The Heritage of the Early Industry Earning a living in Western North Carolina. |
||
When the pioneers arrived in the mountains of Western North Carolina they traveled along the mountain paths and trails that the Indians had been using. Because these trails were through forested areas, normal sized wagons couldn't be used to transport the families possessions. Many times the early pioneers would walk or ride a horse to visit their neighbors or to travel to town for supplies. Eventually these trails were widened and used as the basis of the roads and highways.
As the timber industry developed, the railway extended their lines into the mountains. With the new rail lines, passengers and supplies could also be brought in more easily.
