She was the daughter of Hugh (1781-1852) Gilbreath and Hanna CONOVER Gilbreath. They first came to Cole Co. (present day Moniteau Co), MO. Valentine and his father had land transactions in the early 1840's and he also farmed. He, with his brother George Washington, were executors of his fathers estate. In the 1850 Dist 23 Being of Cooper Co. census he was listed as a sawyer and it is believed this was still his occupation when he died. In the 1850 Products of Industry he is listed, circular saw, with a capital investment of $1,400 $900 in Raw material, Horse power, 3 male employees, with an average monthly cost of labor of $45.00 and producing 240,000 ft of lumber per year.

In "A History of Cooper County Missouri 1804-1876" by Levens & Drake it gives Palestine, MO as his place of death and burial which is a township in Cooper Co., MO and there were also two towns by that name Old palestine and New Palestine. There are several cemeteries in the area and also some cemeteries that are gone, but no idea if he was buried in one of them. Dicy remarried Hardin Ellison in 1858 but is listed in the 1860 Moniteau Township of Cooper Co., MO cenus as Dicy Odineal, as a farmer with $300 in personal Estate. She died Sept. 6, 1862 near Prairie Home, MO and is buried in Harris Cemetery near Prairie Home, Cooper Co., MO.

Thomas B. Odneal was born on 15-Apr-1840 at Cooper County, Missouri. He was the son of Valentine S. Odneal and Dicey Gilbreath. Thomas B. Odneal died in 1873 at Texas.

Thomas B., was born about 1840. He served in the Civil War from June 1863 until the end. He was in Co. J 9th Regiment of the State Militia Cavalry (UNION). According to the military record he enrolled June 27, 1863 at Boonville, MO. He was mustered in at Mexico, MO for three years, his age was given as 25. He was mustered out at Benton Barracks. MO July 13, 1865. It states he was last paid to date on Feb. 28, 1865. At the bottom of his service record there was a Book mark APZ 402 1867. The records of Co J 9th Reg. had only two enteries July-Aug. and Sept.-Oct. 1864. Both records were the same "The company has been on numerous skirmishes and on the march almost constantly. All records of Co. J 9th Reg. indicate he spent his time around Fayette, Macon and Mexico, MO." He is the only known descendant of William B. to serve on the Union side, however, the three sons of George M. all served with the Union Army and it is possible John Washington was in the Union Army. It would be interesting to have more information about this.

It it believed he never married and died in Texas between 1873 and 1878. However a story by Jack Odneal tells of two brothers, John Wash. and another going to Texas, one stayed (John Washington), and the other went on to California.

George Conover Odneal was born on 22-Sep-1846 at Moniteau County, Missouri. He was the son of Valentine S. Odneal and Dicey Gilbreath. George married Martha Jane Harris, daughter of William Harris and Nancy Martin, on 30-Sep-1875. George Conover Odneal died on 4-Apr-1924 at North Moniteau Twp., Cooper County, Missouri, at age 77. George was buried at Harris Cemetery near, Prairie Home, Cooper County, Missouri.

George Conover Odneal was born Sept 22, 1846 in Moniteau Co., MO. I believe he went by Conover. He attended the Felder public school and Prairie Home College.
Although George was not yet 15 years old when the Civil War began, according to Confederate records, he was in the army from 1861 until the end. He was a private in Co. D of Shelby's Army serving in Missouri, Arkansas and Texas. Their is a good chance that he and his cousin William Jefferson were at the battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas in December of 1862. It is likely George and William Jefferson knew the James Brothers and the Youngers before they became outlaws as they were a part of Quantrails Guerrilas, a support group for Shelby's Army. He appears on a prisoner of War roll for Company's C, D & E of 9th Elliotts Regiment Missouri Volunteer Calavery. Confererate States Army, Commanded by Capt. Davenport surrendered at New Orleans, LA by Gen. E. K. Smith, C. S. A. to Maj. Gen. E. R. S. Canby U S Army, May 26, 1865 & paroled at Shreveport, LA June 14, 1865. Residence given as Cooper Co., MO. Conover had some narrow escapes, was severely wounded, and carried a piece of shell in his side for many years after the war before having it removed.
After the Civil War he spent all his life in Cooper Co., North Moniteau Township, MO engaged in farming and stock raising. On Sept. 30, 1875 Conover married Martha Jane Harris. They had four children; John Porter died at age ten, the other children, Nora Alice, Flara Mae, and Thomas Aubra all married and had families. Conover's farm was located on the corner of what is now Hwy WW and Felder Rd. Conover died April 15, 1924 and Martha died Jan. 25, 1932, they are both buried in Harris Cemetery, located 2.5 miles South West of Prairie Home, MO on Hwy W.

