JOSEPH ARBUCKLE

Signed and sealed in the presence of EMILY JENKINS and WILLIAM WRAY

Joseph (1801-1863), printer, was the son of John Arbuckle, Strabane linen merchant and sometime schoolmaster at Lifford, Co Donegal (1749-1822) and Martha Green of Londonderry (1762 -1836).

He was the grandson of Joseph Arbuckle (1727-1781), merchant of Strabane and brother to  Margaret who married (pre 1828) George Buchanan, bootmaker and leathercutter, and Matilda  who married (pre 1828) Robert Campbell, tobacconist, both of Strabane. Robert Campbell and Matilda Arbuckle both died 1840. Known further siblings are John of Springhill, Strabane (m [1] unknown [2] 1836 Elizabeth Farquhar), William, publican of Barrack Street and Calhame, Strabane  (m c1815 Sarah Stevenson (d 1833), Thomas, plumber and coppersmith in Londonderry (m 1828 Sarah Dunbar), Anne (d 1839) and another who married James Pollock of Stanylane, Killynaught.

The marriages of the Campbell children may be found in the registers of 2nd Donagheady Presbyterian Church:

Arbuckle families are recorded in Griffiths Valuation (1858) and earlier Abercorn rentals at Killynaught, and in the adjacent townlands of Gortileck and Windy Hill (Donagheady parish), indicating the origins of the Strabane family.

The communion roll of 1st Strabane Presbyterian Church states that Joseph resided with nephew Joseph Buchanan and family in the town.
