when the ladies of the garrison were badly served. Restormel is supposed to be the work of Richard, King of the Romans and earl of Cornwall, temp Henry III, but he only rebuilt. The very name Restormel (or as it is often called, Lestormel ?) tells us that it was important in Celtic times. St.Michael's Mount, except parts of the chapel and the great wall by the front entrance door is of about Henry 7th's time and later. Pengersick is of the time of Henry 8,as are also Pendennis and St.Mawes. Star Castle, Scilly, dates from Elizabeth. Cromwell's Castle and the ruins of Charles's in Scilly, recall later times.
There were many other castles that have now disappeared as, e.g.,the Lucy's castle at Truro, the memory of which is preserved in the name Castle Hill, and on Carn Brea, the outlines of which can still be traced.
MANOR-HOUSES AND COUNTRY-SEATS
These are fairly numerous, though many of the more ancient manor-houses have been altogether destroyed, and others remain as fragments used as farm houses or barns. Some of them will be noticed under their respective parishes. Of Tudor houses we note Trecarrel (in Lezant),Lanherne (Mawgan-in-Pydar),Cothele (in Calstock),Trelawne (Pelynt),Place (Fowey),Godolphin (Breage), Trenethic(Wendron). Prideaux Place (Padstow), dates from about 1600, and Lanhydrock from later in the same century. For Ince Castle see under St.Stephen's-by-Saltash below.
MISCELLANEOUS BUILDINGS OF ANTIQUARIAN INTEREST
Such are the ancient stannart parliament house and prison at Lostwithiel now used as a masonic hall; the ancient bridges at Lostwithiel (repaired 1359), Looe and Wadebridge.
MUNICIPAL & CORPORATE INSIGNIA & PROPERTIES
Of these the ivory casket preserved at Bodmin, and the loving cup presented to the mayors of Penryn by Jane Killigrew are interesting examples. The ancient corporate seals and arms are also of considerable interest.
