Portrait and Biographical Album of Fayette County Iowa
Chicago: Lake City Publishing Co.; 1891.

Thomas Jefferson Cozens, M. D., a practicing and prominent physician and surgeon of the county, who  since May, 1877, has resided in Oelwein, was born in Mercer County, Ky.,  October 31, 1825, and is a son of Dr. Peter V. H. and Sarah (Hall)  Cozens.  His father was born in Lancaster, Pa., May 5, 1789, and was of  the second generation in descent from Holland ancestors.  His father,  Garrett Cozens was also a native of the Keystone State.  The mother of  our subject was born in Bourbon County, Ky., March 13, 1790, and her  family was of English extraction.  Dr. Cozens, Sr., was a practicing  physician of Kentucky for several years and gained a wide reputation.   His death occurred while on a visit to his son in Addison County of that  State in 1858, his wife surviving him until 1876, when she departed this  life in Mercer County.

The subject of this sketch received liberal educational advantages in  his youth.  In his early boyhood days he attended the public schools and  completed his literary education in Bacon College of Georgetown, Ky.   Having determined to make the practice of medicine his life work, he  soon afterward became a student in the Cincinnati Medical College and  was graduated in the class of 1856, after which he engaged in practice  with his father in his native State.

Dr. Cozens on the 25th of October, 1849, was united in marriage, in  Breckenridge County, Ky., with Miss Virginia Cain, who was born in  Bedford County, Va., September 30, 1830, and with her parents removed to  Kentucky in 1843.  The Doctor and his wife have had five children, two  sons and three daughters.  Nannie Virginia, born August 23, 1850, died  January 21, 1871; Mary Belle, born June 2, 1852, is now the wife of F.  E. Hale of Chicago; Charles Major, born December 10, 1855, married Miss  Ella Nichols of Oelwein, and is now engaged in the furniture business in  Chicago; Thomas B., born January 2, 1857, died in January, 1873; Ona  Blanche, born May 31, 1865, is now the wife of Richard A. Cavanaugh of  Chicago.

Dr. Cozens removed from Kentucky to Franklin Ind., in 1854, and there  engaged in merchandising a short time, when he removed to Mattoon, Ill.,  where he was engaged in mercantile business until the spring of 1862.   He then returned to Breckenridge Ky.  On the 9th of October, 1863, he  removed to Chicago, Ill., and was a resident of the city until burned  out in the great fire of October, 1871, when he went to New York City,  where he spent three years in the practice of his profession.  He  returned to Chicago in 1874 and three years later, in May, 1877 again  changed his place of residence, locating in Oelwein, Iowa, then a mere  hamlet.  Here he has been engaged in professional business continuously  since and his practice covers a broad area.  Dr. Cozens is well up in  his profession and has always easily obtained his share of the business  in every locality where he has practiced.  He was appointed physician to  the Oelwein Board of Health on the incorporation of the town and served  in that capacity ever since.  He is also physician to the poor for  Jefferson Township and part of Scott and Oran Townships.  He is a  Democrat in politics, socially is a Royal Arch Mason and a member of the  Council.  At present he is non-affiliated and holds a demit from Mattoon  Lodge, No. 260, of Mattoon Ill., where he was initiated into the  mysteries of the order in 1854.  Dr. Cozens and his wife are members of  the Christian Church and the high esteem in which they are held  throughout the community gives evidence that they are among Oelwein's  best citizens.

Regimental History
Ninth Cavalry
KENTUCKY
(3-YEARS)

