Married at the home of the Bride's Parents in Maple Valley township, on Wednesday evening March 7, Mr. Bert S. Thayer and Miss Ells Wall. Rev J. L. Whitney officiating. Nearly one hundred friends were present at seven o'clock, when to the strains of the wedding march played by Miss Edith Parker, the bridal pair took thier appointed place and took the vows of matrimony. Miss Alice Comer, of Dubuque county attended the bride, while the groomsman was Art Thayer. Mr. Thayer is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Enos Thayer, and a worthy young man. Mrs. Thayer is the eldest Daughter of Geo. Wall, a young lady who has many friends, because of her admirable qualities. They will make thier home in the Valley.

Page: 181. Sarah Ella Wall died on 8-May-1955 at Buena Vista County Hospital, Storm Lake, Buena Vista County, Iowa, at age 75. Sarah was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, Alta, Buena Vista County, Iowa.
      Mrs. Ella Thayer, daughter of George and Jennie Wall was born Sept.20,1879 near Alta. She passed away in the Buena Vista county hospital on May 8,1955 in her 76th year.
She had lived all her life in the Alta and Storm Lake communities, receiving her education at Alta and living in both communities since her marriage.
She was united in marriage to B. R. Thayer on March 7,1900, to this union two children were born Orville and Ila.
Her husband passed away in 1928. Surviving her are her two Children Orville of Storm Lake and Mrs. D. B. Boyd of Early, one brother-in-law Bert Hatch of Alta; seven grandchildren and seven great Grandchildren; other more distant relatives and many friends.
Mrs. Thayer was a member of the Methodist Church living out the Christain Faith at her best. She was a quiet home loving woman, one who made her family center of her life. She loved flowers and made them her hobby. She kept active until a few days before her death, for to her activity was a necessity, She loved to be outdoors, expressing herself in doing the things that she saw to do with her hands.
Services were held from the Hughes funeral home at 1:30 and 2 o'clock from the Methodist church with Rev. C.R. Buckwalter officiating. Mrs. Don Madsen sang with Chas. Bryant at the organ.
Bearers were Thayer Patterson, Lowell Larson, Ralph Hatch, Robt. Schroll, Leslie Thayer, Harold Wall. Interment in Woodlawn cemetery at Alta, IA.

      County resident 48 years dies. Bert Thayer passes away at his home in this city; Long Illinois
Bert Thayer resident of this county for 48 years and one of the most well-known and highly esteemed resident of the community died at his home on West 5th Street last Thursday night. Mr. Thayer had been an ill health for many years, his illness being due to an injury received as in young manhood. For several months he had been in failing rapidly and for the past few weeks his condition has been serious.
Bert Thayer was born May 5, 1874 in Mora, Manson County, Illinois, and at the time of his death, Oct. 25th, 1928 was 54 years five months and 20 days of age.
He lived Illinois until the spring of 1882, when he moved with his parents to Storm Lake, IA and settled on a farm in Maple Valley Township.
March 7 1900, he was united marriage to Miss Ella Wall, and two children came to gladden their home, they are Orville Robert Thayer, on the home place, and Ida May, now Mrs. B. B. Boyd, at home.
Mr. Thayer and his family resided on their Maple Valley Township until the spring of 1921 when they move to their present home on West 5th Street, Storm Lake.
Besides his devoted wife and two children he is survived by two grandchildren, Dorothy Ann Thayer and Marion Louise Boyd, two brothers and two sisters; Harry and Claudia Thayer of Storm Lake, Arthur of Alta and Mrs. Ollie Crouse of Hollywood CA. He also leaves his other relatives and a host of friends. Mr. Thayer was a devoted husband and father and a kind friend and neighbor and was held in the highest regard by all who knew him.
Funeral services were held from the home last Saturday afternoon at 2:00 conducted by the Rev. O. M. Bond, assisted by the Rev. J. L. Whitney of Early. Rev. Whitney preached the funeral sermon. He officiated at the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Thayer 28 years ago and also the marriage of their daughter. His sermon was most impressive. A quartet composed of Mr. and Mrs. Ira Angier, Mrs. Amy D. Woodruff and Fred Jones, saying several selections during the funeral service. Mrs. Buren Anderson was the accompaniment. Burial was at the Alta Cemetery. The funeral was largely attended and the flower offerings were many and beautiful and showing the highest esteem in which Mr. Thayer was held. The pallbearers were George Angier, Ira Angier, John Coulson, Charles Schlief, Albert Brecher and George Totman of Quimby.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Wall, Mr. and Mrs. James Forkner of Gaza were among those from out of town in attendance at the funeral. Many other relatives and friends from the Alta vicinity as well as many from Storm Lake community attended.