Mrs. Mary Alice Odneal, widow of the late John W. Mr. Bond acquired, and for many years farmed lands on which much of the business part of Sherman is built.

Albert Samuel Moody was born between 1829 and 1830 at Sumner County, Tennessee. He was the son of Rev. Spencer Moody and Susannah Hendricks. Albert married Nancy Jane Mathews, daughter of Catherine (Unknown), on 8-Jun-1852. Albert was buried at Neosho County, Kansas.
Everyone thinks they were buried at Bethel Cemetery in Neosho County. (I am sure I found their stones there in 1945 but have been unable to find them lately. It is possible that their stones were shattered by the tornado which hit the cemetery in 1947 that they could not put together again.) I believe all their children were born in Hancock County, Illinois. In Rebecca Jane (Moody) Sherrill’s obituary I found what Albert and Nancy came to Kansas in 1859 but were so disappointed in the prospect that they returned again to Illinois. Eight years later, after other members of the family migrated to Neosho County, they, too, came to Osage Mission (St. Paul). Their claim, near where the little village of Brent used to be, was in Section 23 of the Walnut Grove Township. This is about 4 miles north of St. Paul. Albert Moody was lame. He suffered a bad siege of Erysipelas (this is a severe streptococci infection) which settled in one leg. This may be one reason why he did not serve in the Civil War. It also hampered his farm work. Albert and Nancy reared two grandchildren, Stella and Albert Shoemaker, whose mother died.

Captain John T. Hendricks
"The final moment came, the weary wheels of life stood still, and a long and beautiful life was peacefully ended.

Capt. John T. Hendricks (we love to call him Uncle John)

was born in North Carolina 26 Aug. 1793; emigrated to Kentucky in 1802, and died in his ninety-fifth year, 19 Apr. 1888. "Like a shock of corn in his season, he came to his grain in full age, honored and revered by all whose pleasure it was to know him.

Though his end was anticipated, yet a gloom pervades the community in which he lived; by none is he missed so sadly as by his worthy help-meet, who walked with him seventy years through this earthly vale, the idol of his heart. His comforter in every time of trouble (besides his Maker and Redeemer) his all, and in all God bless Aunt Tabitha Hendricks. May this dispensation of providence work out for her a far more exceding and eternal weight of glory, whereby she may meet him in realms of bliss when the trials of earth are over. May all those who were near to him by the ties of consanguinity, be reconciled to his departure, for

to depart and be with Christ is far better. Stand fast therefore children, with one mind and heart, striving together for the faith of the Gospel promises.
It would seem to be a matter of supererogation to say anything commendatory of this old departed patriarch since he was so well and favorably known. First of all when a young man,
he obeyed the mandates of the scriptures, to-wit. Made his bread by the sweat of his brow; he was a wagon maker by trade. His timbers were always seasoned, as those who patronized him can testify. He was a patriot, and demonstrated his love for the fair name of his country by offering his services in her defense at the battle of New Orleans. Returning home from that sanguinary conflict, he determined that it was not good that man should be alone, and so he chose for a wife the fair Miss Tabitha Dorris, daughter of William Dorris, living at Hamilton Station, an Indian Fort near Tyree Springs, Tenn.

