The first squash court built outside England was built at St. Paul's School (SPS) , in Concord, New Hampshire. The date: November 1884.

It was the work of one man, James Potter Conover. The oldest of nine children, Jay Conover graduated from St. Paul's in 1876 and after going to Columbia, he returned to teach at St. Paul's until 1915. With his steel-blue eyes and infectiously upbeat manner, Conover was a SPS institution. He married Mary Coit, the daughter of Henry Coit , the first rector of St. Paul's, became an ordained Episcopalan priest and wrote two books.

But his greatest influence was in sports. Conover was one of the most celebrated athletes of his era in the U.S. As a high jumper he was the first man to ever jump higher than his height; he led Columbia to notable football victories; a great fencer, he ran the fencing club at SPS; he was the top cricket player at SPS when the sport was the most popular game in New England and batted three-a critical spot-for the school when it played touring sides.

History, though, remembers Conover for a visit he made to Montreal during the Christmas holidays in 1880-1881. A skating enthusiast, Conover saw an early version of ice hockey and brought back to St. Paul's rules and standards, hockey sticks and a wooden block an inch thick covered with leather, soon to be called pucks. Ice hockey was unknown in the U.S., so St. Paul's is rightfully regarded at the birthplace of hockey for America.

While in Canada, Conover also played racquets at the St. George Street court in Montreal. He had played a fair amount of racquets while in New York and, after 1878, was a spirited member of the Racquet Court Club, which had a covered court at its clubhouse at 26th Street and Sixth Avenue (the building is still there). Playing the game again in Montreal, which had first built its racquets court in 1836, Conover remembered the delicious pleasure of smashing a ball against four walls. He decided St. Paul's should have a court.

It took two years, but in January 1883, St. Paul's finished a racquets building. Conover went back to Canada in the autumn of 1881 and hired a contractor from Montreal to build his racquets courts. Placed on the edge of the woods near a pond, the barn-like building, as Conover wrote, "has no pretensions to beauty and grace of outline." Made entirely of maple and birch and painted dark red, it was about sixty by fifty feet, with a steeply-pitched roof of seventy feet, "so as not to allow snow to accumulate upon it" and block the sun. It had four large windows on the front and one giant skylight. Inside were a large vestibule heated by a stove, with a carpeted dressing room partitioned off on one side and a small gallery above and two racquets courts painted white.

The building cost three thousand dollars and Conover formed a Racquet Club to pay for it. Thirty-five students paid fifty dollars to join, and Conover secured donations totalling over a thousand dollars from a number of Racquet Court Club members in New York.

Getting going took a while. Conover ordered two hundred dollars worth of racquets and balls from Arthur Pearson in London, but they were detained for months at the customs house in New York (did the customs officials think they were dangerous weapons?). The court was awkwardkly lit, by windows just on one side and by one skylight and the white walls were too bright in full sunlight. And it was annoying to laboriously slap black paint on all the racquet balls. Conover painted the inside walls black, which "proved to be a great improvement." Then, over the summer of 1883, the walls and floor warped and had to be replaced. The building found itself being used by non-racquets players. In 1884 the fencing club moved their boxes of equipment into the racquet building, "so that the members can fence while awaiting their turns to play" racquets, and in 1887 the school newspaper reported that Mr. Morley, the cricket coach, kept his stock of cricket, base-ball and tennis good for sale in the racquet building.

But they soldiered on and played. They had a series of tournaments each winter and began in the spring of 1883 to crown champions (Conover's son Dick won the championship in 1889). One of the tournaments was "The Lenten Tournament" which ran throughout Lent, with one round each week, with a prize going to the boy who won the most games. Other tournaments were handicapped acording to ability, and they also had a draw for younger boy. Each Christmas holiday, the school held a tournament at the Racquet Court Club in New York, with sometimes fifteen boys participating.

Was it actually racquets? Not really. A racquets court was, and still is, made out of slate or concrete, something hard, not wood. And one single regulation-size racquets court was about the size of the entire racquets building, so their two courts were much smaller. "The larger court and faster walls and floor give a great advantage to the large boys," recorded the SPS monthly newspaper after the 1885 SPS tournament in New York.