Farber and Otteman Funeral home, Storm Lake is in charge of arrangements. The Rebecca services will be held February 10th at 7 PM and Farber and Otteman Funeral home. She was born Feb. 22, 1906 to Bert and Ella (Wall) Thayer in Buena Vista County. She married B.D. Bill Boyd on May 18, 1927 in Storm Lake. She was a member of the Rebecca Lodge No. 205, Storm Lake.

Preceding her and death for her parents; husband; one daughter Dorothy Mae; one brother Orville Thayer; and two grandchildren. Survivors include one son James Boyd, Atlantic; two daughters Mrs. Marion (Marcellus) Wernimont, Rembrandt, and Mrs. Norbert (Elise) Kacmarynski, Lynn Grove; 29 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren.

      Services for Deruelle Barr Boyd, 83, of Nemaha were held Tuesday, Dec.17 at the United Methodist Church, Early, with the Revs. Gary Bird and Robert Lemmerman officiating. Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Alta, under the direction of the Farber and Otteman Funeral Home, Storm Lake, Iowa.

Boyd Died Dec. 15,1985 at the Methodist Manor , Storm Lake. Deruelle Barr, the son of Audley and Martha Mondorff Boyd, was born Sept.5,1902 at Mercer Co. Penn. On May 18,1927, he was united in marriage to Ila Mae Thayer at Storm Lake. He was a mechanic at the Ford garage, later in partnership with Bill's City Service Station, Storm Lake, and then farmed in the Nemaha area until retirement.

Boyd served on the Storm Lake fire department, Administrative Board and Board of Trustees if the Early United methodist Church, Delware Township Trustee, Farm Bureau board of directors, and was a school bus driver for the Hayes Community and Crestland Community School.

Preceding him in death were his parents, one daughter, Dorothy Mae; two grandchildren, three sisters, Amelda, Beulah and Marion and four brothers, Andrew, Charles, David and John. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Marcellus (Marion) Wernimont of Rembrandt, Mrs. Nobert (Elise) Kacmarynski of Linn Grove and one Son James Boyd of Early; 29 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.

