John Lyell Conover was born on 18-Sep-1820 at New Jersey. He was the son of Peter G. Conover and Charlotte Lyell. John married Abigail Marie Bishop circa 1843. John Lyell Conover died on 16-Mar-1900 at age 79. John was buried at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown, Monmouth County, New Jersey.
He was also known as John Lyall Covenhoven. John Lyell Conover of Wickatunk Drops Dead in His room
John Lyell Conover of Wickatunk died suddenly of apoplexy last Friday morning. He had had two very severe attacks of sickness during the past two years, but he had recovered from these and was in apparently good health. On Friday morning he arose at his usual hour and made his customary tour of the barn and other farm buildings. He returned to the house and went to his room for a moment. His family heard him fall to the floor and they went to see what was the matter. When they reached his side he was dead.

Mr. Conover was a descendent of the early Dutch settlers and was born in the same room in which he dropped dead. The house where he was born and where he died was built by the early Dutch settlers, and has been in the Conover family for more than 200 years. It is stored with old Dutch family records and family bibles, and contains a great deal of furniture that was brought over from Holland by the early Dutch settlers.

Mr. Conover was a Republican from the time of the organization of that party. He voted for Fremont and for every other presidential candidate of that party. Forty years ago he was one of the leading Republicans of Monmouth county and he took a prominent and an active part in the party campaigns. He was a personal friend of Governors Charles S. Olden, Marcus Ward and William A. Newell, and was one of their stanchest (sic) supporters when they ran for office. Of late years he had retired from active political life, although he maintained his interest in the Republican party up to the time of his death. He was a constant reader of the New York Tribune and had read it daily, from the time the first number was issued by Horace Greeley. At the time of his death he was still a subscriber to that paper. For many years he held office in Middletown township, and for seven years was assessor there. In those days the Republicans had no show to elect any of their candidates on the Republican ticket, and Mr. Conover was placed on the Democratic ticket because of the universal esteem in which he was held and because of his fitness. After the organization of the internal revenue system by the national government during the civil war, he was for a time assessor of internal revenue. His office at that time was at Red Bank, in the second story of the building which stood on the present location of Philip Kuhl’s barber shop.

Mr. Conover was the son of Peter G. Conover and Margaret Lyell. He was born in 1812. He married Abigail Bishop of Keyport, a sister of Captain Bishop of that place. His living children are Charles P. Conover, Edwin B. Conover and Mrs. J. C. Schanck of Homdel, Mrs. T. H. Roberts of Rahway, Mrs. Sarah Mack of Philadelphia and Clarence and Miss Florence Conover, who live at home. He leaves also two brothers, Lafayette Conover of Wickatunk and Garrett Conover of Marlboro.

The funeral was held at the house on Monday, and the burial was at Fair view cemetery. Mr. Conover was one of the original stockholders of this cemetery and was president of the cemetery association up to five years ago, when he retired on account of failing health. During his residence in Middletown township he occupied what is now the Major Field farm. Fourteen years ago, on the death of his father at the family homestead farm at Wickatunk, he moved back to the homestead farm and remained there until his death.

Lafayette Conover Dead

He Died Last Friday From a Stroke of Paralysis

He Was One of the Wealthiest Farmers of Monmouth County and for Many Years was a Political Leader in Marlboro Township

Lafayette Conover of Wickatunk, one of the wealthiest and most widely known farmers of Monmouth county, died on Friday of paralysis, aged 79 years. He had been in failing health for several months but had been confined to the bed only ten days. He was active in both body and mind until stricken with the shock that terminated fatally. His funeral was held on Monday at the house and was conducted by Rev. A. I. Martine, pastor of the old Brick Reformed church at Bradevelt.

Lafayette Conover was a direct descendent of the Covenhoven (or Conover) family that came over from Holland in 1680 and located on Manhattan island. The first of this family to locate in Monmouth county was John Conover, great-grandfather of Lafayette Conover. He came to this county in 1704 and settled on the farm of the late Peter G. Conover at Bradevelt, which is still in possession of the Conover family. Conover's sons were John Lyell, Lafayette, Stacy P., Garrett P. and Charles. Garrett, who lives at East Freehold, in the only one who survives. Stacy P. died a number of years ago and John Lyell died about a year ago on the homestead farm. He also had three daughters, all of whom are dead.

Lafayette Conover was born in 1822. He attended the district school until he was fifteen years old and his services were then needed on the farm. He worked on the farm with his father until 1846, when he married Elizabeth Schenck, daughter of William R. Schenck of Marlboro township. She survives him and he also leaves a son and a daughter. The son is ex-Freeholder Charles E. Conover, who lives across the road from his father's farm, and the daughter is Mrs. Jennie Millspaugh, wife of Charles Millspaugh, who lived near her father's place until a few months ago, when the family moved to Brooklyn. Two other children died in infancy.

