamin executed his Will. Witnesses were C L Summers and Andrew McMeans. Andrew McMeans was the father of C A McMeans, husband of Lavinia Webb.
24. Benjamin died on 12 Dec 1864 in Dallas County, Texas. Nancy died on 30 Nov 1866 in Dallas County, Texas. Both are buried in the Long Creek Cemetery.
James Bellamy.

Mary Crownover
Mary Crownover was born on 8-Apr-1805 at Buncombe County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of John Crawford Crownover and Mary Elizabeth Chesney. Mary married John Rabb, son of William Rabb and Mary Smalley, on 2-Oct-1821 at Jonesborough, Miller County, Arkansas. Mary Crownover died on 13-Oct-1882 at Texas at age 77. Mary was buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Austin, Travis County, Texas.
She was also known as Polly Crownover. RABB, MARY CROWNOVER (1805-1882). Mary (Polly) Crownover Rabb, early Texas pioneer and supporter of Methodism, was born in Buncombe County, North Carolina, on April 8, 1805, the daughter of John and Mary (Chesney) Crownover. Her father, a hatter, took his family to Arkansas Territory in 1820. In 1821 Mary met and married John Rabb,qv with whom she eventually had nine children. In 1823 the young family left Arkansas to begin a new life in Stephen F. Austin'sqv colony in Texas.

"Now my childern and gran childern I am going to try to tell you something about the way your Pa and me had to do to get land for you." So begin the reminiscences Mary Rabb wrote of her early years in Texas, which were published as Travels and Adventures in Texas in the 1820s. She and John settled first on the Colorado River a few miles upstream from the site of the future La Grange, where John's father, William Rabb,qv had claimed a headright in Austin's colony. Harassed by Indians, they moved eastward to the Brazos River, where John claimed a league of land below the site of present-day Richmond. Swarms of mosquitoes, sand flies, and gnats made living there impossible, and soon they moved again. Over the course of their first half dozen years in Texas, the family moved several times, with their few household goods, including chickens, tied atop a packhorse. The Rabbs established several temporary homes along the Brazos and Colorado rivers. During warm weather they camped out, their shelter a tent made of quilts and a sheet. During winters they built a cabin or stayed with relatives who had one, though Mary recalled spending one winter in a shed that was open on three sides. One of their houses was washed away by a flood. Often Mary and her children were left alone. On such occasions she tended the stock, saw to child-rearing and household chores, and continued the never-ending task of spinning. Karankawa and Tonkawa Indians remained in the area. Mary kept her spinning wheel going to drown out their sounds, which frightened her. Another recurrent fear was that alligators from the Brazos would eat her children.

The Rabbs sometimes visited Mary's parents, who had moved to Texas, or John's parents, or friends. Whenever a Methodist preacher came through the country, Mary and John attended the camp meetings. In 1832 they returned to Rabbs Prairie above La Grange and began operating a mill. In 1836 they were forced to flee the Mexican army as it moved to quell the Texas Revolution.qv Their infant child Lorenzo died during the Runaway Scrape.qv After the revolution the Rabbs and their neighbors rebuilt their homes and farms. The Texans prospered, and John and Mary accumulated a substantial amount of land in Fayette County. Following Mary's lead, John became a Methodist, and the two of them helped to finance and organize Rutersville College, the first college in Texas and a precursor of Southwestern University. Their final move was to a site near Barton Springs, outside Austin. They lived there in a log cabin until John's death in 1861 or 1862 and built a sizable herd of cattle marked with their Bow and Arrow brand. During the Civil War,qv one of their sons, John Wesley Rabb, served as a sergeant in the Eighth Texas Cavalryqv (Terry's Texas Rangers), and another, Virgil Sullivan Rabb, was captain of Company I, George M. Flournoy'sqv regiment, Walker's Texas Division.qv In 1867 Mary hired workmen to build a two-story house of limestone near the old cabin. Safe at last from floods, alligators, and Indians, she continued to raise stock and to support the Methodist Churchqv until her death, on October 15, 1882. She was buried beside her husband in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin.