But it was not squash, because that came separately. In November 1884, the school newspaper reported that "the 'Squash-ball' courts are ready for play. They are open to all who pay the dues of $1 a year." They are bona fide squash courts because they were designed by a Harrow old boy

In 1930, just after Allison Danzig published his definitive The Racquet Game, a history of tennis, racquets and squash in the U.S., a row developed because Danzig had all but ignored the history of racquets and squash at St. Paul's. This was problematic especially because the SPS racquets courts were the first in the U.S. built outside New York and that the school had the first squash courts in the nation. Conover, then seventy-three, retired and living in Rhode Island, wrote a long letter to a fellow St. Paul's alum who was helping give Danzig a proper account of SPS athletic history. "I got the proper dimensions from Hyde Clark of Cooperstown, NY," wrote Conover of the squash courts. "Hyde had been educated at Harrow in England where they had such courts, and he and I were at Columbia together and both members of the N.Y. Racquet Club and both enthusiastic for racquets and cricket." There is the missing link-Hyde Clark had played squash in the Rugby fives courts at Harrow. Via his friendship with Jay Conover, squash crossed the Atlantic.

Harrow was indeed the model for the four courts. They were badly lit, with no skylights and the back walls were missing. "It is proposed," wrote Conover in the school newspaper, "if the players are incommoded with snow, to inclose the ends with wired glass." The ball was a dark grey rubber ball with a hole in it. And racquets were still considered the proper senior sport. The winner of the spring Lenten tournment in squash was automatically enrolled in the Racquet Club, but other boys had to prove themselves skilled enough in squash to graduate to playing racquets.

Still Conover recommended squash as a sport for schoolboys. "In such a court, the game is not quite so enticing as where the walls are of brick and the ball solid, like a small base-ball," he wrote in the school newspaper. "But the so-called 'squash-ball court' recommended itself to the club for many reasons;-such courts are largely used in English public schools; cost of contruction is much less; fewer raquette bats are broken and fewer balls destroyed; fewer heads are cracked and fewer knees and elbows barked; the danger from being hit by the ball (quite an item among young players) is cancelled."

In 1915 St. Paul's, with a generous donation from Maurice Roche, class of 1905 and grandfather of Lady Diana Spencer, built a new squash facility. It had eight squash courts, all, interestingly enough thirty by twenty-one feet, a size more common then in England that the U.S.-but the reason was simply that the courts were designed and built by the London firm H. M. Rootham, which had built the famous courts at the Royal Artillery Mess in Woolwich.

With its unmatched tradition in squash, it was no surprise that a flood of champions flashed from St. Pauls. The brothers Pool, Larry and Beek, and Bert Rawlins took two national championships in the 1920s and 30s. And more illustrious names followed: John Humes, Seymour and Nordy Knox, Pete Bostwick, Larry Terrell, Charlie Stewart, Jamie Barrett, Robbie MacKay, John Musto and Mac Carbonell.

And the 1884 courts? St. Paul's tore them down in 1915 and today at the spot is an unmarked carpet of thick green grass.

A SERVANT-LEADER

THE CONOVER YEARS

The early development of the Church of Saint Bernard, Bernardsville, is largely the story of its second Rector The Reverend Thomas Anderson Conover (1868-1943, Rector 1899-1939).

The appointment of The Rev. Thomas A. Conover in the summer of 1899 proved fortuitous for the future of the nascent Episcopal church in Bernardsville. He showed himself to be not only a priest of considerable vision and pastoral foresight but also of indefatigable energy. At first he rejected the call from Saint Bernard’s Church. He reconsidered as it became clear that he could carry out his own personal sense of ministry while also serving in Bernardsville: the founding of a school.

Conover arrived in the autumn of 1899 and settled into an inimitable ministry for the next 40 years. The list of effective and long-lived outreaches he started is astounding. Included among his achievements was the development of four other Episcopal Churches, now remembered as the Conover Parishes: Saint Luke’s, Gladstone, The Church of Saint John on the Mountain, Saint Mark’s, Basking Ridge, All Saints’, Millington, and Saint Bernard’s.

Within the parish he organized a Sunday School, Women’s Auxiliary (Women of Saint Bernard’s), Altar Guild, Parish Library, Boys’ Club, Men’s Club, Men’s Reading Room project, Mothers’ Meeting, Kindergarten, a parish nurse program (Somerset Hills VNA), a social work program, a boys’ boarding school in Gladstone (Saint Bernard’s School, now Gill St. Bernard School), a primary school, a sewing school, a summer vacation school, and more.

He oversaw the acquisition of the cemetery, the expansion of the church building in 1904, its interior reconfiguration in 1910, the building of a Rectory and the Parish House, not to mention the addition of a log cabin for the scouting program and the purchase of Saint Martin’s House in 1931.