     She was graduated in 1946; Hayes High School, Storm Lake, IA. Marion Wernimont, age 74 of Rembrandt passed away Sunday, Aug. 3rd, 2003 at the Longhouse Northshire Inc. nursing home in Spencer, Iowa. Funeral services for Marion Wernimont will be held on Thursday, Aug. 7 at 10:00 AM at the St. Marys Catholic Church in struggling. Burial will be in the Lonetree Cemetery at Cedar Rapids, with the Fratzke Jensen funeral home in charge of arrangements. Marian Louise Boyd was born on Aug. 27, 1928 at the home of her grandmother Thayer in Storm Lake, the daughter of Durelle Bill and Ila Thayer Boyd. She graduated from the Hayes High School in 1946. On December 22, 1949 she was united marriage to Marcellus William Wernimont of Sulfur Springs at the St. Marys Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Fifteen children were born to this union. The couple started farming in the Laurens area and lived in Pocahontas for seven years. In 1956, they move to Auburn and in 1964 the move to the Rembrandt area where they were dairy farmers, Marcellus and Marian moved into town of Rembrandt in 1980. They stay busy by attending farmers markets and catering Dads Belgium Waffles for fund raisers and occasions. Marian's membership includes St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sioux Rapids honorary member of the St. Joseph's guild she was also a member of the Twins club in Storm Lake. Her hobbies and interest included gardening, her flowers baking, reading and sewing. Her collections included statues of the Virgin Mary angels and Boyd Bears Her life priorities was that of raising her fifteen children. She enjoyed doing whatever she could for children grandchildren great-grandchildren. She is he survived by seven sons of their wives, Michael and Myna of Sioux Rapids, Mark and Karen Sac City, Marvin and Cindy of Rembrandt, Martin and Beth of Waterloo, Maynard and Kathy of Clarksdale MS, Myron Sandy of Spencer and Milo and Mary also of Sioux Rapids; seven daughters and their husbands Marilyn and Jim Nelson of Albert City, Margaret and Scott McDermott at Estherville, Mary and Blair Raveling of Lynn Grove, Marita & Don Kenyon of Storm Lake, Maxine and Larry Hoffman of Des Moines, Marsha and John Arndt of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Marlys and Bob Jennings of Algona; a daughter-in-law, Betty Wernimont of Spirit Lake; 34 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Other Survivors included are her brother James Boyd of Atlantic; sister, Elise, Mrs. Norbert Kacmarynski of Lynn Grove and sister-in-law Sister Agnes Wernimont of Hiawatha and Patty Wernimont Pike of Prescott AZ. She is precedent death by her parents; Sister Dorothy Mae; husband Marcellus in 1998; Son Mendal; granddaughter Lisa Nelson Sauter; son-in-law Philip McHugh; parents in law Tony and Agnes Wernimont; sister-in-law Melba Boyd, brother-in-law Cleo Wernimont; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Tom Cox and his wife Anna.

      Dorothy Mae Boyd was born on 7-Oct-1936. She was the daughter of Deruelle Barr Boyd and Ila Mae Thayer. Dorothy Mae Boyd died on 5-Apr-1937 at Storm Lake, Buena Vista County, Iowa. Dorothy was buried on 7-Apr-1937 at Woodlawn Cemetery, Alta, Buena Vista County, Iowa.
      On Monday morning of this week, Dorothy Mae Boyd, 6 -month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Boyd of Storm Lake was found dead in her bed. The little lady had been fed at 4 that same morning and apparently was in a normal condition. Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon, with Rev. M. P. Arrasmith in charge. The young lady would have been six months old on April 7th. Besides her parents is survived by two older sisters Marian and Elise. Mrs. Boyd is a niece of Mrs. B. R. Hatch of Alta.

Marcellus William Wernimont

      Marcellus William Wernimont was born on 11-Nov-1927 at Manning, Carroll County, Iowa. Marcellus married Marian Louise Boyd, daughter of Deruelle Barr Boyd and Ila Mae Thayer, on 22-Feb-1949 at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, Storm Lake, Buena Vista County, Iowa. Marcellus William Wernimont died on 6-Oct-1998 at Marian Health Center, Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa, at age 70. Marcellus was buried on 12-Oct-1998 at Lone Tree Cemetery, Sioux Rapids, Buena Vista County, Iowa.
     He began military service on 27-Feb-1946; Air Force. Marcellus William Wernimont was born Nov. 11, 1927, at Manning to Anton (Tony) and Agnes Catherine Wernimont. He and a sister Agnes Marcellus Wernimont, now sister Agnes of Canton, Missouri, moved with their parents to the Sulfur Springs area. They lived on several different farms until his parents bought a small farm in Providence Township, section 3. Here a brother Cleo George Wernimont and later a sister Anna Catherine Wernimont Cox were born. Marcellus spent his boyhood here on a farm helping his parents who opened a small truck vegetable farms selling vegetables and sweet corn in Storm Lake, Fort Dodge, Carol and the Sioux City area. He attended school at Sulfur Springs Consolidated School and at St. Mary's Grade School in Storm Lake. He entered the service in November of 1945 receiving and honorable discharge in 1946. He worked in and around the Storm Lake area until February of 1949 when he began farming in Pocahontas County.

