BRIDGEWATER -- Lincoln A. Smestad, 91, died peacefully Friday (June 8, 2007) at NJ Eastern Star Home in Bridgewater.

Lincoln was born in Irvington, and formerly resided in Somerville before moving to Bridgewater in 1947. He was employed as a letter carrier for the Somerville Post Office for over 25 years, retiring in 1973. After his retirement, Lincoln worked for Somerset Medical Center as a maintenance assistant in the purchasing department.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during during World War II. Lincoln was a charter member of the Green Knoll Fire Co. serving as Fire Chief from 1959 to 1960. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Somerville. Lincoln enjoyed hunting, fishing and reading and will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Eleanor F. Mason; son, Kenneth G. Smestad and his wife, Louise; and grandson, Erik.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bruce C. VanArsdale Funeral Home, 111 N. Gaston Ave., Somerville, (908) 725-3111. Interment will follow with full military honors at Fairmount Cemetery in Tewksbury. Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