By way of pastoral care in times of crisis, he served the community through the years of The Great War (World War I), the Great Flu Epidemic, the Stock Market Crash of ’29, and the Great Depression. Parishioners baptized under his care and raised as children in the parish in those years still remember his impulsive charity: how he used to give away his salary to those in need and more than once gave away his own overcoat during the Depression of the 1930s. Perhaps the one demerit keeping him from sainthood is the fact that he was evidently a reckless driver, being a charter member of the first generation of automobile operators in America. As this became more widely known, some parishioners refused to get in a car with him.

By way of changes in the life of the wider communion, 1928 saw the introduction of a new prayer book for the American church. The 1920s and 30s were also the heady years of the global ecumenical movement in which many Anglicans and Episcopalians took the lead. Conover served through these times.

When Thomas Conover retired in 1939, after 40 years of service in the Somerset Hills, it was truly the end of an era.

Rev. Thomas Anderson Conover Early in the 20th Century, the Rev. Thomas A. Conover, rector of St. Bernard’s Church in Bernardsville, New Jersey, established missions in nearby Gladstone, the Bernardsville Hills and Millington. He also was associated with St. Mark’s Church in Basking Ridge. Those five churches (St. Bernard’s, St. Luke’s, St. John on the Mountain, All Saints’ and St. Mark’s) today are commonly referred to as the Conover churches.

Recognizing the value of a retreat in the Christian’s pilgrimage, the late Rev. Conover in 1931 established a house for retreats in Bernardsville. In 1935, the property was incorporated as St. Martin’s House, honoring St. Martin (c.316-397), patron saint of France and of soldiers. For many years, St. Martin’s House served as a center for parish retreats and other opportunities for spiritual renewal.

In the 1950s, in need of serious repair, the retreat house and property were sold, and proceeds were used to create the St. Martin’s House Fund. Interest from the fund continues to support the retreat movement by underwriting part of the costs of retreats, alleviating the financial burden on a parish or mission and on the individual participants. St. Martin’s House Fund makes grants to parishes in the Dioceses of New Jersey and Newark, and to retreat centers that serve those parishes.

A Board of Managers, which consists of the rectors and lay members from the five Conover churches and two other area parishes, administers the grants. The churches are:

St. John on the Mountain, Bernardsville
St. Bernard’s Episcopal Church, Bernardsville
St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Gladstone
St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Basking Ridge
All Saints’ Church, Millington
St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Morristown
The Church of the Redeemer, Morristown

The office of president of the Board of Managers rotates among Conover church clergy.

He was also known as Arthur Lefferts. Arthur, son of Auke and Sarah Schenck Lefferson married Eliza Barcolo (daughter of Tobias Barkalow) on September 24, 1812 by the Rev. Stephen Gard. He and his brothers and sisters were all born in Monmouth County, New Jersey. Eliza was born February 19, 1795 and died August 26, 1825. Arthur migrated to Warren County, Ohio a little before 1810. In 1810 he secured a large tract of land in Lemon Township, Butler County, Ohio on which he passed the remainder of his life in agricultureal pursuits. He was a man of good business ability and sound integrity, merited the respect in whcih he was held by his fellow citizens, and was accounted a helpful and public spirited man in his community. On December 4, 1856 he married Sarah Stout. He died at the age of 83.
From George Crout's 'Middletown Diary: The Leffersons ...While the Lefferson family had its beginning in Holland, its Revolutionary forefather, Auke Lefferso, was born in 1747, and in 1774 married Sarah Schenck. They resided on a farm near Freehold, N.J. One of their children, Arthur, born in 1786, migrated to Ohio, settling in Loemon Township in 1810. He purchased a farm next to Daniel Doty, Middltown's pioneer. Arthur Lefferson's first home in Middletown, like Doty's, was a log cabin. His original log cabin stood behind the present house, a little closer to the Miami River, with the Prairie road running past its door. This road was blazed in 1795 and follows the same route as the present Hamilton-Middletown Road (Route 4) up to a point in South Middletown, where it originally veered westward following more closely the bandks of the Miami River. This section was rerouted around 1828.Lefferson built the cabin and later his house on an elliptical hill overlooking the Great Miami River. Perhaps his neighbor, Daniel Doty, had warned him of the flooding of the river, for there had been a serious flood in 1805. In 1814 another flood certainly confirmed Lefferson's judgement, as did other in 1828 and 1832. When Arthur married Eliza Barkalow in 1812, the log cabin was a comfortble home, but it wasn't long until the family began to grow, with Garret arriving in 1814; Tobias, 1816; Benjamin 1818; Elizabeth, 1820; Sarah, 1821; and Rebecca in 1823. In 1825 his wife died, and an unmarried sister, Anna, moved to Ohio from New Jersey to help Arthur rear
the children. Arthur did not remarry until 1856, taking Sarah Stout as a second wife to be hostess of his home....

