WARE LONG Ware Long was a stonemason. Immigrated from Germany as "Lang". Changed to "Long" when he went to England then on to Wales...need to check this information again.

Ware Long was born in the 1720s and died about 1816 in what is now West Virginia. This is according to the court testimony in Ware Long v. Turberville, where service is attempted in 1816 on Ware Long and it is found it he had passed away. In this case they indicate he is the oldest son of John Long, who was the oldest son of Richard Long. In addition, the will of Jeremiah Long indicates him as the father of Richard Long.

From MyFamily Long Site:

Of the family history previous to coming to America, nothing is known of the family, only that the family first emigrated from Germany to England thence to Wales. The family name at that time being LANG. The name was changed to Long (the English for Lang) before coming to America.

The emigration of Ware was not of his own free will, for on account of some political offense against the government of England, in which a great number were implicated, he was one of a thousand offenders that were transported to America. He resigned himself to the new order of things which the new law prescribed as the penalty for his offense and settled in Culpepper (sic) Co., Va.

He married Sarah Jennings, dau. of Luke and Sarah Jennings of which until proven Grandpa Jennings was thought to be Luke "Long". By occupation he was a stoneman, in which vocation he was engaged when the colonies revolted against the mother country. After long years of waiting the exile time for revenge had come, for by his fireside he had eight soldiers (his sons). He lived to see the efforts to form a free government crowned with success and his thirst of vengeance satisfied.

--------

Ware had eight sons and two daughters. Six (?) of his sons served in the Revolutionary War.

Nicholas, of Irish descent, b. April 12, 1764 in Culpepper (sic) Co., Va., enlisted in the Revolutionary war, Apr. 1 1781 in the neighborhood of Williamsburg, Va., marched to Drinking Springs, then Raccoon ford on the Rappahannock, then to Richmond, where he was honorably discharged the first of July, 1781, but was drafted again the latter of July under Capt. Knash and Towles in Col. Alcock's Va. 8th Regt. He was in the Siege of York and helped take Cornwallis in October, 1781. He got no regular discharge, just a verbal discharge. He m. Margaret, last name unknown, but thought to be Turner, on Nov 5, 1783. They moved to Botetourt Co., Va., in 1786 and lived there until moving to Henry Co., Va., then to Green Co., Tenn. about 1782, then Anderson Co.,, then Warren Co., then Jefferson Co., then Knox Co., then to Grainger Co., all in Tenn.

Our records say he died in Jefferson Co., Tenn., July 27, 1839. He applied for his pension in Knox Co., Tenn., in Aug. 1833. It was granted at Knoxville,, Tenn. He received $60.00 back pay and $20.00 a year until his death. Witnesses were, Barnard Slaughter of Anderson Co., Tenn. and Southy Nelson of Knox Co., Tenn. Other listed were Mardia Yarnal, Robert Tindle and Linsday Childre.

He lost his speech from a fever about 1826 and wasn't able to speak above his breath, which made him hard to understand. Margaret was b. in Va., in 1758. She applied for a pension in Jefferson., Tenn., in 1843 and again in Greene Co., on Nov. 25, 1845, where she may have died, being 87 years old. She said she had lived in Greene Co. for about 30 years. She said they were married by publication of banns, according to ceremonies and rules of the Church of England or the Protestant Church, neither a license or marriage bond. She had a record of her seven children born in Va., but the dates were incorrect, so she destroyed them when she left Botetourt, Co., Va. She said they had eleven children.

HARRIET LONG Known as "Hattie", b March 4, 1887, d November 24, 1972. Hattie was one of nine children born to Melissa Reynolds and Moses Long. Her father died when she was very young. After his death Melissa moved the family from Rolla, MO to Cherryvale, KS, where she ran a boarding house. Melissa was a striking woman and the children had several stepfathers the last of who was named Stark. When Hattie was about thirteen years old a well-dressed stranger, by the name of Bill Wolfenbarger, stayed at the boarding house. Bill asked to marry Hattie. Melissa gave her permission to take Hattie if he would pay off her bills and he agreed.

