John Pierce was born in 1601 at Woodbury, Devonshire, England. He was the son of Richard Pierce and (Unknown) (Unknown). John married Elizabeth Goodridge on 29-Mar-1624 at Berry Pomroy, Devonshire, England. John Pierce died on 19-Aug-1661 at Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.

      Elizabeth Goodridge was born on 6-Apr-1600 at Swineshead, London, Middlesex, England. Elizabeth married John Pierce, son of Richard Pierce and (Unknown) (Unknown), on 29-Mar-1624 at Berry Pomroy, Devonshire, England. Elizabeth Goodridge died circa 1650.

     John Phillips was baptized on 25-Mar-1602 at Theekingham (cum Stow Green), London, Middlesex, England. He was the son of Christopher Phillips and Agnes Abram. John married Mary Street, daughter of Thomas Street and Mercy Freebody, on 24-Aug-1620 at Shermanbury, Sussex, England. John married Mary Ruth Gerrard, daughter of Richard Gerrard and Elizabeth Dutton, circa 1630 at Marshfield, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. John Phillips died on 16-Dec-1682 at Marshfield, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, at age 80.
     He and Mary Street immigrated in 1630; in the Winthrop Fleet. John, his wife and two children Mary and John. John, his wife, and two children (Mary and John), arrived in New England aboard one of the eleven ships of the Winthrop Fleet in 1630. They do not seem to have been aboard the same ship as Rev. George Phillips. Son Michael's name is not immediately apparent on this list.

John became solvent and successful, and active in the legal and social life of the community. Here is a portion of a document, courtesy the Mayflower web site...

[From unrecorded bond] On 13 July, 1714, "Samuel Kinsley" of Taunton North Purchase, "Eldest son of mr Samuel Kingley of sd North Purchase", as administrator, gave bond for £500, with John Phillips and Benjamin Drake, both of Taunton North Purchase, as sureties.
The witnesses were Thomas Fenton and John Cary.

From original warrant] On 6 March, 1721/2, "mr]Epharaim Randall mr John Phillips mr Benjamin Drake mr Thomas manley & mr Clementt Briggs" .... "All sufficient freeholders within the County of Bristoll or any three of you" were appointed "to make a Divission on ye Houseing and Lands of mr Samuell Kingsley of Taunton North Purchass Deceased Intestate and also of his Personall Estate .... amongst the Widdow and childreen and shuch as shall Legally represent them if any of them be Dead". "The gentleman Above Named" Were Sworn the same day. [Also recorded, 4: 141]

John's son John married third Ann Hatch, a granddaughter of Thomas Tilden, a passenger on the ship 'Anne', 1623, a sister ship of the Mayflower.

John became a part of a legal proceeding against fellow colonist James Latham...

     Mary Street was baptized on 8-Jun-1607 at Saint Clements, Hastings, Sussex, England. She was the daughter of Thomas Street and Mercy Freebody. Mary married John Phillips, son of Christopher Phillips and Agnes Abram, on 24-Aug-1620 at Shermanbury, Sussex, England. Mary Street died in Mar-1630/31 at Marshfield, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, at age 23.
     She and John Phillips immigrated in 1630; in the Winthrop Fleet. John, his wife and two children Mary and John.

     Thomas married Mercy Freebody.

     Mercy married Thomas Street.

     John Phillips was baptized on 4-Aug-1622 at Arlington, Sussex, England. He was the son of John Phillips and Mary Street. John married Faith Clark circa 1639 at Plymouth County, Massachusetts. John married Grace Holloway, daughter of John Holloway and Amy Dyer, on 6-Jul-1641 at Marshfield, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. John married Ann Hatch, daughter of Elder William Hatch and Jane Ann Tilden, on 3-Apr-1677 at Marshfield, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. John Phillips died in Oct-1691 at Marshfield, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, at age 69.
      John's third wife, Ann Hatch, is a granddaughter of Thomas Tilden, a passenger on the ship 'Anne', 1623, a sister ship of the Mayflower.

John's second wife, Faith Clark, is the widow of Edward Doty, Mayflower passenger.

Edward Doty died at Plymouth on Thursday, 23 August 1655, and his widow, Faith (Clark) Doty, married second, at Plymouth, on Thursday, 14 March, 1666/7, John Phillips of Marshfield. Faith Phillips was buried at Marshfield on Tuesday, 21December, 1675. She had disposed of the house and land at High Cliff, Plymouth, bequeathed her in Edward Doty's will, by a deed of gift to her son John Doty..

     Grace Holloway was baptized on 9-Jun-1616 at South Molton, Devon, England. She was the daughter of John Holloway and Amy Dyer. Grace married John Phillips, son of John Phillips and Mary Street, on 6-Jul-1641 at Marshfield, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. Grace Holloway died on 23-Jun-1666 at Marshfield, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, at age 50.

     John married Amy Dyer.

     Amy married John Holloway.

     Faith married William Doty. Faith married John Phillips, son of John Phillips and Mary Street, circa 1639 at Plymouth County, Massachusetts. Faith Clark died on 21-Dec-1675 at Marshfield, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.

     William married Faith Clark.

     William married Jane Ann Tilden.

     Jane married Elder William Hatch.

