Willis Conover, 75, Voice of America Disc Jockey
By ROBERT McG. THOMAS Jr.
Willis Conover, the Voice of America disc jockey who fought the Cold War with cool music, capturing the hearts and liberating the spirits of millions of listeners trapped behind the Iron Curtain, died on Friday at a hospital in Alexandria, Va. He was 75 and lived in Washington.

Colleagues said the cause was lung cancer.

In the long struggle between the forces of Communism and democracy, Conover, who went on the air in 1955 and who continued broadcasting until a few months ago, proved more effective than a fleet of B-29s.

No wonder. Six nights a week he would rev up the Strayhorn, put Ellington on the wing and take the A Train straight into the Communist heartland.

As the appealing rumble of the familiar theme rolled over the airwaves, from East Berlin to Vladivostok, millions of people would fine-tune their radio dials, knowing what was coming next: a sugary, slow-talking baritone announcing, "This is Willis Conover in Washington, D.C., with the Voice of America Jazz Hour."

For the next two hours Conover would bombard Budapest with Billy Taylor, strafe Poland with Oscar Peterson and drop John Coltrane on Moscow.

To Americans who listened to jazz routinely, or disliked it, the wide popularity of the music in lands where it was officially labeled as decadent might seem incomprehensible.

It was, as Conover liked to say, "the music of freedom," and to those who had no freedom it became such a symbol of hope that at the peak of the cold war it was estimated that Conover had 30 million regular listeners in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union and as many as 100 million worldwide.

He was known as the most famous American that virtually no American had ever heard of. By law the Voice of America broadcasts that made him a household name throughout Europe, Asia and Latin America could not be beamed to the United States.

Conover, a tall, angular man with black-rimmed glasses who combed his jet-black hair straight back, came to his career through a series of accidents.

An Army brat, he was born in Buffalo, N.Y., and attended two dozen schools. Conover was a college freshman in Salisbury, Md., when a guest appearance on a local radio station led to an eight-week job.

Wanting to become a radio announcer, he won an amateur contest that led to a job in Cumberland, Md., where he made the discovery of his life. By chance he heard a recording of Charlie Barnet's "Cherokee" and was so enchanted that he went to a local record store looking for similar music.

The store owner, seeing his selections, said, "You really like that jazz, don't you?" and Conover replied, "What's jazz?"

By the time he was drafted into the Army in 1942 and started hanging out at a USO canteen near the White House, he knew enough to know that the syrupy strings of Andre Kostelanetz, which the society volunteers were playing on the record player, was no music to dance to.

When Conover rummaged through the stack of records and came up with some Dorseys and Arte Shaw, one of the hostesses was so impressed with the clientele's reaction to the music that she introduced Conover to her husband, a radio-station manager. Within a few years Conover was a popular local disc jockey with the only jazz program in the city.

He also arranged concerts and almost offhandedly brought about the desegregation of Washington's nightclubs.

When Duke Ellington made his famous tour of the Soviet Union in 1954 and Voice of America officials decided to start a jazz program, Conover was the natural choice.

There were immediate grumblings in Congress about wasting taxpayers' money by broadcasting frivolous music, but Conover, a scholar who discussed music and interviewed musicians but never mentioned politics, won the day. In 1993 the House of Representatives honored him with a resolution praising the man who had been called one of the country's greatest foreign-policy tools.

An independent-minded man, Conover had his share of run-ins with Voice of America officials over the years but never backed down. As an independent contractor, he had full contractual control over his programming choices, and besides, he had listened to too much jazz to do things any way but his own.

Conover, who was Divorced, is survived by a brother, Walter, and a sister, Elizabeth Davison.

Although few Americans knew the name Willis Conover, his distinctive baritone was the voice of jazz — that quintessentially American music — for millions around the world. From 1955 until 1996, Conover’s Music USA Jazz Hour brought sounds that Louis Armstrong once called “not too slow, not too fast — kind of half-fast” to listeners of the U.S. government-sponsored Voice of America radio service.

Conover educated, inspired and entertained a hugely diverse group of listeners who would gather around shortwave radios in Eastern Europe and beyond, waiting for the words “This is Willis Conover” and the familiar theme of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s “Take the A Train” to break through the static and begin another evening’s episode. During each broadcast, Conover would share a freely flowing and often improvised music that communist governments often condemned as “subversive” and “dangerous.” Some regimes banned jazz altogether, but still Conover secured a global audience.

