CORSER DNA PROJECT

The use of DNA to identify possible links between families is growing in popularity, and a project has been opened by Family Tree DNA for the names covered by my One Name study.  The project is called the Corser Project for brevity, but it is intended to cover all the other spellings as well.

The basis of the use of DNA in genealogy is the ability to compare samples of  Y-DNA - only found in males - to see if donors share a common ancestor at some time in the past. The accepted level of  comparison is 37 markers - if a match is found at this level the existence of a common ancestor is almost guaranteed. A  12-marker comparison does not have enough markers to be assured of a meaningful match. A detailed discussion of the usefulness and limitations of DNA matching can be found at World Families   and  GENUKI DNA Testing

To date the Project has 11 male participants, and testing has confirmed links between three of them and uncovered a link between another two. There is also one female member. I would particularly like to have more Causer members, to see if there is any cross-over between the names. There are instances of both names occurring  in the same area, so it would be very useful to compare DNA for both names. I would also like to have Cawser and Causier members.

Male members of families with the names in my study are invited to join in by donating  a sample of their DNA to the project. Full details of what is involved can be found  at the  Corser DNA Project  web page, and if you wish to join the Project you can sign on at  Join the Corser DNA Project

If you are already in a Y-DNA project perhaps you would consider pooling resources to widen both data bases.

DISCLAIMER

Family Tree DNA is a commercial enterprise, so a payment is required for the testing. I have no monetary interest in the company and receive no payment when anyone joins the project. Each person who donates a sample for testing is dealing directly with the company, so I do not handle any money or personal details.
