A Grocery Bought - and twice sold in twenty-four hours - S K Cozine here
Few instances are reported of greater activity in Lexington real estate than the following: On Wednesday night Mr S K Cozine, a former Lexington grocer who now lives in Meridian, Miss. arrived in the city for a few days visit. On the way from Louisville he learned that his old stand, corner of High Street and Broadway, could be purchased for a certain amount. He immediately went to the owner, Mr S T Saffrans, and effected a purchase.
Yesterday morning he took charge and conducted the business till noon, when he was bought out by Mr J W Parish, who will continue the business.
Though the exact figures are private, Mr Cozines profit is said to have been handsome. He and his family will probably return to Lexington to live in the spring.

Stop Kicking - Stop Kicking and begin to do something for the city is Mr Cozines advice - in favor of the new tax levey.
The impression of a great number of people in Lexington with regard to the tax levy of $1.25 is that it is exorbitant. Yet many business men of the city take just the opposite view and are satisfied with the present tax rate.
Mr S K Cozine, a well-known business man of the city, is one of these. Mr Cozine, when approached by a reporter, gave his view. Are you in favor of the $1.25 tax rate?
Yes; any business, entrprise or corporation suffers when funds for the running expenses are insufficient, and running a city of Lexingtons size is a very serious business.
How does the rate stand in comparison with other cities?
I have had experience with tax collections in six different States and believe it would be hard to find a city as well equipped as ours with as low a tax levy. Louisvilles tax rate is just a few cents under $2. Frankfort $1.80, Birmingham, Ala., $1.50; Meridian, Miss., $1.50 and the two last named places are very poorly lighted and policed.
What effect do you think this rate will have upon the city?
Just now it may have rather a depressing effect, caused by a large portion of our people feeling as if they have been imposed on and there is so much agitation of the subject in the newspapers. However, the sales at auction Thursday of valuable real estate showed rather a buoyant feeling and a strong faith in our future. My opinion is that with more money for public purposes the city will become more prosperous and the increased tax rate will prove a blessing rather than the great misfortune a great many seem to think it is. All we need is for the pople to realize the fact that we are living in the finest section of Gods universe, quit crocking and always have a good word for our beautiful city. When this condition of affairs, devoutly hoped for, exist, you will see the Belle of the Blue Grass make such strides in prosperity that the world will stand and look on in astonishment and envy.

Southern paper on death of Mrs Broach (Meridian, Dispatch)
After a brief illness, Mrs Lula G Broach, wife of Mr John M Broach, a prominet lumberman of Meridian, died Saturday afternoon at 3:58 oclock at the family residence on Ninth Street and Twenty-ninth Avenue. Her loved ones were about her bedside at the hour of dissolution and witnessed her passing.
Mrs Broach was formerly Miss Lula Cozine and the daughter of Mr & Mrs S K Cozine, she was 27 years of age and had lived the major portion of her life in Meridian. She came to Mississippi with her parents from Lexington, Ky., when a mere girl and was educated in the public schools of this city. Several years ago she was married to Mr John M Broach and two children have been born and are living to bless that union.
Until recently her health has been as good as could have been desired. Complications, however within the last few days had rendered her chances almost hopeless, but not until the very last did her attentive husband and family dispair.
Death quietly stole away his victim at 3:58 p.m., Saturday and left desolate the home which had before shown radiant with joy of her presence. The distress of the family was indeed great and to them went out the sympathy of scores of friends.
Surviving Mrs Broach, besides her husband, are two sons John and Claude Broach; father and mother, Mr and Mrs S K Cozine; one brother John Cozine of Decatur, GA; and three sisters, Miss Carrie Clyde Cozine and Mrs John Love of Meridian, and Mrs Alex George of Mississippi City, Miss.
Funeral Services will be conducted from the Christian Church, of which the deceased was a member, this afternoon at 3 oclock, Dr. R A Venable, of the Baptist Church, and Dr. J E Jones of the First Prebyterian Church, officiating, interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery..
Pall bearers that have been selected are: Messrs E B Cook, Lester Dowling, Tom Sinclair, J G Daly, L D Meyers, Eliot Cobb, R F Darrah, Linwood Griffin and Ethel Hall.