Upon his marriage in 1846 Mr. Conover moved to Nut Swamp, in Middletown township, on a farm which he and his brother, John Lyell Conover, bought together. Two years later he returned to Marlboro township and bought the farm of his wife's father, on which he lived until the time of his death. This farm adjoins the farm on which he was born and also adjoins the farm of his brother, Stacy P. Conover. Besides engaging in farming Mr. Conover conducted a distillery for a good many years, but of late years the distillery has not been in operation. He was very successful as a farmer and he was reputed to be one ot the wealthiest farmers in Monmouth county. The farm on which he lived is one of the finest in the county. The house is large and of commanding appearance and the outbuildings and grounds are kept in fine shape. He also owned the farm on which his son lives and the farm on which his daughter lived until her removal to Brooklyn. The farm on which his son lives formerly belonged to Judge Spader. The farm contains a little over one hundred acres and Mr. Conover paid $18,000 for it. This was during the civil war, when farm land was very high.

In practice Mr. Conover was a Democrat, and he had been active in the political affairs of the county and of the township in which he lived. He served for seven years on the board of freeholders and was a member of the committee that built the new court house and jail after the original buildings were destroyed by fire. He had been a member of the township committee of Marlboro township and collector of the township. He was active in political affairs at the time when ex-Judge John W. Herbert was leader of the Republican party in Marlboro township, and many a hard-fought battle was waged between them at primaries at Marlboro village at the time when voting was done by squad and when the followers of the rival leaders would line up on either side of the public road to be counted. Mr. Conover had always been associated with the old Brick church and was one of the largest contributors toward its support. He was at one time director and treasurer of the Keyport transportation company and a director of the Freehold and New York railroad.

Mr. Conover's life was characterized by honesty and strict integrity in all his dealings. He was of a warm-hearted, genial nature, and was held in high regard by all who knew him.

A Rich Farmer's Will

Chas. E. Conover Gets Most of his Father's Property

Lafayette Conover Bequeathed to His Daughter, Mrs. Charles H. Millspaugh, $6,000, and Left All the Rest of His Estate to His Son

Lafayette Conover of Marlboro township made his will on the 15th day of last December. Mr. Conover owned three farms at the time of his death, and he also owned considerable personal property. One of these farms was the homestead property, which was formerly owned by Mr. Conover's father-in-law, William R. Schanck. Another farm adjoined the homestead farm, and had been bought by Mr. Conover from William Spader. This farm is occupied by Mr. Conover's son, Charles E. Conover. These two farms together contained about 174 acres. The other farm was bought by Mr. Conover from James Johnson, and contains about 149 acres. This farm was occupied for upwards of twenty years by Mr. Conover's daughter, Jane Elizabeth Millspaugh, and her husband, Charles H. Millspaugh. A few months ago Mr. and Mrs. Millspaugh moved from the farm and are now living in Brooklyn.

Mr. Conover left to his widow, Elizabeth Conover, the use of the homestead house and the use of the garden and grounds about the house, as long as she should live. He also left her an annuity of $500, which sum is to be paid to her annually in advance. The will provides that the first payment of $500 shall be made one month after Mr. Conover's death, and that as long as Mrs. Conover shall live a payment of $500 shall be made annually on that day. As Mr. Conover died on the 12th day of July the first payment will be made on August 12th. This annuity is made a charge on the property devised to Mr. Conover's son, Charles E. Conover. Charles E. Conover is also to provide for his mother's use a horse and carriage, to be used by her whenever she wishes. After Mrs. Conover's death the household goods and furniture left by Lafayette Conover are to be equally divided between his son and daughter.

The homestead farm and the adjoining farm which was bought from William Spader were left to Charles E. Conover, subject to his mother's life right in the property and subject also to the payment to her of the annuity of $500. Charles E. Conover also gets a woodlot of ten acres in Marlboro township, adjoining the lands of Charles Boice and others, and which was formerly owned by William R. Schanck. Another tract of woodland, which was bought by Lafayette Conover in two parcels, one from John S. Whitlock and one from William Spader, and which woodland adjoins lands of the heirs of Jonathan I. Morgan, was also left to Charles E. Conover.

Lafayette Conover bequeathed to his daughter, Jane Elizabeth Millspaugh, the sum of $6,000. In his will Mr. Conover states that he left only this amount to his daughter "in consideration of what my daughter, Jane Elizabeth Millspaugh, wife of Charles Millspaugh, has had from me, in almost the free use of one of my farms, containing 149 acres for 22 years; her husband having on April 1st, 1879, given me his note for $2,000 but paid neither principal nor interest thereon." This bequest to his daughter is still further modified. The homestead farm was bought from Mr. Conover's father-in-law, William R. Schanck, and Mr. Conover's widow owned an undivided one-third interest in the farm. Mr. Conover provided in his will that if his widow should leave any part of her interest in the homestead farm to Mrs. Millspaugh, or if his widow should die without a will and Mrs. Millspaugh thereby become entitled to any part of the homestead farm, that the value of the portion of the farm so received by Mr. Millspaugh shall be deducted from the $6,000 she is to receive from her father, Mr. Conover expressly stating that he desires his daughter to receive in the aggregate no more than the sum of $6,000.

Charles E. Conover was made the executor of his father's will and he was directed to sell the farm which his father had bought from James Johnson and which was occupied for so many years by Mr. and Mrs. Millspaugh. All the remainder of Lafayette Conover's estate, after paying the special bequests mentioned, is to go to Charles E. Conover.

The witnesses to the will were John P. Walker and J. Clarence Conover of Freehold.