On Feb. 22nd, 1949, he was united in marriage to Marian Louise Boyd, born Aug. 27, 1928, at Storm Lake to Deruelle Barr Boyd and Ila Mae (Thayer) Boyd. Her father was a garage mechanic for almost 20 years in Storm Lake and was a member of the Storm Lake Fire Department for over ten years. In 1941 he moved his family to the farm in Hayes Township, later to a farm near Early and then to their own farm near Nemaha, where he and his wife Ila still live.

Marian attended Storm Lake grade school and graduated from the Hayes Consolidated High School. She worked as a dental assistant for Dr. M. E. Whiteside and the Thompson Food Market until she was marriage. Their first home was on a farm south of Laurens and in 1955 they moved to farm near Auburn in Calhoun County with their six children. In 1964 they returned with their family of 13 children to Buena Vista County to their own farm in Scott Township, section 23. They started a dairy farm and did custom farming besides starting a small gravel business on the side. In 1980 they moved with five of their children to their new home in Rembrandt. Marcellus remained active in farming, dairy and gravel with his sons. Marcellus belongs to the Farm Bureau, Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. Marian belongs to the Buena Vista County Mothers of Twins Club. They both are members of St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Sioux Rapids. They are parents of 15 children.

Services for Marcellus William Wernimont, 70, Rembrandt, were held Monday, Oct. 12 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church, Storm Lake. Father Clara Boes officiated. Burial was in the Lone Tree Cemetery, Sioux Rapids, with military graveside rights by the Garber Rowe American Legion Post No. 394 of Sioux Rapids. Farber and Otteman funeral home, Storm Lake, was in charge of arrangements.

He died Tuesday, Oct. 6 at the Marian Health Center, Sioux City. Marcllus was born in November 11, 1927, in Manning to Anthon (Tony) and Agnes Gehling Wernimont. At an age, he moved with his parents to a farm near Sulfur Springs. He attended school at Sulfur Springs and at St. Mary's Catholic school, Storm Lake. Feb. 27, 1946, he was drafted into the Air Force. After receiving his honorable discharge April 11, 1947, he worked at Buena Vista College in as a janitor, cooked in various restaurants in the area, and helped his father farm.