Ninth Cavalry. -- Col., Richard T. Jacob, Lieut.-Col., John
Boyle; Majs., John T. Farris, William C. Moreau, George W.
Rue, James R. Page, John C. Brent.
About July 27, 1802, Richard T. Jacob issued a call to raise
one regiment of cavalry for 12 months. In a week's time
Adjt.-Gen. Finnell informed him that if reports were true the
regiment was full and overflowing.
One battalion of 448 men came in one day under George W. Rue,
who afterward was made major. The regiment was formed into
companies, nearly 1,000 horses shod, and on the night of Aug.
22 the officers and men were sworn in and uniforms, guns and
rations issued. Thus in less than three weeks a regiment of
1,244 officers and men was raised and equipped, and two
battalions started to where the enemy was expected to come
into the state.
On Aug. 30 two companies acting as escort to Gen. Nelson, only
seven days from formation, were in a great battle and behaved
well. Col. John Boyle, with about half of the regiment, was
at the battle of Perryville. Later, the reunited regiment,
now under command of Col. Boyle, was sent to the Cumberland
River, and many were the encounters it had with Champ Ferguson
and others.
At the end of the year it had several brushes with John Morgan
and command, and aided to drive him out of Kentucky. It is
almost impossible to name the innumerable conflicts the
command had up to that date. On May 10, 575 men of the
regiment were attacked at Horseshoe Bottom by all of Morgan's
command.
The regiment participated in the pursuit of Morgan through
Indiana and Ohio, and had the honor of the last fight in
Kentucky at Marrowbone and the first fight when it overtook
the enemy in Ohio. The regiment's time soon afterward expired
and it was mustered out.

Here is the front page story from the Tulare Daily Advance-Register
newspaper, Tulare CA , Friday,  Jan 9th, 1931
Three Rivers Hunter Killed Accidentally
Struck in the forehead by a bullet from a .22 caliber rifle, John
Cozine, 60, a woodchopper on a Three Rivers ranch, was accidently
killed Thursday.
Cozine was returning to his tent on the Adam Alles ranch near Three
Rivers from a rabbit hunt, Thursday morning, when Jess Finch offered
him a ride in his truck. As the man climbed into the rear of the truck
the gun was discharged, sending the bullet through his forehead. It is
believed the hammer of the rifle caught on the truck.
Cozine was rushed to the store at Three Rivers by Finch and a companion.
Coroner J. M. Hadley, Deputy Sheriff W. G. Wilton and Constable R.
Brown of Woodlake investigated. Hadley announced that there will be no
inquest as the shooting was clearly accidental.
The body was taken to the Hadley funeral home in Visalia pending word
from relatives.

I have been reading this 1882 Carroll County History Book and it certainly is very interesting to know what had taken place in the 1800s.  Especially during the Civil War.  Carroll County, let alone the Missouri State, felt the pressure from the government to either be a secessionist or abolitionist, but Missouri would not be forced to be either. In fact, it is noted they were just as happy to let them (the other states) feud it out and leave Missouri out of the picture.  As we know this doesn't happen, because after Fort Sumpter was attacked, Civil War began between the North and the South.  Confederacy State drew men from Missouri to fight for their cause as well and the Union.  Many historical facts has occurred throughout the Civil War period.  What you didn't hear much about, other than knew they existed, was what had been happening to the civilians during this time period.  There were Bushwackers, Guerrillas and Jayhawkers that cau sed havoc to these defenseless civilians. This is what was brought to my attention that may have an interesting history to the COZINE family member, Sarah Ann Cozine's - mainly to her husband.

In the spring of 1863 a force to be reckoned with, the guerrillas, who were nothing but deceivers, murders, and steal, of one group in particular was William T. Anderson, known as Bill Anderson and his raiders.  The story goes that he made his way into Missouri and into Carroll County doing their evil deeds.

This is a piece of passage from this Carroll County History Book, 1882: "By July 1864 they come across Baum's Mill near where Cyrus Lyons lived, and with him was Edwin Matthews and a neighbor who happen by chance to be present there, John Henry.  Anderson called Cyrus Lyons out to the fence and ask him why he was not in the service.  He told him that he was. Anderson asked him why he wasn't out there trying to drive out the bushwackers. Lyons thought he was talking to federals and answered that he had not been informed that his service was needed, but will do my duty if called upon. Anderson said that you done enough. Told him who he was, Bill Anderson and instantly shot him dead. They went after the other two, Henry and Matthews and killed them as well."  The story goes that "Mrs. Lyons was laid up in bed very sick and made her way out, on her hands and knees, to her husband when she heard the shots." These men continued on their way  and continue to deceive, murder, and steal.

It is known to us that Sarah's Husband, Cyrus Lyons, death is documented on 13 July 1864 and is tied in with her name. This may be the same Cyrus Lyons from the incident mentioned above and in the Carroll County History Book. Cyrus Lyons is buried in Old Pleasant Park Cemetery, Carroll County.