He then planted a tree, built a house and reared up sons and daughters; five daughters to be a comfort to him in his declining years. Under the shade of this same tree he ever afterwards lived in peace and harmony for seventy years and like the old patriarch, Jacob, "gathered up his feet into his bed and yielded up the ghost." on 20-Apr-1888.

Emigrated to Kentucky in 1802 and was a wagon maker by trade. He served his country in the Battle of New Orleans during the war of 1812. His wife Tabitha Dorris had two sisters that married his cousins, Samuel (D1103) and James (D1110) Hendricks.

John Hendrickson was born circa 1782 at Possibly, Allegany County, Maryland. He was the son of William Hendricks and Charlotte Hinkle. John married Margaret Burroughs, daughter of Abner Burroughs and Eunice Reed. John was buried at Possibly, Vancouver, Clark County, Washington.

Perhaps named for his paternal uncle, John was probably born in Allegany Co. In about 1814 when William Greenlee (father of John's brother, George's wife, Nancy Greenlee) bought land in Lake (now Washington Twp.), Holmes Co., Ohio the only families living there were those of J. L. Priest, Samuel Marvin, William Hendrickson, Elijah Bolling and John Hendrickson.

John was drafted for service in the War of 1812 but became ill and his brother George substituted for him. John applied for bounty land in Oregon Territory, on 10 Sep 1855 at age 74. His petition was denied on the grounds that his name was not recorded. However, his brother's bounty application in Iowa proved the service.

He owned various pieces of property in Ohio before moving to Muscatine Co, Iowa by the 1840 census, where his household was recored as consisting of 1 male 50 and over, (John), 1 male 10-15 (Lemuel), and females as follows: 1 50-60 (Margaret), 2 15-20 (unknown). Older children had married in Ohio.

John seems not to have taken a Donation Land Claim in his own name but lived on the Swan Island claim which was in the name of his young son Lemuel. The Donation Claim was No. 1018 Swan Island, Oregon. The arrival date in Oregon Territory was 20 Nov 1848. Lemuel lived in an old boat on the Swan Island property.

John and Margaret both died in 1860 or later in Washington State. Both possibly are buried in the Vancouver cemetery.

Current information indicates that William's headstone has been broken off and stuck in the soil, that the birthdate was not legible and that the grave was marked with a flag. Mary Ann's headstone was also broken off and the dates buried in soil. All that could be deciphered was 'Mary Ann, wife of William Hendrickson, died ______ (unreadable). The birth order of William and Mary Ann's children is uncertain.

George H. Hendrickson was born circa 1794 at Allegany County, Maryland. He was the son of William Hendricks and Charlotte Hinkle. George married Nancy Greenlee between 1816 and 1817. George H. Hendrickson died at Iowa.
George's brother, John, was drafted for the War of 1812 at Wooster, Iowa. When John became ill, George served out John's time. George stated this in his application for bounty land. George was 18 when he went into the service, his tour of duty lasting until the end of the war. He served in the 2nd Regiment (Cotsgreaves) Ohio Militia, under Captain Delanne Mills. On 3 May 1851 George applied for bounty land in Washington Co., Iowa. At that time he gave his age as 56. The transaction was held up because he had omitted to sign his middle initial. On 3 May 1855 he said he could not return the application because he had disposed of it and that he was making application for land under a later release. Information regarding the children of George and Nancy is sketchy. In the 1820 census for Wayne Co., Iowa two unknown girls under 10 are listed. In 1840 three girls are listed, Nancy, 1 older and 1 younger than their daughter Nancy who was 20 in the 1850 census. On 10 Nov 1842, George A. Stott and wife, Matilda, of Richland Co., Ohio, deeded land in Iowa to George H. Hendrickson 'late of Richland Co.' (This means he recently left the county, not that he died.). George Hendrickson, according to early Washington Co. Iowa court records served on a jury in the trial of Job Peck on murder charges. The jury was out two days and rendered a verdict of not guilty. This was the story: Peck married the girl he loved on 6 Sep 1843. Her 'father' ('no one thought he was her father') objected and forced her to leave her bridegroom. That night the 'father' was mysteriously murdered in his cabin and Job Peck was accused.