Feb. 22, 1949, he was united in marriage to Marian Boyd at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Storm Lake. They then moved to Pocahontas County and farmed. In December 1955, they move to a farm near Auburn. Nine years later, they move to a dairy farm near Rembrandt, and in 1988 move to Rembrandt. Marcellus helped operate a gravel business with his sons near Sioux Rapids for a number of years and continue to farm. In 1986, Marcellus and Marian sold fresh vegetables at the area farmers markets, where they specialized in sweet corn. In 1991 he started a catering service called Dad's Belgium Waffles. He retired in 1993.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Farm Bureau, American Legion Post No. 394 of Sioux Rapids, the Sioux Rapids Dairy Association, was a 50 year member of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the Jolly Elders. His hobbies included playing Santa Claus, gardening, cooking and traveling.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Cleo; a son-in-law Philip McHugh; and a sister-in-law and Melba Boyd.       Funeral rites for Harry E. Thayer, a prominent and highly respected resident of Hayes township, who died Monday in Long Beach, Ca. were held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist Church at 2:30. The Witter brothers quartet sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Aibe With Me". Rev. M.P. Arramith conducted the service.
Burial was in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Pallbearer were his two sons, Homer and Leslie, two Son-in-laws, Carl Foell and Ralph Diehl, and two grandsons, Kenneth Foell and Paul Diehl.
Harry E. Thayer was born January 29, 1867 in Maroa,Ill. In 1882 he came to Iowa with his parents settling on a farm in Hayes Township. He was a member of a family of five children three boys and two girls. One brother and one sister has preceded him in death.
In 1892, February 6, he was united in Marriage to Miss Ida Totman and they made thier home in Hayes township, the place that in now known as the Thayer farm. To this union were born four children; Homer, Mrs. Carl Foell (Berniece), Mrs. Ralph Deihl (Ruth), all of Storm Lake, and Leslie Thayer of Clear Lake. Mrs. Thayer died Dec. 16,1926.
In 1928 he was married to Mrs. Nancy VanCleve who preceded him in death in 1935, the same year his sister Claudia passed away.
ON Oct.15,1936 Mr. Thayer and Mrs. Ada Grieve were married at the Methodist parsonage and a few weeks later they went to Long Beach, Ca. for the winter months. On Feb.25 he was taken suddenly ill with heart attack and was taken to the Harrimon Jones clinic hospital were he passed away on the eighth of March.
Mr. Thayer was a man of commendable character, winning the highest respect and confidence of all his friends, neighbors and business associates He was a devoted Christian and an active in the affairs of the Methodist Church. He was very much devoted to his home and family and took great interest in his grandchildren.
Those who are left to mourn his passing are his wife; four children, a brother Art, near Alta, one sister Mrs. Ollie Crouse of Los Angles,Ca; and twenty-one grandchildren. Herbert and Marguerite Thayer, Mrs. Ralph Snider, Kenneth, Kathryn and Harold Foell, Paul, Doris and Robert Diehl, Jimmy and Janet Thayer.

The bride being a daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth Scambler living east of town and is a young woman of personal charm having a large circle of friends. The groom is a young farmer and is a man of steady and industrious habits. They will make thier home on a farm southeast of Town.

     He Methodist Church, Alta 22-Dec-1907. He was retired in 1948. Arthur Thayer, prominent Buena Vista County resident since 1885, passed away Friday morning, February 29, 1952 in the Sioux Valley Hospital, Cherokee. He was 72 years, three months, and 18 days at the time of his death.

Mr. Thayer was the son of Enos and Elizabeth Thayer and was born in Moroa, Illinois on Nov. 11th, 1879. The family moved to a farm near Storm Lake when Arthur was six years of age. On January 23rd, 1906 he was united in marriage with Anna Scrambler and after their marriage they moved to a farm near Alta. To this union, two children were born, one daughter, Mrs. Florence Stabelfeld of Aurelia, and a son Floyd, of Denver, Colorado.

The family moved to Alta in 1926 where Mr. Thayer worked for about 20 years for the Alta Creamery. He worked as a faithful hauler for the Creamery until his retirement in 1948. Mrs. Thayer passed away April 15, 1947. On Jul. 27th 1940 Arthur married Mrs. Emma Weiland and they have lived in Alta since that time. Mr. Thayer's hearing has been impaired for many years, but he managed to enjoy working in his garden and attending athletic contests; Seldom did he miss a local basketball game when his health permitted him to attend. He became a member of the First Methodist Church in Alta, on Dec. 22nd, 1907,and attended services as long as is hearing enabled him to benefit from the worship.

He was preceding death by his father and mother, two brothers, and one sister. In one sister, Mrs. Ollie Crouse, of North Hollywood, California, survives. To mourn his passing are his wife, Emma; son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Stabelfeld south of Aurelia; son and daughter in law, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Thayer, and grandchildren, Diana and Sandra Kay, of Denver CO; four stepchildren, Clarence Weiland, of Alta, Violet Hillmer of Jeffers, Minnesota, Lilly Probst Terril, Emma Scott of Des Moines; 8 step grandchildren and many friends in this area.

Funeral services were held in the First Methodist Church, Alta with the pastor Rev. Newton Coughenour, officiating, on Monday, March 3rd, 1952, at 2 PM. Mr. Murray Jimmerson sang two selections accompanied by Mrs. Mary M. Puffett. Interment was held in the Woodlawn Cemetery under the direction of the Jones Funeral service.

