The Cossette family had farmed for many generations near the town of Ste-Geneviève in the Batiscan township in the Trois-Rivières municipality. Isidore Cossette was born there in 1794.

He married Sofie Crevier from Cap-de-le-Madeleine which at the time was a small town across the St. Maurice River from the town of Trois-Rivières. (note: today Cap-de-le-Madeleine is a part of the City of Trois-Rivières) They settled in the Champlain district just to the East.