A letter written by Rebecca to her brother John Hendrix in 1838 is of interest. The owner of the letter, John David Hendrix of Naples, Florida, writes: 'This letter has been translated as best we are able, however it is incomplete. The writing is very difficult to read and the spelling in the original is very phonetic. in this translation we have taken the liberty of contemporizing spelling and punctuation.'

The letter reads:
Kentucky, Simpson County, January 22nd, 1838.

Dear loving brother and sister. I take this opportunity of writing to you to let you know that we are all enjoying moderate health at present, thanks be to God for his mercy bestowed on us. Hoping these few lines will find you all well. I received your letter the twelfth of January which gave us much satisfaction. I have nothing strange to write but I can tell you I have sold your land to Benjamin Trible on a credit of three years. He lifted your note that you gave to your Father for eighty dollars and he is to pay me twenty dollars 25 of December next, and one hundred the 25 of the next December, and one hundred and fifty the 25 of the next December and he is bound it in silver and I want you not to fail to come and make a right to the land, or authorize me to make the right, for I am bound for it and as life is very uncertain and death certain, and if you were to be called away before the expiration of the term, the difficulty I might be placed in--let us talk about something else. I have moved over and we are well satisfied with our Country. I think we have corn and meat enough to do us. I can tell you that old Mr. Clark is dead and Ruben Harris's wife is dead also. I can also tell you that Pleasant Mays and all his family have come back well and have bought Steven Pedin's place and are well satisfied to live in this Country. There has been none joined our Church since you left here, only Pleasant and Cerina returned the letter. Samuel Ginbless and Nancy Perdew is both excluded. We have pleasing meeting, for the Lord by his spirit and grace has caused ... is ... and his children is made to rejoice. William Conswell's daughter has ... a ... of better things and two of Mr. Northum's daughters and numbers of others. I have heard of as many as fifty being baptized at one time. Tho there is destiny in almost everything, the old Baptist is opposed by many. Yet the Lord has promised to be with his people all way. Let Jesse Canard see this letter, dear brother and sister, it might fan the faith once delivered to the Saviour. I have many things to say to you both, but opportunity don't admit of my saying much more on this subject at this time. Talk we a little about something else. Your Father and Mother is both well and sends their love and well wishes to you and to your wife and children and to Jesse Canard and family and to his brother, Abraham Hendricks and family, and to all ... friends. Your mother is enjoying moderate health. John Hinton and his family is well. (Next, Rebecca sends messages from her children to John's children, their cousins:). Elizabeth hinton to Saritha Hendricks: How do you do in the big barrens? have you seen any Indians yet though I suppose you stopped before you got where they was. I can tell you that I have got well and hearty and am heavier than I ever was. Guess how much--one hundred and thirty. Jesse Hinton to Reubin Hendricks: how are you comong in them old fields? Have you ketched any fish out hunting strawberries yet? Nancy and Mary Hinton wishes to be remembered to Margaret and Nancy Hendricks. John, wite and tell us all about it. We want to know how you come on in the world and above all how you come on in matters of the spirit. We send our love and well wishes to Jesse Canard and family and to Uncle Abraham Hendricks and family, cousin Abraham and family and to Joseph McGraw and family and to Jacob Gibson and family and to all enquiring friends. So no more, but remain your brother and sister til death. Samuel and Rebecah Hinton.

May all those who were near to him by the ties of consanguinity, be reconciled to his departure, for to depart and be with Christ is far better.

Returning home from that sanguinary conflict, he determined that it was not good that man should be alone, and so he chose for a wife the fair Miss Tabitha Dorris, daughter of William Dorris, living at Hamilton Station, an
Indian Fort near Tyree Springs, Tenn.

He then planted a tree, built a house and reared up sons and daughters; five daughters to be a comfort to him in his declining years. Under the shade of this same tree he ever afterwards lived in peace and harmony for seventy years and like the old patriarch, Jacob, "gathered up his feet into his bed and yielded up the ghost."
