James Garland was born circa 1827 at Manchester, Lancashire, England. He was the son of Stella Walmsley. James married Amanda Conover, daughter of Stephen Conover and Margaret Ann Reid. James Garland died on 6-Aug-1884; suicide.
Professor James Garland, a musician, music store owner, and music teacher. Garland and his family lived in the large Italianate house on the corner of South First Avenue and Benner Street.

On September 20, 1875, Professor Garland committed the Highland Park crime of the nineteenth century. The attempted murder of his wife Amanda was detailed without reserve for several days in the New Brunswick Daily Times. As his legally separated wife and two daughters were packing their things in preparation to move to an apartment in New Brunswick, Garland unexpectedly returned home from the music store and fired three shots at his wife. Two of the three bullets hit her. She ran outside and collapsed on the front lawn while Garland proceeded to an upstairs bedroom where he shot himself three times, partially slit his throat, and took a hammer to his own skull. Despite his violent attempt at suicide, unconsciousness ultimately saved his life. Neighbors who heard the shots quickly sent for two local doctors. As Dr. English attended to Amanda Garland, the other, Dr. Mulford, attended to the professor. Both Garland, who ultimately spent five years in state prison, and his ex-wife, survived. After her recovery she, along with her children, moved to New Brunswick and continual to run the music store. Garland returned to the New Brunswick area after his prison term. His next attempt at suicide in 1884 was successful.

A. C. GARLAND DIES OF PERITONITIS

Passes Away a Week After Funeral of son Operation Performed Yesterday for Appendicitis Entire Community Sympathises With Grief-Stricken Family of Well Known Musician.

Alfred C. Garland passed away at his home at 316 George street at 3:20 o’clock this morning from an attack of peritonitis, caused by a previous attack of appendicitis. His death followed nine days after the death of his eldest son, Albert M. Garland, of typhoid fever on September 12, and in this double bereavement the family of the well known musician has the sincere sympathy of the entire community. All who heard of the death of Mr. Garland this morning were deeply moved and everyone regarded his death as a personal loss. The deceased was universally liked and his long service as a musician had made him popular everywhere. His genial disposition, kindly manner and readiness to add any project where his services would benefit had endeared him to all.

Mr. Garland was taken ill last Friday a day after the funeral of his son. Dr. Donohue was called in and diagnosed his case at once as appendicitis. He had suffered an attack three years ago, but recovered from it. He was worse on Saturday and an operation was then suggested, but the patient was better on Sunday, when it had been proposed to perform the operation and as he hoped to recover without the aid of the surgeon’s knife no operation was performed. Until yesterday morning he continued to show improvement. Then there was a sudden change for the worse and an immediate operation was decided upon. It was performed at 2:30 o’clock yesterday afternoon by Drs. Donohue, Rice and Buttler. It was found that the disease had reached such an advanced stage that the appendix could hardly be removed without breaking. It did break and the poisonous matter produced blood poisoning and peritonitis at once. The utmost sill of the physicians as well as the care of the trained nurse could not avail and it was soon seen that Mr. Garland could not survive.

Notwithstanding his suffering he remained conscious until the end, during which time he planned for his wife about his business affairs. Mrs. Garland after he long and watchful care of her son and now with the great bereavement of the death of her husband is almost prostrated.

Mr. Garland was the son of the late Prof. James Garland, who was a noted organist in his time and who died several years ago. His widow still survives him residing at Englishtown. She was also a gifted singer in her earlier life. Alfred Garland was born in this city on February 27, 1859. He early showed the musical talent displayed by his parents and while a scholar in the public schools frequently played there and at entertainments. He later was employed in a music publishing house in New York, and for more than a score of years he has been an accompanist, leader of an orchestra and teacher of music. He has been very successful and his services were in constant demand. In recent years no society has felt that its arrangements were complete for a social event unless Mr. Garland’s orchestra had been secured for the dancing. He played constantly for the fashionable clubs and many prominent residents at Rahway, Flemington, Woodbridge, Metuchen, Freenold as well as in this city. On these occasions he would be assisted by his son, Albert. For twenty years he had furnished the music at the Surf House, Asbury Park and later at the Colonial. For many years he was the organist at the First Reformed church.

Although his regular work kept him busy at all times, Mr. Garland always found time to give his services in aid of charity or for the benefit of others. He volunteered to furnish the music at the big firemen’s benefit that Chas. Hammell arranged a score of years ago and which netted over $2,000. He also got up a benefit for Kimball Dunhma a year ago last May after the cornetist was kept from playing by an attack of paralysis. Mr. Garland also gave his services free for the firemen’s benefit given last spring by the Triangle Club.

The deceased was married to Miss Mary Elizabeth Clawson on August 28, 1878. They had fourteen children, eleven of whom survive. They are Misses Minnie, Stella, Jennie, Grace, Kate and Margaret and Frank, Loren, Fred, George and William. He is also survived by his mother and two sisters. He was a member of Friendship Lodge, No. 30, Knights of Pythias and of the Musician’s union of this city and also of St. John’s Episcopal church. The funeral will be held here on Saturday afternoon.