      Elizabeth J. Betty Snider, 86, of Grinnell died Tuesday, June 10, at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center. A the memorial service for Betty Snider will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, July 13, at the Smith funeral home with the Rev. Bob Cook chaplain at Mercy hospital in Des Moines, officiating.
The daughter of Homer and Helen Puffett Thayer she was born Nov. 24, 1916 in Storm Lake. She was a 1935 graduate of Storm Lake high school.
She married Ralph A. Snider on Dec. 30, 1935 in Newton and the couple made their home in Washington, D.C. prior to moving to Grinnell in 1947.
She was employed for 40 years as a manager for the school lunch program in the Grinnell Newburg school district. She retired in 1996.
She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the Grinnell Newburg Education Association and longtime volunteer at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.
She survived by two daughters, Virginia Ginny Vitera of Grinnell and Patricia Wooters of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; one sister, Bonnie Bremer of Fredericksburg, Texas and four grandchildren. She was preceding death by her parents; her husband; one sister, Marguerite Smith and one brother, Herbert Thayer.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Grinnell Regional Medical Center building on experience fund or the Jasper County animal shelter.

      Marguerite Helen (Thayer) Smith, 82, died July 29th, 2002. She was born on July 2nd, 1920 in Storm Lake. After graduating from Storm Lake high school, she married Lawrence N. Smith on October 25th, 1940. Marguerite and her husband operated a radio and television business in Storm Lake for ten years after World War II. They relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, in 1956. Marguerite was active in the Seniors group at the St. Teresa Catholic Church and also in the Sodality and Christ Child association.

She is survived by her husband, Lawrence; sons David, Steven and Randall; sister Elizabeth Snider; stepsister Bonnie Bremmer; grandchildren Brian Smith, Kenneth Smith and Kristi Smith; and great-grandchildren Tanner Smith, Hannah Smith and Jacob Smith. She was preceded and death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Thayer; her brother, Herbert Thayer; and her step brother, John Snyder.

Visitation was held Sunday, August 4th, 2002 at the Whitney and Murphy Arcadia Funeral Home, Phoenix, Arizona. A graveside service was held Monday, August 5th, 2002 at St. Francis Cemetery, Phoenix, Arizona. Thayer and Helen Adeleide Puffett, on 30-Dec-1935 at Newton, Iowa. Ralph A. Snider died on 6-Aug-1983 at Grinnell General Hospital, Grinnell, Poweshieck County, Iowa, at age 67. Ralph was buried at Cremated.
      Ralph A. Snider, 67 of 1338 Reed Street, Grinnell, died Saturday Aug. 6, at the Grinnell General Hospital.
The body was cremated with a private memorial service to be held at the convenience of the family at a later date. A Ralph Snider Memorial fund has been established, and friends may call the Smith funeral home for additional information.
The son of Ralph A. and Narissa Green Snider he was born June 24, 1916 at Oak Park, Illinois. He graduated from Sioux Central high school in 1934 and for a brief time worked at the Civilian Conservation Co-ops.
He was married to Elizabeth Thayer on Dec. 30,1935, at Newton. The couple lived in Washington, D.C. where he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service. During World War II, Mr. Snider served with the 26 infantry in the European, Middle East and African theaters. Following his discharge from the service, he continued to work for the Postal Service, transferring to the Grinnell post office in 1947. He served as carrier clerk retiring in 1975 as assistant postmaster.
Survivors include his wife Betty; two daughters, Virginia E. McKean of Grinnell and Patricia Wooters of Long Lake, Minnesota; four grandchildren; two brothers, Kenneth Snider of Pensacola, Florida and Norman Snider of Muscatine and one sister Lauretta Cashman of Phoenix, Arizona.

