2 CONC t he married Mrs. Dolly Todd: her maiden name was Payne. She was, as I am informed, a Quakere
2 CONC ss, and was born in the county of Hanover, but at the time of her marriage resided in Philade
2 CONC lphia. It was, if I mistake not, while he was a member of Congress, sitting at the time in Ph
2 CONC iladelphia, that he made her acquaintance. She was a lady of exceedingly attractive manners
2 CONC . During the latter years of her life she resided in Washington, and in her old age was bapti
2 CONC zed and became a member of St. John's Church in that city. Mr. Madison died without children
2 CONC . Mrs. Madison had one child, a son, by her former marriage.

2 CONC t that a grandchild Martha Lumpkin is named in her mother's will in 1788 and Elizabeth is mis
2 CONC sing and presumed deceased.  However, further evidence suggests that Martha may be a daughte
2 CONC r of one of the other sisters and that Elizabeth in fact was married to Henry Cox, father o
2 CONC f Curd Cox.  It is possible that Elizabeth was married to a Lumpkin who died and married Henr
2 CONC y Cox second, though research has revealed that it is more likely that Martha belonged to Eli

2 CONT One piece of evidence of this marriage comes in a deed between Henry Cox and Thomas Dawson da
2 CONC ted 1761 Goochland Co. VA.  This land (100 acres) appears to be land which Elizabeth inherite
2 CONC d from her father in his will of 1753.  Elizabeth Cox also signed the deed.  Elizabeth and he
2 CONC r sister Martha who married Thomas Dawson were the only two Richardson children who inherite
2 CONC d land in Goochland Co.  Then there is another deed around the same time for 200 acres bein
2 CONC g sold to John Cox.  Elizabeth also signed this deed.  Elizabeth had inherited 320 acres an
2 CONC d Henry Cox sold it 100 acres to Thomas Dawson and 200 acres to John Cox.

2 CONT In 1777, apparently after the treaty of Long Island, TN was one county by the name of Washing
2 CONC ton.  In 1779 the county divided and Sullivan Co. was formed. In 1783 more of Washington beca
2 CONC me Green Co. In 1786, Hawkins was formed out of part of Sullivan. In 1792 Knox and Jefferso
2 CONC n Counties were formed out of Green and Hawkins. In 1795 part of Knox became Blount.  It wa
2 CONC s in Jefferson Co. where the Coxes first settled.  The Nolachucky formed its southern boundar
2 CONC y.  All of these counties encompassed more area than they do today.  In later years they cont
2 CONC inued to divide until TN became a state of 96 counties.

2 CONT 	He bought property in Blount Co. TN, Nolachucky River, Nov 4, 1796.  In July of 1777 the Che
2 CONC rokee met, at what is today Kingsport, with reps from VA, NC and the Watuagua settlements o
2 CONC f negotiate the treaty of Long Island.  After several days of rowdy merrimaking, a murder, an
2 CONC d some earnest diplomacy, they reluctantly ceded more land to the whites.  The western bounda
2 CONC ry was pushed down the  Holsten River to the mouth of Cloud Creek.  From there it ran to th
2 CONC e highest point in the Cinch Mtns.  The southern boundary was extended to the Nolichucky Rive
2 CONC r. This opened the area for more white settlement.

2 CONC rth bank of the Nolachucky River adj. Thomas Garret; Daniel Hill.  The deed was witnessed b
2 CONC y Samuel Jack, Daniel Hill and Lam Durossell.  These were undoubtedly some of the first new s
2 CONC ettlers in to the area.  Further research will reveal if it is this Daniel Hill's family whic
2 CONC h married later into the Cox family.

2 CONC 4 John Cox sold the land to Jessee Moore.  At this same time Jessee Moore bought 60 more acre
2 CONC s from Samuel Hill.  Henry Cox witnessed the deed. There is a marriage in Halifax Dec. 20, 17
2 CONC 91 Bk #1, p#20 of a Henry Cox to Patsy Wood.  Did  Henry have a son who did not go to TN wit

2 CONC unday following at Montpelier in Orange. Her funeral sermon was preached on Wednesday, the 30
2 CONC th of December following, by the Rev. Mr. James Marye, Jr., on Revelation ch. 14, v. 13.