S.K. COZINE DEAD.
Brother Samuel Kerkendoll Cozine was born in Harrisburg (should read as
Harrodsburg), Ky., July 6, 1845 and died in Franklinton, on January 1,
1927, making him 81 years, six months and twenty-four days of age.
He was married to Miss Inez Sandusky June 13, 1871 in Jessaman  (should
read as Jessamine) County, Ky., who still survives. To this union five
children were born, three of whom survive, with eight grandchildren.
He united with the Deciples (Disciples) of Christ Church in early life,
thus giving all his life to God's service. He served for many years as
Elder and Sunday school superintendent.
In the fall of 1918 he moved to Franklinton with his son-in-law and
daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John M. Love, with whom he made his home.
In 1921 he celebrated his Golden wedding.
Not long after he came here he became affiliated with the Methodist
church where he was heartily welcomed.
In 1922 he was made president of the men's Bible class of the Methodist
Sunday school, and did a great deal for the class. He was steward of
the church and a great personal worker. He never missed a service and
the church will miss him. He had a great influence over the young
people, all of whom he loved.
The Twenty-third Psalm is especially applicable to his life. Well could
he say, "The Lord is my Shepherd," for God took care of him. How God
caused him to "lie down in green pastures," how God cared for him
daily; and he saw "rich things" God provided for him. God's Holy word,
the church, the Sunday school, all were means of grace to him. How God
led him out beside the "Still waters", for he loved the great river and
the small streams, and it was his delight to sit on the bank and fish,
while he meditated upon the beauties of nature and the love of the
Great Maker. His last day upon earth was spent in this fashion and he
came back to lie down in peace upon his couch, where he slipped away
with the Old Year, and from his close walk with God none could doubt
that in his "walk through the valley of the shadow of death" God was
with him.
A good man has gone to his reward, leaving behind a life worthy of
emulation, and while he will be missed by old and young throughout the
community, all rejoice at the peacefulness of his passing and in the
sweet memory of a life which was a blessing and a benediction through
his long and active years.

MRS. COZINE PASSES AWAY
Late Friday afternoon marked the passing away of Mrs. S. K. Cozine,
widow of the late S. K. Cozine and mother of Mrs. John M. Love of this
place. Death occured at the Hattiesburg (Miss.) sanitorium where Mrs.
Cozine was taken two weeks ago when she fell at the Love home and
fractured her hip, the nervous shock being followed by pneumonia from
which the patient died on the seventh day surrounded by her little
family.
The passing was indeed like a finished work, for it was the end of a
beautiful life which had grown and developed through years of the
highest cultural training and the faithful practice of the principles
of Christian service.
A native of Jas(s)mine County, Kentucky and member of one of the old
aristocratic Kentucky families, she was married at 21 to a real
Kentucky nobleman, the beloved and deeply honored S. K. Cozine, the two
of them coming here in their late life to make their home with their
son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John M. Love, and in the Love
home their golden wedding was gloriously and fittingly celebrated six
years before Mr. Cozine's death in 1927. Mrs. Cozine maintained her
active interest in church and social life in this community until
enfeebled health just a short time ago slowed down her physical
activities, though mentally and active until the time of her death. Her
sweet spirit and sunny nature were verified by the statement made at
the grave by her pastor and friend for many years, when he said he had
never seen her without meeting her sunny smile, except once in all the
years, and that was only a few hours before her passing on Friday.
Funeral service for Mrs. Cozine were held in the Myer(s) home at
Hattiesburg Saturday morning in the presence of the family and a large
gathering of family friends, and immediately afterward they left with
the body for Franklinton where the service was continued at 3:00 p.m.
at Ellis cemetery by the local ministers and her former pastor from
Hattiesburg, and where in the presence of her large circle of
appreciative friends here, her body was laid to rest by the side of her
husband and their only son John Cozine. A beautiful tribute was paid in
a short eulogy delivered at the grave by Senator Lowery M. Love of
Mississippi, who knew the intimate home life of the departed friend and
spoke feelingly of the beauty and usefulness of that excellent life.
Mrs. Cozine was 80 years of age and is survived by three daughters Mrs.
A. L. George of Teague, Tex., Mrs. John M. Love, Franklinton, and Mrs.
F. T. Myers of Hattiesburg, and by eight grand children. Five of the
grand children are orphans and Grandmother Cozine was a strong
influence in the lives of each, as at least a portion of their training
was in the Love home where she actively assisted in their guidance.
The eldest of the grandsons is Captain Jack Cozine of Atlanta, Ga., who
made a splendid record in active duty across seas in the late war,
being one of the youngest captains in service. He received his
captain's commission at the age of 22. Cal(l)away Cozine at Mississippi
A and M College, is the younger brother and Inez Cozine, a sister is
now in Texas though a great part of her life has been spent here in the
Love home; John Cozine Broach of Mississippi is in the Navy, is an
Annapolis graduate and stationed in the Panama Canal Zone on the U.S.S.
Rochester, and his younger brother, Claude Broach who spent much of his
time here, and is now at Mississippi A and M; Mary Love only child of
Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Love; Billie George, only child of Mrs. A.L. George
at Teague, Tex., and Emily Myers only child of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Myers
of Hattiesburg. She is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Minnie George of
El Paso, Tex. In the funeral cortege driving over from Hattiesburg
Saturday were Mr. and Mrs. F. T. Myers and Mr. and Mrs. M.P.L. Love and
Rev. Geo. R. Whipple of Hattiesburg, and Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Love of
Kiln, Miss., Mrs. Frank Myers remaining over here for the week with her
sister, Mrs. Love and family.
