Probably no more outstanding illustration of justifiction of
faith in the progress and
growth of Morningside can be given than a record of the advance
in the business of O. B. McDonald, Buick dealer. Starting
in March, 1916, with his business establishment housed in a shack
barely large enough to shelter one automobile, Mr. McDonald has
today one of the largest and most modern automobile agencies in
the city. The main show room and garage now occupies three-fourths
of the main floor in the magnificent new Masonic Temple in Morningside,
and in addition it is necessary to utilize another building, at
4008 Morningside avenue, wherein is maintained a warehouse for
accessories and supplies. Mr. McDonald's Buick repairs and accessories
is kept on hand at all times, this popular car throughout the
city. A full line of all Buick repairs and accessories is kept
on hand at all times, and with a force of expert mechanics constantly
available to the public, assuring prompt and satisfactory service,
the steady advance in sales and service volume is easily explained.
Four mechanics are employed in this branch of the business, Mr.
McDonald supervising the repair and accessory departments and
attending personally to the sales department. The main building
and show rooms are situated at 4118-20-22 Morningside avenue.

The
Morningside Furnace Co., which was started on January 1, 1920,
has had it steady growth and at the present time ranks as one
of the progressive business institutions of that suburb. It was
organized by Roy H. Nelson, who is at the head of the concern,
which does all kinds of sheet metal work and installs the well
known Healthy Humid Heat Premier Furnace. This furnace, which
is rapidly growing in favor because of its superior heating qualities,
delivers 75 per cent more heat than its capacity specifies, delivering
the heat to the rooms where it is needed instead of to the basement,
assuring a full and even heat whenever it is desired.

The Morningside Elevator and Coal Co. was organized in December,
1915, by C. J. Milligan, who was one of the pioneer business
men of this section of the country. Associated with him in this
business are B. A. Adams and C. W. Forney. They
employ six men and do an annual business in excess of $100,000.
They operate a retail wholesale coal yard, wholesale and retail
hay and feed business,
and operate an elevator. They also sell all kinds of grain, building
material and petroleum products. This latter is through their
garage and filling station. The filling station has been completely
remodeled and is one of the finest in the city. It is known as
the Denison Highway Filling Station and is located at the edge
of the city where the Denison highway hits Morningside avenue.
With the recent opening of this highway to the public, the filling
station will become one of the most popular in the city. The garage
employs only skilled mechanics and offers efficient and reasonable
service to the public.

Although
only slightly over two years old, the print shop of the Morningside
News is one of the progressive small shops of the city. The News
itself is the only suburban weekly in Sioux City and is gaining
favor in its drive to urge Morningside people to "Try Morningside
First." R. E. Ritts and A. H. Moen are both
well known to the printing trade in the city. With six employees
and two salesmen they have built up a prosperous printing business
that has caused them to recently move into larger quarters and
add new equipment.

The
business of this firm was established in 1900, and has handled
more Morningside real estate than any other concern. It is the
recording agency for the Hartford Fire and Tornado Insurance Co.,
and several other of the larger companies.
It has been one of the important factors in the development of
Morningside, its members having always taken an active part in
promoting the institutions that have made Morningside Sioux City's
largest and most attractive residential district, where education
may be had, every step from kindergarten to college degree.

In
1905, the C. E. Brink Market was established and first
opened to the public. From the start Mr. Brink concentrated upon
real service to his patrons, and the gratifying growth of the
business testifies to the wisdom of this plan. In addition to
the complete line of the best meats always on hand, a small stock
of high grade groceries and fresh bakery goods is carried for
the accommodation of the general trade. A feature of the Brink
Market is a modern icing and cooling system, which keeps all meats
in the display case fresh during
the hottest weather, and is one of the few equipments of the kind
in Sioux City. Two people are employed, Mr. Brink being in charge
of the establishment.

management of Andrew Johnson, and from the beginning established
itself as one of the up-to-date garages of the city. On March
8, 1921, Sidney L. Erskine and Clarence D. Brasefield
purchased the business and are still the proprietors, through
close personal attention to the needs of patrons having brought
the establishment to its present standing. An adequate force of
experts is maintained at all times to handle the increasing volume

One of the biggest little drug stores in the city is that known
as the Morningside Pharmacy, operated by E. K. Barney and
F. W. Bennett. They also manufacture a widely known medicine
known as Gastro-Pulvis. This is under the name of Barney-Bennett
Co. The store was founded in 1905. It serves the populous suburb
of Morningside from which it takes its name. They handle drugs,
drug sundries, college books, student supplies and Eastman Kodaks.
Some idea of the extent to which they will go to give their patrons
service is shown in the statement that they have Western Union
service, long distance telephone service, they are agents for
the Tribune and Journal want ads and have numerous other conveniences
for the people of Morningside and the students of Morningside
College. They maintain a prescription department with three registered
pharmacists and two assistants. Many of their customers have moved
to other sections of the city but continue to have prescriptions
filled at the Morningside Pharmacy. Gastro-Pulvis was first put
on the market in a retail way, but so popular was it that they
soon began the manufacturing on a large scale and then gave it
wide distribution.
