Martin Reno, of Shenango township, died Thursday morning at 8 o'clock. He attended the local election on Tuesday, February 17th, and took a slight cold that quickly developed into a violent attack of pneumonia. The strong physique that had borne the burden of 72 years was unable to resist the disease. Wednesday night it was realized that the end was near and the following morning he died.
Mr. Reno's long life has been passed in the vicinity of New Castle. Almost 50 years ago he married Miss Hannah Iddings. The old people talked recently of their half century of married life and were planning to celebrate their golden wedding. These conversations are now remembered with sadness.
The deceased was a man of wonderful physical and mental energy, and his massive frame was accompanied by a wonderful largeness of heart that endeared him to all. In connection with his many personal interest he always had time to devote to public and religious duties and was ever active in the affairs of his county and township. He was a deacon of the First Baptist church, of this city and for many years treasurer of the Baptist Association. In the erection of the beautiful new building now used by the congregation, he was the largest contributor and his perseverance added to the success of the work.
At the time of the dedication Mr. and Mrs. Reno entertained the congregation at the church with a sumptuous feast. A marked characteristic of his life was that he always accomplished whatever he undertook, and in this the determination of his true hearted wife was his support.
Some years ago Mr. Reno gave to each of his sons, $4,000, but the family estate is large. The heirs are Lafayette and Samuel P. Reno, of Shenango township, Joseph Reno, of Edinboro, Pa., and his daughter Josephine, now the wife of Prof. Charles Swift of Erie county.
The funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Henry Madtes, of this city. Services will be held at the house at 10 o'clock Sunday morning and the remains taken to the Harmony Baptist church, where further ceremonies will be observed and the interment will take place.
He lived in days when entertainment and recreation was scarce and tough. Wrestling with no holds barred was a favorite. Han and another were hard at it when hw was in danger of losing an eye, so he bit the man's thumb off. The neighbor took it to court which was against the rules and Gr-grandfather was incensed over it. When the judge awarded the neighbor $5.00 to be baid then and there, gr-grandfather rolled off two bills, the judge said "no, Mr. Reno, I said $5.00", and gr-grandfather said, "that's for the other one, and I'll get it when I can."

I leave and bequeath my whole estate both real and personal in the hands of my beloved wife Jean Reno for the use of maintaining and raising my children and giving them regular education; this whole power invested in her during her widowhood investing and defending in my two step children John Savers and Liddie Savers their is a certain estate from their father many hands coming which I leave to their choice when they come to lawful age to have that and no more; or other ways to have an equal part of my whole estate both real and personal with the rest of my children if they shall make choice to have an equal part with the rest of my children when they come to lawful age then they shall give good and lawful recipts for their whole estates which is my hands coming to them from their father and when my children shall be grown up inclining to take their estate in their own hand to be their part to be appraised to them as she shall give it to them and at my wifes marriage or decease then my children is to have my whole estate equally divided among them allowing such just accounts and due credits being given by the Executor so that one shall not receive one penny more than another, to them their heirs and assigns forever. John Reno was born on 13-Apr-1715 at Stafford County, Virgina. He was born on 13-Apr-1715 at Manassas, Prince William County, Virgina; Now Prince William County. He was the son of Lewis de Reynaud and Anne (Unknown). John married Susannah Thorn, daughter of William Thorn and Mary Peck, on 7-Nov-1737. John married Susannah Thorn, daughter of William Thorn and Mary Peck, on 17-Nov-1737 at Virgina. John Reno died on 21-Aug-1771 at age 56. He died in 1790. He died in 1806 at Washington County, Tennessee. He died on 14-Jun-1806 at Elizabethton, Carter County, Tennessee, at age 91.
Family bible, as described in letter from I. A. Reneau (appendix in Guy Reno 1972) has name spelled as Reneau.
Born on the Patent of 1710 obtained by Lewis Reno from Clermont Chevalle, at the confluence of the Occoquain River with Broad Run in Prince William Co., VA. Was living there when Faquier Co. was formed out of Prince William Co. in 1749. Records of him living in Frederick Co. (NJ) in 1758 and 1760. (Reno Family Tree by Marshall H. Reno). On Mar. 5, 1764, he and wife Susannah "of Frederick County" sold land in Prince William Co. to William French, except 1/2 acre for the graveyard described as land left him by his father Lewis Reno (Prince William Co. Deed Book Q, pp. 147, 165). In 1764, John Reneau also transferred 600 acres on Patterson's Creek, Hampshire Co., VA with other transfers listed in 1769, 1770, and 1771.
Between 1784 and 1787, John Reno and nine of his children moved to Washington Co., which later became Carter Co., TN, and where he died. Family is described in detail in manuscripts on Reno family by Guy Reno and Sherman Reno.
The following was contributed by Daniel Seelye, [email protected]: JOHN RENO/RENEAU, removed to Tennessee Country with a number of his children and, during the State of Franklin controversy there between Colonel JOHN TIPTON and Colonel JOHN SEVIER, we find the following: "I hereby give public notice that there will be an election held the 3rd Friday in August next at JOHN RENNOE's near Sickamore Sholes where Charles Robertson formerly lived to choose members to represent Washington County in General Assembly of North Carolina...'." Colonel Tipton was, by his oath as representative of the North Carolina law in the Washington District of North Carolina, opposed to the treasonable act of establishing the State of Franklin which was being organized under Colonel, later General, John Sevier. As JOHN RENO had both Sevier and Tipton daughter- in-laws and this conflict had broken out into an armed one, John's situation must have been acute. However, as we see by the advertisement dated July 19,
1786, quoted above from Ramsey's "Annals of Tennessee", page 338, JOHN RENO must have sided with Colonel John Tipton, whose sister (or niece) was married to Reno's son Charles. "Sicamore Scholes" was on the Watauga River, near the site where the first cabin built by white men in Tennessee Country was erected in 1768. From 1787, John and Charles Reno/Reneau are found in the tax lists for Washington County, Tennessee (North Carolina). (East Tennessee Genealogical Magazine, Vols. 34, p. 126, and 35, p. 108, et seq.)
On 14 June 1806, John Reno made his will, witnessed by JOHN DUNLAP, WILLIAM LACEY, and SAMUEL TIPTON (son of Colonel John Tipton and husband of Susannah Reneau, daughter of the Reverend William Reneau, see above). Pierre de Reynaud was born circa 1640 at Paris, France. He was the son of Gen. Louis de Reynaud and Frances D'Hamel de Douvrin. Pierre de Reynaud was born circa 1654 at France. Pierre married Sarah Regnaut, daughter of Jean Regnaut and Ester du Rex du Pont, circa 1675 at Plsce Les Clouseau in Bleis, Paris, France. Pierre de Reynaud died on 12-Sep-1718 at Dublin, Dublin, Ireland. He died on 10-May-1744 at France.
The Reneaus/Renos were French Hugenots who fled from the persecutions of the Roman Catholic Church after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes by King
Louis XIV of France, in 1685. We do not know exactly the section of France where the Reneaus lived prior to their emigration to England, but there is some evidence that the family of the Reneau emigre had lived in Paris at some time before they escaped from France. The name is found in early records spelled Renaud, Reynoud, Renoe, Renno, etc.
He was also known as Peter Raynaud. He was also known as Peter de Reynaud. He was also known as Pierre Raynaud. On between 1685 and 1687 Pobably went to England with his brothers Louis and Benjamin. His wife Sarah and their children probably joined him in the spring of 1688, having left France by the normal channels which required emmigrants to abjure Protestantism and take mass as Catholics.