Garret Lefferson was born on 21-Jan-1814 at Lemon Twp., Butler County, Ohio. He was the son of Arthur Lefferson and Elizabeth Lane Barkalow. Garret married Rachel Clayton, daughter of Thomas Clayton and Hannah Smith, on 1-Mar-1838 at Butler County, Ohio. Garret married Sarah (Unknown) after 1860 at Butler County, Ohio. Garret married Amanda Hart after 1880. Garret Lefferson died on 16-Jan-1903 at Middletown, Butler County, Ohio, at age 88. Garret was buried on 19-Jan-1903 at Middletown City Cemetery, Middletown, Butler County, Ohio.
Taken from 'Lefferson Family (1650-1976)' by Martha B. Martin with exerpts from Memoirs of the Miami Valley 1919. Garret, son of Arthur and Eliza BarkalowLefferson was born on a farm in Section 8, Lemon Township, Poasttown, Ohio, January 21, 1814 and received a common school education while growing to manhood on his father's farm. He chose agricultural work as his vocation when hecame to decide upon a career, and was still a young man when he located in Leomon Township on a farm. He was compelled to start at the bottom of the ladder, as he was without any great amount of capital, and the land upon which he settled was just as nature had left it, with a great deal of timber. He was a young man of industry and much determineation, however, and soon had his land in a condition for planting crops, from which time foreward his progress was rapid. Mr Lefferson developed a valuable property and a comfortable ome, accumulated a goodly share of the world's goods and in the evening of life retired from active pursuits. Although he lived to be nearly ninety years of age, his memory was remarkable up to the last and he was able to relate many interesting experiences and occurrences of pioneer days in Butler County. He was a man who held the respect of his fellow citizens in marked degree, and for many years served efficiently as a member of the board of school directors. His political support was to the Democratic party. He was married first to Rachel Clayton Bascum (she was the widow of William Bascum and the daughter of Thomas Clayton, born October 5, 1780 died January 28, 1859 and HannahSmith Clayton, born November 21, 1788 died December 21 1868, of near Flenners Corner) on March 1, 1838. Rachel was born July 21, 1814 and died at the age of 46 on June 25, 1860. Hand written note shows: Thomas and Hannah married January 18, 1807. Garret Lefferson is another of the pioneer farmers of old Butler. In fact he has been a farmer all his days and prefers that mode of life above every other. It was some fifty-four years ago when Mr. Lefferson, then a young man of 30 years of age, settled on the place where he still lives. IT was a tangled wilderness, and as different in appearance as could beimagined from the fine place one now sees in passing along the road. The farm is situated in a beautiful country just northeast of Middletown and comprises 275 acres of some of the finest farming land in Lemon Township. Mr Lefferson was born just south of Poasttown, where Mrs. Henry Paulin now lives. When quite a young man, and before loacting on his farm, Mr. Lefferson lived inMiddletown. Mr. Lefferson has been married three times. AFter his first wife's death he married Sarah Randloph, the widow of Benjamin Randolph who ran a waw yard at Flenner's Corner over forty years ago. His last wife was Amanda Hart of Lebanon. Twelve children were born to Mr. Lefferson, five of who are still living, four in the country and the other at Eaton. From Newspaper - Middletown Journal - Prominent Farmers of Butler County, with Picture. Pleasant call on Garret Lefferson Made by a Journal Representative. The old gentleman who is in his eighty-fourth year is cheerful, happy and enjoys life as much as the schoolboy of ten summers. Yesterday afternoon we enjoyed the pleasure of a call upon our friend and neighbor, Mr. Garret Lefferson at his home in the country near Blue Ball. Mr. Lefferson but a few weeks ago overturned in the creek near his home and sustained injuries which have kept him in bed ever since. At the age of eighty-four he is as full of courage and pluck as he was when fifty. This is the second serious accident to this venerable man,as some nine years ago he was attacked by a mad cow in his woodland pasture and severly hurt, but his presence of mind and pluck saved his life and brought him back to health again. We found him cheer.