Foell died Wednesday, July 17, 1985. He was born April 24, 1894. He was the son of Clara Fultz Foell and Lawrence Foell. His boyhood was spent on a farm in Hayes Township. He attended Storm Lake High School. He married Bernice Thayer February 25th, 1914. Three children were born to this couple. He was a farmer all his life and was always active in Farm Bureau and 4-H. He was a member of the Methodist Church, Jewel Lodge No. 309 and Eastern Star.

He was proceeded in death by his wife, son Harold and his parents. Surviving is his son Kenneth of Storm Lake, one daughter Kathryn Peterson of Spencer, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, one daughter-in-law, one son-in-law, one brother, Vernon of Storm Lake and one sister Caroline Simonson of the Venice, Florida and one sister-in-law, many other relatives and credits.

      Funeral services for Kathryn Marie Peterson, 84, Spencer, formerly of Storm Lake, were held Friday, September 27, at the Warner Chapel in Spencer with Rev. Tonna Parsons officiating. Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery in Spencer.

Kathryn Marie Peterson, the daughter of Carl and Bernice Thayer Foell, was born June 29, 1918, in Storm Lake. She was raised on a farm south of Storm Lake and after graduating from high school, she attended Buena Vista College.

Kathryn was a member of the Delta Phi Beta Sorority and had taught school at Albert City, Rossie and Spencer. On March 19, 1943, she married Bill Peterson in Storm Lake and following their marriage they lived in Spencer their entire married life. Two sons were born to this union, Bill and Roger. Kathryn was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church and was very active in the Eastern Star 116 and the Past Matron Club. On Tuesday, September 24th Mrs. Peterson passed away at the Spencer Hospital.

Kathryn is survived by her husband, Bill of Spencer; her sons: Dr. Bill Peterson and his wife, Patti, of Long Prairie, Minnesota; and Roger Peterson of North Carolina; two grandchildren Stefanie and Bo Peterson of Long Prairie, Minnesota as well as other relatives and friends. She was preceded and death by their parents, and one brother, Harold.

His boyhood was spent on a farm in Hayes Township. He graduated from Storm Lake high school and attended college at Cedar Falls. He was married to Ruth Thayer on June 23, 1915. Three children were born to this couple; Paul, Doris and Robert. Ralph is a farmer in this community all his life. He was always activities church and taught Sunday school for many years. He took part in many community affairs serving as president of the Hayes Consolidated School Board and president of the Buena Vista County Farm Bureau. He was preceded in death by his daughter Doris, son Robert, two brothers, George and Clinton, and two sisters, Mrs. Lottie Shevel and Miss Dell Diehl. Surviving are his wife Ruth, and his son Paul Storm Lake; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; his sister Mrs. Lou Schlieff of Sac City, a daughter-in-law Mrs. Robert Diehl of our city, a son-in-law Ernest Hanover of Vinton and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 11 AM Nov. 5 in Lakeside Presbyterian Church with Dr. Harrison Dawes, pastor of the First United Methodist Church officiating John Dumkreiger was vocalist accompanied by Mrs. Roger Anderson at the organ. Prominent farmer Ralph Diehl 80 Dies suddenly. Sorrowing friends and relatives paid the respects to Ralph Diehl, 80, at the services this Thursday forenoon in the Lakeside Presbyterian Church. Rev. Harrison Dawes, pastor the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in the Storm Lake cemetery. Mr. Diehl a prominent Storm Lake farmer and lifetime area resident passed with suddenly on apparent heart attack in his home about noon Tuesday, Nov. 3 he had been active worker in the Methodist Church and was a member of the Hayes Grange. Survivors are his wife, a son Paul Storm Lake and nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Paul C. Diehl, age 83, a life long Buena Vista county farmer, died Wednesday, March 29,2000 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Omaha following a lengthy illness.
Memorial service will be Saturday, April 1,2000 at 11 a.m. at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Swinton officiating. Grave side service with military honors by Amvets Post #66 will be prior to the funeral at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Storm Lake Cemetery. A Memorial fund has been established. Fratzke Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Paul Carlton Diehl was born May 6, 1916 in Storm Lake, the son of Ralph Carlton and Ruth Lillian (Thayer) Diehl. He graduated from Hayes Consolidated School and attend Buena Vista College and Iowa State University.
On March 1,1941 he married Golda Nielsen at Ponca, NB.
Paul served with the U.S. coast Guard during World War II. He was a life time member of the First United Methodist Church of Storm Lake, a past Lt. Governor of the Kiwanis and a member of Kiwanis Beavers of Storm Lake. He also was a member of Jewel Masonic Lodge #309 and Abu Bekr Shrine of Sioux City.
He was a master gardener and took great joy in sharing the fruits of his labor with others.
His family incudes his wife, Golda, Storm Lake; two sons, Mike and his wife, Linda, Newark Del., and Donald his wife, Mary, Storm Lake; a daughter, Jane Standley and her husband, Don, Longmont, Col; Eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Also surviving are his sister-in-law, Mary Ann Diehl, Albert City, a brother-in-law Ernie Hanover, Vinton; and Numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Doris Hanover and a brother Bob Diehl.

