Levi Conover was born on 6-Jun-1828 at Beardstown, Cass County, Illinois. He was the son of Peter Conover and Elizabeth Marshall. Levi married Mary Elizabeth Mathews, daughter of Richard Mathews and Margaret Robinson, on 1-Mar-1855. Levi Conover died on 28-Jan-1898 at Lynn Grove Twp., Jasper County, Iowa, at age 69. He removed to at Jasper County, Iowa, circa Mar-1856.
"LEVI CONOVER - Died: At his residence in Lynngrove township, Jasper county, Iowa, Levi Conover, on the evening of the 28th of January 1898, after a few days of suffering from a paralytic stroke. The deceased was born in Cass county, Illinois. At the age of 21 he began life's tempestuous sea for himself and in 1849 undertook the arduous trip of what was called "crossing the plains" to California, where he wrenched out a little means. Part of the time he did not have money enough to buy himself a square meal. In 1854 he came to Iowa and bought the land he remained on until his death. He was married to Mary Mathews in 1855, of Cass county, Illinois. To them were born seven children. All were present at the funeral except one. His companion preceded him about 16 years and at the age of 46 years he made a profession of the religion of Christ in 1867 and from that time he lived a faithful Christian life, most of the time an official in the M. E. Church of Sully. he commenced life with small means, but by unflagging and honest industry had in all together accumulated thirty or forty thousand dollars. The funeral took place from his own home and was conducted by Rev. Kirkwood; President of the M. P. church, taking for his text as a foundation for appropriate remarks, the 14 chapter and 10 verse of Job. A large concourse of friends were in attendance. The remains were laid to rest in Swan cemetery by the side of his companion."
From "Memories Yesterday and Today - Lynnville, 1875-1975" p. 81:
"Levi Conover, elder son of Peter and Elizabeth Marshall Conover, was born June 6, 1828, near Beardstown in Green County, Illinois. He died January 28th, 1898, at his farm home near Lynnville in Jasper County, Iowa.
He married Mary Elizabeth Mathews, daughter of Richard and Margaret Robertson Mathews, March 1, 1855. She was born March 1, 1833 and died February 15, 1882.
When gold was discovered in California in 1849, Levi, a young man of twenty-one, left his home in Illinois, and with other friends, organized their wagon train at St. Louis to make the long dangerous journey with their ox teams to California. This was a six months journey full of peril and danger.
Near Salt Lake City, the wagon train divided due to a dispute on the proper route. Those people who left the train were never heard from again.
After three years in California, Levi returned to Iowa, via Panama Canal, and Mississippi steam boat, with three thousand dollars of gold in his belt. He married his home town sweetheart, and settled two miles northwest of Lynnville. To this union were born eight children: Thomas J., (who married Louise Johnson, the daughter of Caleb, and Miriam Johnson, pastors of the Lynnville 1881 Friends Church); John; Martha; Allie; Ida; Anna; Lou Etta; and Charles Franklin, who labored many years in Africa as a missionary.
The land known as the Conover farms has been in the family name for more than 130 years. They are presently operated by Charles and Bruce Conover, sons of Walton T., grandsons of Thomas J., and great-grandsons of Levi Conover, the forty-niner.
Genealogists have traced this family history back 500 years to Amsterdam in Holland, from where the family originated."

Obituary from "The Newton Journal" February 23, 1882, p. 3 reads:
"DEATH OF MRS. L. CONOVER -- On Wednesday, February 15th, 1882, man(sic) of our citizens were saddened to hear of the death of Mrs. Levi Conover, near Lynnville, this county.
She had been suffereing for months intensely, and the cause of her suffering -- a tumor -- was not discovered until it had gained such proportions and so reduced the sufferer's vitality as to render it doubtful as to her survival of the dangerous operation of removal of the cause - the only hope of life. This dangerous operation was performed with satisfactory skill on the 12th inst (sic), by Dr. Peck, of Davenport, and the patient was quite cheerful for 36 hours afterwards, when she sank rapidly away -- dying sixty-three hours after the operation.
Had she lived till March 1st, 1882, she would have been 49 years of age. She was born in Cass county, Ill., the daughter of Richard and Margaret Mathews; came to Jasper county, Iowa, with her brother, Wm. R. Mathews, in 1854, was married to L. Conover in 1855, and has since lived at the home in which she died. She leaves her husband and seven children to mourn her loss, as well as other relatives and many friends who can never forget the good type of the christian name -- "Mary" Conover.
The funeral services were conducted at the house by Rev. E. S. Drown. The theme of his remarks was "The Vacant Chair" -- founded on the scripture passage "Thou shalt be missed for thy seat will be empty" -- words of Jonathan to David.
The chair or place which she vacated was endowed richly with love and service for her husband, children, relatives and all who came within her reach; with charity for the needy; devotion to the Christian life which she has nearly all her life professed -- being in early life a member of the Presbyterian church, but since 1867, a member of the Methodist church. Her friends mourn not as those who have no hope."

MARY HELEN GROENDYKE
COLUMBUS, N.C. -- Mary Helen Davis Groendyke died Monday, Dec. 3, 2007 at Tryon Estates here. She was 85.
She was a native of Arkansas, a daughter of Thomas Lesille Davis and Blanche Byrom Davis. A resident of Tryon Estates for the past two and a half year, she lived in High Vista and Hendersonville, N.C the prior 19 years.
Following marriage in June 1944 and World War II, she resided with her husband and children in High Bridge and Clinton.
A graduate of Arkansas State University with degrees in history and music, she became a teacher in High Bridge, Clinton and Clinton Township schools. She retired after more than 30 years and became a passionate genealogist, tracing her Davis family to 1790 and Groendykes to 1645.
An avid soloist and choir member, she loved traveling to foreign countries, documenting them with photos and tales for her students.
She served on the Rolling Hills Girl Scout Council as well as the Board of Directors of Clinton's Grandin Library.
Surviving are her husband of 63 years, Sanford Groendyke; daughter Sandra Kay Pott and husband Joel of Rochester Hills, Mich; son John Thomas Groendyke and wife Rita of Glen Gardner; grandchildren Emily, Jessica, and Eric; and great-grandchildren Rhys and Katherine.
A service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Martin Funeral Home, Clinton Township, with interment following in the Lebanon Reformed Church Cemetery.

Elizabeth Barstow Alton was the self-proclaimed “activist wife” who spent 20 years speaking at women’s clubs throughout New Jersey urging members to participate in major projects that would benefit the community. During her talks she often used Mabel Smith Douglass to illustrate what one woman with a vision could accomplish. In 1910, Douglass launched a campaign to establish a women’s college in New Jersey. That campaign led to the creation of Douglass College (part of Rutgers University) in New Brunswick. During her days as a speaker Alton never thought that she would match Mabel Smith Douglass’ accomplishment but in 1966 the state’s proposal to create two new colleges, one possibly to be located in south Jersey, changed Alton’s life forever. From February 1966,
when she spoke to the Kiwanis Club of Atlantic City mentioning the possibility of a local college to February 1969 when the first Board of Trustees met, Alton was the primary force that willed what was to
become Stockton College into existence. Alton’s personal papers from this era are now available for public use in the Archives of the Richard Stockton College Library. This collection includes personal
correspondence, early college history, publicity, and news clippings. Alton died on December 21, 2006 at age 100.
