Police Court - Assault

John De Caen De la Mare (25) was charged by Centenier C Cuming, of St Helier, with having on Saturday, the 4th inst. about 11:30pm, while in a state of intemperance, committed an assault without provation on the person of John Henry aged 14, by giving him a blow with his fist on the body, and knocking him off his bicycle and this in old St Johns Road.

The centenier said that PC Denis reported to him that he saw the accused about 11:15pm on Saturday in St Johns Road very drunk. He saw him knock the lad of his bicycle.

PC Denis said he saw the accused on Saturday night in St johns Road. He was intoxicated and assaulted the lad John Henry who was on his bicycle. Witness took the accused to the Station.

John Henry said the accused stopped him about 11:15pm in St Johns road as he was going home. He knocked him off his bicycle.

The Judge, addressing the accused, said he had acted in a brutal and cowardly manner. As this was his first appearance he would be dealt with leniently. He would have to pay a fine of £1 or go to goal for 7 days.

The fine was paid. ³