      Mary Phillips was born on 2-Apr-1626 at Petworth, Sussex, England. She was the daughter of John Phillips and Mary Street. Mary married Samuel Gallup, son of John Gallup and Chistobel Bruchette, on 20-Nov-1650 at Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.

      Samuel Gallup was born in 1616 at Mosterne, Dorset, England. He was the son of John Gallup and Chistobel Bruchette. Samuel married Mary Phillips, daughter of John Phillips and Mary Street, on 20-Nov-1650 at Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.

     John married Chistobel Bruchette.

     Chistobel married John Gallup.

      Mary Ruth Gerrard was born on 11-Jan-1606/7 at Frodsham, Cheshire, England. She was the daughter of Richard Gerrard and Elizabeth Dutton. Mary married David Lloyd circa 1623 at Cheshire, England. Mary married John Phillips, son of Christopher Phillips and Agnes Abram, circa 1630 at Marshfield, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. Mary Ruth Gerrard died on 18-Mar-1690/91 at Massachusetts at age 84.

     Richard married Elizabeth Dutton.

     Elizabeth married Richard Gerrard.

      David Lloyd was born circa 1595 at Cheshire, England. David married Mary Ruth Gerrard, daughter of Richard Gerrard and Elizabeth Dutton, circa 1623 at Cheshire, England. David Lloyd died circa 1630 at Massachusetts.

      Henry Phillips was born on 19-Jan-1630/31 at Dedham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. He was the son of John Phillips and Mary Ruth Gerrard. Henry married Mary Dwight, daughter of John Dwight and Abigail Mann, on 24-Jun-1653 at Dedham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. Henry Phillips died on 17-Apr-1701 at age 70.

      Mary Dwight was born on 25-Jul-1634 at Dedham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of John Dwight and Abigail Mann. Mary married Henry Phillips, son of John Phillips and Mary Ruth Gerrard, on 24-Jun-1653 at Dedham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. Mary Dwight died on 3-Feb-1685/86 at age 51.

     John married Abigail Mann.

     Abigail married John Dwight.

      Christopher Phillips was born on 17-Jun-1565 at Teignhead, Devon, England. He was the son of John Phillips and Johann Watters. Christopher married Agnes Abram, daughter of Thomas Abram and Rachel Foote, on 26-Oct-1587 at Chichester, Sussex, England. Christopher Phillips died on 3-Feb-1620/21 at West Rainham, St. Martins, Norfolk, England, at age 55.
      Christopher Phillips was born about two years after William Shakespeare and died about two years before Shakespeare. Christopher and Shakespeare were born during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, last of the Tudor monarchs. There is no relationship between Christopher and these two individuals; the detail is included for historical reference only. The Elizabethan Era in England produced much of value and beauty. Handel composed his music; Newton discovered gravity; Sir Francis Drake destroyed the much more powerful Spanish fleet; William Shakespeare wrote his plays; and on it goes.

The family of Christopher Phillips is steeped in the lore of the founding of America. His son Thomas is found on the list of people who were to sail on the Mayflower in 1620. Thomas, for some reason, did not make the journey, and stayed the rest of his life in England. Two other sons, John and George, made the passage 10 years after the Mayflower, on ships of the Winthrop Fleet. Son William came to America, apparently not on the Winthrop ships, but by some other similar means, and raised his family, and died, in New England.

The Phillips name appears throughout the records and chronicles of early America.

Several of Christopher's descendants married direct descendants of Mayflower passengers, as noted as you work through this tree. At least one married a descendant of the namesake of the Winthrop Fleet, the first Governor of Massachusetts, John Winthrop.

While descendants and cousins of Christopher Phillips eventually spread throughout America, and can be found fighting in the Revolutionary War on the side of the new Republic, and others distinguishing themselves in the Civil War, a remarkable number maintained their original values, and remained loyal to England and their king. In this role, they undertook military and other roles, and were subjected to the mass expulsions of Loyalists which occurred when the new republic defeated England. With just a few possessions, they headed with their friends and cousins for Canada, where barren wilderness and hardship awaited them. Several family members were born during the actual days of exodus. One, John Phillips, was born on a ship, a private vessel accompanying the Apollo, captained by his father in 1783, in a hasty exit made from New York to Nova Scotia.

As they made their exits, they paused along the way, thinking that they had reached safe haven. No one could know what the final borders would be. The strong and unbending pressures placed upon them by the Continental Army, noted several times in documents as you work through this family tree, made their lives miserable. Some family lines paused in Pennsylvania and others in upper New York State. But this was not sufficient. They had to eventually cross the lines of what became the modern borders of Canada. Once in Canada, they had to start over, pulling out the pioneering spirit and determination which had led them to America from England 150 years earlier.

Phillips on both sides of the Canada/US border gave their lives in World War I and World War II.

This family tree is mainly aimed at uncovering the roots and values of the Loyalist Phillips who carried with them their principles and pioneering spirit. I have the musket owned by my great great grandfather, George Rex Phillips (born 1812). A look at it reminds me of what he stood for, and of what the Phillips quest has brought to North America.

      Rachel Foote was born circa 1542. Rachel married Agnes Abram, daughter of Thomas Abram and Rachel Foote.