Hattie's niece, Oletha Nelson, said that Bill Wolfenbarger was really Bill Dalton of the famous Dalton/Doolan bank robber gangs. She called him that old outlaw. It is said that Bill Dalton was killed in the double bank robbery in Coffeyville, KS. Oletha said he got away and took his mother's maiden name Wolfenbarger, Notes for W. C. WOLFENBARGER.

Hattie and Bill lived around Guthrie, OK. Bill ran the bar and Hattie ran the restaurant. They were always involved in some kind of boxing or horse racing promotion. They also lived in Oklahoma, OK and Farley, NM where in 1942 they ran a motel, restaurant and liquor store in buildings made of adobe.

Said to be one of the Dalton boys. He took his mother's maiden name of Wolfenbarger. Bill was a lot older than Hattie. She wanted to leave him, but he threatened to kill her family. They adopted a boy and named him Bill Junior.

ALMA LOVINA LONGDied at age 83. Best grandmother ever!  Burial: Unknown, Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Memorial Park Cemetery

Alma was born in Henry County, Missouri to Melissa Reynolds and Moses Long in 1889. She married William Lee Nelson on May 3, 1903 in Cherryvale, KS. One year later their first daughter, Oletha, was born and the family moved to Bartlesville, OK. They had three more daughters, Opal, Dorothy, and Annabel, and one son William.

One of Alma's granddaughters remembers: "During our early childhood, our grandmother helped make our dresses. I remember slumping while she measured the hems. She always wanted them long so I could wear them a long time. Anyway, by slumping, the dresses were not as long as she had intended.

Then another time while giving my sisters and me hair cuts, she cut my sister's ear lobe. That was almost the end of her hair cutting days.
When we went to tell her about our engagement, she looked at us and said it could not be any other way. You see, she had her eyes on him for me long before we knew each other. She used to see him when she picked up Bill. Would you believe I was at her house when he was trying to call for our first date? Yes, I accepted.

For many years Alma and William paled around with two other couples. The wives of the two other couples were sisters. One of them was married to Pearl Pearson. Years later one of the sisters, Pearl's wife, died. Now one of the couples was gone. Some time later the other couple was gone when Pearl's brother-in-law died. Pearl married his sister-in-law creating another couple so the two couples, Alma and William and Pearl and the other sister, paled around. Years later Pearl's second wife died, as did William. Then, late in life, the two remaining of the original six married each other making one last couple, Alma and Pearl.

Another granddaughter says, "Best grandmother ever. She always had a kind word and a sweet smile, and was the best cook around. She was just "grandma". She and Pearl had the first TV I ever saw, and when she lived in Bartlesville I would catch a bus on Saturday morning and go across town to visit and watch the TV. (I was five and eight years older than my siblings, so they were "too little" to ride the bus. Later she and Pearl moved north of Dewey, and each summer I got to and spend a whole week with her. That was the highlight of my summers, not the swimming pool, not the vacations, but a whole week with Grandma. She taught me to knit and crochet at age eight. I got to "help" with the planting, feed the hog and chickens, and best of all, I didn't have to share her with anyone. Because my cousins were all older than my siblings and myself, I thought she was just "ours". What a shock it was when I finally realized I had to share her. She had so many family stories, and I regret that I was really too young to remember them in detail. When I was 16, and had been dating my future husband for about a year, Grandma asked me when we were getting married. I answered "how did you know, because we haven't told anyone yet." She just knew--that was Grandma."

WILLIAM LEE NELSONWilliam died in his sleep of a heart attack, either the evening of October 31 or morning of November 1, 1943. He worked in the oil field until 1925. Oletha worked very hard keeping the house and raising the children. While growing up Margaret wanted to play the piano, but they didn't have one at home. One day Earl bought one too many tools and Oletha told him Margaret had to have a piano. So, when he come home the next day, there sat an old clunky piano in the living room. Oletha did the teacher's ironing for a lot of the music lessons.  Burial:  Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Memorial Park Cemetery

Dot was always interested in the children of the family, and made each one feel special. In her early 80's she took care of an older woman who didn't have anyone else to help her.
