Dexter H. Conover, 84, Played Life Like His Piano - Up Tempo

Dexter Henry Conover, court reporter, entrepreneur, pianist and Little League coach, charged at life's challenges like a bull - but he always sported a smile.

He was an active father and husband who enjoyed hiking with his three sons and helped all of them become Eagle Scouts.

"All of our sons turned out great thanks to Dex," said Margie Conover, his wife of 61 years. "He worked with them and they all were wonderful students and each played an instrument."

Mr. Conover himself grew up in a musical family and with his brother, Richard, often played local dance halls during the 1930s. It was during a performance in a Bothell high school that he met Margie.

"He was a hell of a piano player," said his brother, who played trumpet. "I didn't read music; I played by ear, and Dex could transpose any piece of music and make it work."

Mr. Conover died last Tuesday (Aug. 24) of pneumonia. He was 84.

A native of Seattle, he attended Crown Hill Elementary, Richmond Beach High School and the University of Washington.

After college he went to work in the U.S. Patent Office in Washington, D.C., and transferred to the U.S. Customs Service in 1937.

During World War II, he served in the Coast Guard as a court reporter, stationed in Panama.

In 1953, with three partners, he formed Union Paper Box, a paper-carton manufacturer. Afterward, he returned to the Customs Service as a stenographer until he retired in 1979.

Mr. Conover never lost his passion for the piano. He was a lifetime member of the Musicians Union and played as long as he could.

"He had more energy than anyone I've ever met," his wife said. "He loved to dance the jitterbug, play golf and travel."

In 1964, Mr. Conover, his wife and sons traveled the country in a trailer for six weeks.

"He always thought of us first," his wife said. "He wanted us to have a great time."

Also surviving are sons Terry and Forrest, both of Bothell, and Sherman of Seattle; and two grandsons.