      Flora A. Thayer, 90, died Tuesday Nov.20,2001 at Kavanagh House, Des Moines. She had been a resident of Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny for tow years.
Flora Coston was born Aug.26,1911 in Hot Springs, Ark., the daughter of Minnie and Duff Coston. She married Les Thayer of Storm Lake on Oct.22,1929 in Hot Springs, Ark. They lived in Missouri and Clear Lake before moving to thier farm at Storm Lake in 1941.
In 1973 they moved to Newell and then to Bradention, Fla. in 1978. She moved to Ankeny in 1991 and resided in care centers since 1996.
Flora loved to dance and won many awards with a studio in Bradenton, Fla. She was well known within her circle of friends and relatives for her cooking and family dinners.
Survivors are her children, Les Thayer of Ankney and Janet Laning of Clear Lake; her grandchildren, Ed Thayer Atlanta, GA, Marcia Schmidt, Storm Lake, Kathie Speas, Atlanta,GA, Chris Petrie Milwaukee, Wis., Pam Baier, Des Moines, Paul Laning, Clear Lake, Tom Thayer, Brooklyn, N.Y; A niece, Sister Reed Crawford, Hot Springs, Ark. and 12 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Les Thayer; her sisters, Lillian, Leitha, Faye and Carolyn; a brother, Robert.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the First Methodist Church, 206 SW Walnut St. Ankney, on Saturday Dec.29,2001. Memorial contributions may be made to her church.

      Anna Scrambler, daughter of William and Elizabeth Scrambler, was born Jan. 31, 1886, on a farm east of Alta. She resided with her mother, brothers and sisters. Her father passed away when a small child.

On January 23rd, 1906, she was united in marriage to Arthur Thayer at Alta, Iowa. They always lived in the Alta community. To this union to children were born, Florence and Floyd. She passed away quietly in her sleep in the Alta Hospital April 15th, 1947, at the age of 61 years, three months and 15 days.

She leaves to mourn her death, her husband; a daughter, Mrs. Elmer Stabelfeld, of Aurelia; and a son, Floyd, of Denver, Colorado; one granddaughter, Diane Thayer of Denver CO; and a sister, Grace Crombie of Los Angeles, California. She was preceded by her parents, three brothers and one sister. She was a devoted and loving wife and mother and will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 18th, at 2:00 from her home and 2:30 at the Methodist Church with Rev. L. A. Dale officiating. Miss Minnie Olson accompanied Mr. Murray Jimmerson who sang "In the Garden", "Going Home", and "God Be with You". Pallbearers were Harry Dailey, Henry Steig, D. B. Boyd, Charles Schlief, Fred Schroll, and Ralph Diehl, all of Storm Lake. Burial was made in Woodlawn Cemetery under the direction of the Larson Funeral Home.