2 CONT The Taylors of Orange trace their ancestry back to James Taylor, of Carlisle, England. The ti
2 CONC me of his emigration to Virginia is not known. It appears he settled on the Chesapeake betwee
2 CONC n the North and York Rivers, (Doc. A.) He died in 1698. He had several children,--one of who
2 CONC m (Mary) was the mother of Judge Edmund Pendleton. His son John (who married a Pendleton) i
2 CONC s the ancestor of Colonel John Taylor, of Caroline. His son James took up lands in Orange, an
2 CONC d was a first settler. He was the father of Frances, wife of Ambrose Madison and grandmothe
2 CONC r of the President. He had four sons,--James, George, Zachary, and Erasmus. From James are de
2 CONC scended the Taylors of Kentucky. George had fourteen sons, seven of whom served in the Revolu
2 CONC tionary War, and thirteen of whom held offices under Government at the same time. Some of hi
2 CONC s descendants are now residing in Orange, and are members of the Episcopal Church. Zachary ha
2 CONC d seven sons and three daughters. He was grandfather of General Zachary Taylor. The latter wa
2 CONC s born at Hare Forest, about four miles from Orange Court-House. Erasmus had two sons and fiv
2 CONC e daughters,--viz.: John and Robert, Mildred, (married Wm. Morton,) Frances, (married --- Bur
2 CONC nley,) Elizabeth, (married --- Glassel,) Lucy, (married the Rev. A. Balmaine,) Jane, (marrie
2 CONC d Charles P. Howard.) John was father of the late Judge John Taylor, of Mississippi. Robert m
2 CONC arried Frances Pendleton, and from them are descended most of the Taylors now residing in Ora
2 CONC nge,--all of whom retain their attachment to the Church of their fathers.

2 CONT A.--James Madison (the late President) is the eldest of twelve children--eight sons and fou
2 CONC r daughters--of whom but one brother and one sister are now living. He was born on the nort
2 CONC h bank of the Rappahannock, at Port Conway, opposite the town of Port Royal, on the 5th of Ma
2 CONC rch, 1751. His father's name was James, the son of Ambrose Madison and Frances Taylor. He liv
2 CONC ed to the age of seventy-eight years, and died in February, 1801. The father of Ambrose was J
2 CONC ohn, the son of John Madison, who it appears took out, by a statement of a patent now in poss
2 CONC ession, certain lands on the shores of the Chesapeake, between North and York Rivers, in Gloc
2 CONC ester county, near Colonel Taylor's creek, in the year 1653,--6th Charles II.,--Richard Benne
2 CONC t, Governor and Captain-General of Virginia. The ancestors of Frances Taylor are traced one r
2 CONC emove further back, and were residents of the same district of country. The name of his mothe
2 CONC r was Nelly Conway, descended from some of the early settlers. Her father, Francis, lived nea
2 CONC r Port Royal, in the county of Caroline, whose father, Edwin Conway, married Elizabeth Thomps
2 CONC on. Her mother, Rebecca, was the daughter of E. Gaines and John Catlett, whose father, John
2 CONC , was born in Virginia and educated in England. He was killed by the Indians in defending th
2 CONC e fort of Port Royal,--being a first settler. A great-aunt of his was likewise killed by th
2 CONC e Indians lower down the river. It appears that all the ancestry just traced were natives o
2 CONC f Virginia, and, it is believed, for the most part at least, if not altogether, of English de
2 CONC scent. In both the paternal and maternal line of ancestry they were planters, and among the r

2 CONT When James Madison died, there was a suit in which Dolly Madison explained
2 CONT her troubles in settling the Estate.  In Mr. Madison's Will, he said "I
2 CONT bequeath the said sum of money to be equally divided between all my nephews
2 CONT and nieces which shall at that time be living and in case of any of them
2 CONT being dead and leaving issue at the time living, then such issue shall take
2 CONT thepalce of its or their deceased parent."  Dolly Madison tells the Court
2 CONT that there were thirty one such nephews and nieces.  She says Mr. Madison had
2 CONT six brothers and sisters, Francis Madison,  William Madison,  Ambrose
2 CONT Madison,  Nelly Hite,  Sarah Macon and Frances Rose.

2 CONT . In the year 1785, the Rev. James Madison, afterward Bishop of Virginia, became its minister
2 CONC , and continued so until his death in 1812, long before which the congregation had dwindled i
2 CONC nto almost nothing,--the church on the Island having sunk into ruins, and the little remnan
2 CONC t of Episcopalians meeting at a brick church a few miles from the island, on the road from i
2 CONC t to Williamsburg. That has also entirely disappeared. A young friend of mine, who was in Wil
2 CONC liamsburg about the year 1810, informed me that, being desirous of hearing the oratory of Bis
2 CONC hop Madison, he had once or twice gone out on a Sabbath morning to this church, but that th
2 CONC e required number for a sermon was not there, though it was a very small one, and so he was d
2 CONC isappointed. It might be expected that I should in this place say something about Bishop Madi
2 CONC son, in addition to what may be found in my first article of Reminiscences of Virginia; but
2 CONC , though I have endeavoured to procure some of his papers for this purpose, I have thus far b
2 CONC een disappointed. I can only say that in the year 1775 he was ordained deacon and priest by t
2 CONC he Bishop of London. In the year 1774 he became Professor in the College of William and Mary
2 CONC , in the year 1777, President of the College, and in the year 1790 was consecrated Bishop o
2 CONC f Virginia. His addresses to the Convention breathe a spirit of zealous piety, and his recomm
2 CONC endations are sensible and practical.