Conover’s broadcasts worked on many levels. As the host who welcomed new listeners to the music of jazz legends like Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Irving Berlin, John Coltrane and Louis Armstrong — many of whom joined Conover on-air — he was a top-notch interviewer and educator. Yet Conover broadcasts also worked on a deeper level, as the very essence of the music transmitted to audiences behind the Iron Curtain and in other unfree nations the essence of freedom and independence.

MAKING JAZZ INTERNATIONAL

Reader’s Digest once described the broadcaster as “the world’s favorite American,” a title arguably as accurate as it was grand. Conover’s global reach was tremendous. The New York Times reported that his regular audience had been estimated at 30 million listeners in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe and 100 million worldwide.

Jazz musician Duke Ellington prepares to strike up a tune for Louis Armstrong at the Rainbow Grill in New York City on August 26, 1969.

Jazz musician Duke Ellington prepares to strike up a tune for Louis Armstrong at the Rainbow Grill in New York City on August 26, 1969.In the wake of Conover’s death in 1996, fans remembered the broadcaster’s inspiring voice, emphasizing his inspirational reach. “When I was a kid in Poland, Conover’s VOA Jazz Hour was our window into the jazz world,” wrote one listener on a Web-based Usenet group. “I practically owe my jazz interest to Conover. He will be long remembered.” Another stated: “When I was growing up in South Africa in the 1950s, Willis Conover was GOD to me. My interest in jazz was formed by his broadcasts. … There are literally millions of people who are jazz fans today because of him.”

While Conover’s international impact was huge, many Americans still know nothing of him. Jim Boitnott, an American teacher and guitarist, and the president/CEO of Notion Music, only discovered Conover while preparing to teach a music class. “Unfortunately, I learned about Conover later than I should have,” said Boitnott, whose company creates musical notation and performance software. “But like all great people who have stood and fought for change, he can’t help but be inspiring.”

Among jazz enthusiasts within the United States, Conover earned the reputation of an underground hero. Shortly after the broadcaster passed away in 1996, Jim Wilke, host of the Jazz After Hours radio show, wrote that “for those of us who’ve been in jazz radio for more than three or four years, Willis Conover was the guy — the most heard jazz disc jockey in the world. ... As a jazz broadcaster myself, I think the greatest compliment I ever received was from a listener who told me my approach reminded him of Mr. Conover’s. We all owe a debt to one of the most effective ambassadors the music (and the nation) ever had.”

THE MESSAGE OF FREEDOM

Henri Matisse, who produced a famous artist’s book entitled Jazz, called the music “rhythm and meaning.” For Conover, the meaning was his country’s best values. “Jazz is a classical parallel to our American political and social system,” he said. “We agree in advance on the laws and customs we abide by, and having reached agreement, we are free to do whatever we wish within these constraints.”

“It’s the same with jazz. The musicians agree on the key, the harmonic changes, the tempo, and the duration of the piece. Within these guidelines, they are free to play what they want. And when people in other countries hear that quality in the music, it stimulates a need for the same freedom in their lives.”

Much of Conover’s massive, loyal audience endorsed this view. Some commentators even credited him with an essential role in the demise of the Soviet Union. “It was a great message at the right time,” said Boitnott. “He was not the only one expressing these types of ideals during the Cold War, but he did it differently, and that was intriguing. For me, he never came off as lecturing or preaching. He just planted seeds of hope and new ways of thinking.” John Stevenson, Voice of America’s director of central programs division, echoed the sentiment. “His comments were not politicized,” he said during a panel discussion at George Washington University. “He believed that the music alone carried America’s message.”

Conover spread ideas of freedom not just behind the Iron Curtain, but in the United States and in his home city of Washington as well. By organizing racially diverse concerts, Conover aided in the desegregation of Washington’s nightclubs and advanced the cause of civil rights. “I always did find it interesting that he was spreading his message of freedom to foreign countries while championing the music of black Americans who were fighting for the same thing at home,” said Boitnott. “Jazz, in its essence, is freedom. It is so amazing that people around the world felt that inherent identity, even from the sounds of those who themselves were not totally free.”