Rev. Arter Crownover
In 1854, Rev. Arter Crownover and his family were the first pioneers to settle in our area. They settled on 1476 acres (which they paid $1 an acre) of the Jilson Morton land grant on White's Creek. Rev. Arter was born on July 22, 1810 in Arkansas and married Levania (Levina) Castleman in 1829.

They built a large two story stone house that is still used today by the Crownovers. A special rock horse stall still exist that was constructed to prevent Indians from stealing their prize stallion. The horse stall worked... it prevented the Indians from stealing the horse but the frustrated Indians instead killed the horse. The Crownovers are still a big part of this area and we purchased our land from a descendant of Rev. Arter Crownover.

DIED
On the evening of Dec. 11th, 1879, Mrs. Nancy Fike, one of the oldest and well known inhabitants of this place, in the eighty-eighth year of her age.
She was born in South Carolina, May 22nd, 1792. Her journey of life extended over nearly three genrations, including a time when the few inhabitants of St. Louis were mostly Indians; when Cincinnati was but a village of log huts, Chicago a little trading post, the Mississippi valley a wilderness, and when Ohio was not yet admitted to the Union. With her parents for a short period she resided in Tennessee; but in 1810 emigrated to Illinois, and there remained until her removal to Warrensburg. Longevity was the common inheritance of her father’s house. Her brothers and sisters all lived to a good old age. In her own home she cared for her father in his last illness, who died in the 84th year of his age. Religion was no less prominent. For 65 years she had been a very prominent and faithful member of the M.E. Church. In the pioneer days of the early itinerants, her house was not only a home for the ministers, but the appointed place for preaching, the prayer meeting and the class meeting; and then the "hallowed spot" where many souls were happily converted to God. No doubt many of these ministers, classmates and converts have greeted this departed saint in the eternal home of the blessed. Three of her own children preceded her to rest. Five others are active members of the church on earth. Whenever they exemplify Christ in business or labor in the Sunday School, or lead others toward heaven, the life of this faithful mother yet speaks and her "works do follow her." To her the change was expected day by day. She usually prefaced all plans for the immediate future by saying, "If I am still here." All material preparations, minutely and generally, were in perfect readiness. Truly in the exalted sense her "house was set in order." Her desire often expressed, and no doubt her secret prayer, was that she might be spared from physical suffering in the final dissolution. She was not disappointed. On Saturday eveing she retired in her usual manner and when calmly and perfectly at rest, her hands and feet adjusted for the night, she said to a friend who was present "I feel so comfortable I think I will sleep well to-night." In a few moments she said "Blessed Jesus" and fell asleep. In a few minutes, without moving a hand, foot or finger, she ceased to breathe. She thus, without special illness or any suffering, and beautifully feel (sic) asleep in death. The peculiar manner of her death impressed all those who looked upon the peaceful features and as they thought of the years below and the life above, represented in this calm and peaceful sleep, no doubt said, "Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like her’s."
The funeral services were conducted in the church; a very large congregation listed attentively to a sermon from the appropriate text concerning the death of Stephen: "And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

He accompanied his Uncle Jacob Van Meter, Sr. for whom he was named, with a large company of kinsman and friends to Kentucky to settle Elizabethtown in 1779. They had come down the Ohio on 27 barges with their families, household goods and slaves and were given a pass to the Falls of the Ohio, unmolested. Tradition states that they landed at West Point and came inland to Severn's Valley, at the mouth of Billy's Creek, near a big spring; where he defended his family and friends against Indians and where his uncle, Jacob Van Metre, Sr., later built his home and mill for grain. (about 1 1/2 miles from Elizabethtown) it was called "Fort Van Metre" and was one of the first forts built in Kentucky and easily located, as the city of Elizabethtown, still used this spring water for it's water supply as late as 1963.

He and Catherine Ann Covenhoven helped establish the Severn's Valley Baptist Church, the first one west of the Allegheny Mountains 1781.
Later Captain Jacob Van Metre, at a site about 5 miles below his Uncle Jacob's fort on Valley Creek near Glendale, built a for also called Van Metre Fort. He built a Mill and a Still on the land he has acquired.

These forts were needed to defend settlers against Indian raids for several years. Captain Jacob Van Metre's land on both sides of Valley Creek, from Elizabethtown to Blendale and over to White Mills, 12,399 acres, some of the best land in Hardin County.
