Most communities had a one and two room school. Many times, the same building that was used for the school during the week was used for the church when the circuit preacher made his rounds. One teacher would teach several grades at one time. She would work with one group of students while one of her older students, usually a girl, would work with a group of the younger students. Classes were usually held during the times of the year when the family farms were not bringing in a crop. Because times were hard and every hand was needed to help around the farm, children would only attend till they were old enough to work on major chores on the farm. That is why many of the mountain folks would do good to have a 6 grade education.
