Col. E. W. Conover, of Middletown, died on Sunday night at the age of 71 years. He had been sick about five weeks, having been taken down with a brain trouble the night the accident occurred at the State fair, where Charles Woolley, the driver of one of his horses, had been injured. he was unconcious for several days previous to his death, his last lucid interval being on Tuesday night of last week. About a year ago his wife died, and shortly afterward he had a stroke of paralysis, which had affected him more or less until his death. His funeral took place at his late residence on the red Bank and Middletown turnpike at one o'clock this afternoon, and was very largely attended. The remains were interred in Fair View cemetery.

Col. Conover was born in the upper part of the state in 1816. In 1849 he settled in Middletown and had resided there ever since. He was famous as a breeder and raiser of fast trotters, and his horses had taken many premiums at the State and county fairs, as well as at the great Western trotting circuits. His stock farm at Middletown comprised about two hundred acres. In 1870 he laid out and constructed a half-mile training track on his farm, which is one of the best tracks of its kind in the State. he raised many fast horses, among the best known being the brood mare Emeline, whose record as a dam of trotting horses is among the best in the country. Other noted trotting horses of his raising are Kate Taylor, Augusta Schuyler, Alice Blackwood, Ray Gould, Daisy Hatshorne, Rachel C. and Carrie R., the breedings stallion Jersey Prince, and two young stallions, on by Jay Gould and the other by Gen Washington.

Mr. Conover was genial in disposition and was of a very generous nature. He had a very wide circle of friends, who were attracted to him for his many excellencies of character. His wife died on the last day of November of last year. He leaves three children, W. W. Conover, jr., Harvey G. Conover, and Emeline who is now the wife of H. C. Taylor, of Middletown. W. W. Conover and Mrs. Emeline Taylor both reside at Middletown. Col. Conover's other son, harvey G. Conover, lives in the northern part of New York State, where he is the superintendent of a large stock farm.

Farm Bureau and Hunterdon County Board of Agriculture, where she was a former chair of its dairy process committee. She was secretary of East Amwell Board of Education from 1965 to 1966, treasurer of Union Cemetery in Wertsville, and trustee of Hunterdon Medical Center in Raritan from 1979 to 1986. Daughter of the late John R. and Jennie Lindabury Haver and wife of the late Robert Manners, she is survived by a daughter, Deborah Lentine of East Amwell; a son, R. Gregory Manners of East Amwell; two sisters, Margaret Cobb of Annandale and Carol Fraze of Lebanon; and two grandchildren. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Kirkpatrick Memorial Presbyterian Church, John Ringo Road, Ringoes. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Wertsville.
