In George's affidavit to the pension department he describes what happened: " While in the line of duty, near La Vergne Tennessee, I received an injury to the bowels just above the right groin, which injury immediately resulted in a compound rupture. Injury was received while I was riding my horse to water, and leading other horses (horses belonging to his Battery) my horse stumbling and going down a hill, throwing me over his head, and stepping on me and cutting me with the his iron shoe". George was again discharged honorably May 24 1865 in New York City, NY.

My 1828 birthdate for GA Cozine came from a letter his daughter (my great-grandmother) wrote in the 1940s.  However, she was apparently wrong, because last year we found records from the Cozine family bible that show GA was the son of Harvey Cozine and Mary Ann Snider, and was born in 1831.  He left home early and never seemed to be sure of his birth year either as his age changes on census reports!

JOHN P. COZINE, editor of the Shelby News, was born in Mercer County, Ky., May 3, 1843, and is a son of Harvey and Mary (Snider) Cozine, natives, respectively, of Shelby and Mercer Counties. His paternal grandfather was born in Virginia, but settled in the southern part of Shelby County, Ky., whence Harvey Cozine, when quite young, moved to Mercer County, where he followed bricklaying. During the recent civil war, Harvey, with eight of his sons, joined the Union forces, John P., going out in March 1862, with company I, First Indiana Heavy Artillery, and being mustered out as sergeant at New Orleans, in March, 1865. He then went to Salem, Ind., where he published a paper for a while, was next reporter on the New Albany Commercial; then went to Leavenworth, Ind., in 1869, and purchased the Independent, which he conducted two years. His next venture was at Cloverport, Ky., where he established the Transcript, which he edited eight months; next he went to Louisville, and worked in the composing room of the Courier-Journal; in March, 1873, he removed to Shelbyville, and took charge of the mechanical department of the Shelby Courant for Emmett G. Logan, and eighteen months later rented his employer's office, and established the Republican (June, 1874), which journal became defunct in November, 1876. Mr. Cozine, then, entered the Sentinel office as manager, which position he held until the consolidation of the Sentinel with the Times, in September, 1886. November 10, 1886, he issued the first number of the News, which has now a circulation of 1,920 copies, about 1,500 of which are circulated within the county. June 1, 1887, A. F. BLUE SPEAKS FOR GRAY.
Lexington, Ky.- Typifying the spirit which now exist between the boys
who wore the blue and the gray during the civil war, John M. Montague,
a confederate veteran, who applied to County Judge Scott for a
pension, was given a recommendation and testimony necessary to the pension
being granted by M.R. Cozine, a veteran of the union army. The men
laughingly recalled the days when they were opposed to each other in
battle when making application to Judge Scott for Montague's pension,
and Mr. Cozine assured the judge that his present friend and former
foe was in every way worthy and deserving of a pension.

Two Grooms and 1 Bride - Essie Railey of Elizabethtown as are Eugene Cozine and Joe O'Brein.
The story goes back 6-7 months ago.  At that time after a courtship of moderate length, Miss Railey became engaged to Cozine.  The girl has no parents, her nearest relative being a sister, who is opposed to the union with Cozine.  The prospective bride was employed at the home of Mayor R. I. Wintersmith, and upon the advice of Cozine, made application in the courts to have Dr. Waddle of Elizabethtown appointed her guardian, as she is under 18 years old.  Cozine hoped that by this means he could get the guardian's consent, as he could not get the sister's, because he claimed of the fact that Joe O'Brien, a former suitor, influenced her against him.

O' Brien's influence with not only the sister, but with the girl herself, were such that Cozine became jealous and had several quarrels with his sweet-heart, warning her not to receive any more attention from O'Brien.  A violent quarrel last week resulted, so the girl says, in her taking morphine.  Cozine last night claimed that she only "played possum" to hurry up the marriage.  Things were in this muddled state when Cozine and the girl resolved to evade the opposition of the sister and get rid of O'Brien by eloping to Jeffersonville.  O'Brien was on alert, and when the couple boarded the train for this city, he waited until the train started, and then presented himself to them.

They were somewhat alarmed at first, thinking that he intended to interfere with their plans, but he clamed their fears and assured them that he had come as a friend and would help them get the license and witness the ceremony.  When Jeffersonville was reached about 8 o'clock last evening, all were on good terms and went to Magistrate Nixon's office to have the knot tied.  O'Brien went out with James Keigwin to get the license and then his love for the girl asserted itself.  Cozine remained with the bride at the wedding parlors, and when O'Brien applied for the license he asked that it be made out in his own name and that of Miss Railey.  The County Clerk does not issue license any more without a witness to swear to the girl's age.  No one in Jeffersonville would do it.  So the young Lochinvar's scheme was foiled.  The only witness who could help him was Cozine, who expected to be the groom himself.

O'Brien went back and told Cozine he could not get the license.  He had a talk with the girl and she announced that she had decided not to marry Cozine and was convinced that true happiness lay with O'Brien.  Cozine had learned from Keigwin of O'Brein's attempted to trick, and when his sweetheart made her decision he refused to swear to her age.  The situation resolved itself into a dispute all around. Neither of the men would assist the other in procuring the license, while the girl was speedily reduced to tears and a willingness to marry anybody just so she got out of Jeffersonville and a bad predicament.  The County Clerk got stubborn himself after the trio had quarreled until midnight and announced that he would not give them license under any circumstances.  At a late hour no settlement had been reached.

The parties came back to Elizabethtown Wednesday and that night O'Brien and the girl were married at  Judge English's home.  Mr. Waide English qualified as guardian of the bride and gave his consent to the marriage.  Cozine when he found that his rival married the girl, went to work on the railroad and was evidently very much put out.
