Ray and family suffered through some hard times as they were victims of a vicious tornado which hit Washington July 4, 1932.  They owned a grocery store which they were planning to sell but the store was destroyed by the tornado before the papers were signed.  They also lost their home as they had mortgaged it to buy the store.
Later, Roy and Clara moved to Cloud County, where they farmed, eventually buying their own farm south of Jamestown where they lived until they retired and moved in to Concordia.
After Clara died on June 15, 1976, Ray married Mildred Baker Elliott.  Mildred had been a high school classmate of Ray so they had known one another most of their lives.  Mildred had also lost her first husband, Andrew Elliott.
In notes Ray wrote for Washington County historical society:
The mail was brought to Throop (a small village with church, store, and few houses) in 1900 where we picked it up.  Later, rural routes were established.  The first telephones with the handcrank came in before 1910.  We've were among the first and were on the Linn system.  In those days if you wanted to advertise some event or give a fire alarm you called Central (operator) who could connect all lines on the system and announce the event or alarm.
In 1907 a tornado struck the neighborhood destroying barns and some houses.  The storm started near Strawberry and traveled northeast.  I was 10 years old at the time, so don't remember where it went from our place.  Most of the buildings were destroyed except for the house.  Thirty-eight years later a  much fiercer tornado hit the area again taking all of the buildings on the farm exce the house and silo.  Glenn Elliott owned the farm by then.
Homes and villages no longer standing are Enosdale, Throop and Strawberry.  I know at least 20 homes in a 4 square-mile area from Diamond Center north to Enosdale, west to Throop and south to 148 highway are gone.  Add another mile north and west and I can count at least 10 more building sites gone.  This was just in the 40 years that I've gone from Washington County.

Clara was well liked among her friends with the reputation of quietly doing good for others in many ways.  She was very knowledgeable about many things and was a history buff.
Clara attended normal school in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and taught school in Buffalo, Oklahoma for a year before the family moved back to Washington County, Kansas.  She then attended high school there as a senior and graduated from Washington high school.  She taught school before her marriage and again during World War II she renewed her license and taught at two different rural schools in Cloud County during those years.
Clara and Ray were members of the United Methodist church where ever they lived.  Clara's parents, E. E. and Harriet Janeway, were of Quaker background and were members of the Quaker church near Haddam, Kansas, when Clara was born.

Obituary

ESTALENE HARRIET COZINE HARRINGTON
Estalene Harriet Cozine Harrington was born on St. Patricks Day, 1923. She died Nov. 11, 2011. St. Patricks Day was the perfect day for a redheaded baby to be born. On her 70th birthday she was in a pub in Kilkenny, Ireland . . . fitting right in with her still beautiful hair.
Her parents were Ray and Clara Estalene Janeway Cozine of Washington, Kan. She had one brother, Elbert Cozine. All predeceased her.
She married Loren Harrington in New Hope Wesleyan Church in 1941. Dad died in 1990. Four children were born and all survive: Dr. Richard Harrington (Cheri) of Chandler, Okla.; Cheryl Harrington (Leon Houghton) of Concordia, Kan.; David Harrington (Mary Anne) of Guymon, Okla.; Roc Harrington (Hadas) of Concordia, Kan.
Grandchildren are Dr. Amy Gibson Nitza, Heidi Gibson Cripe, Will Gibson; Angela Harrington Pueblo, Derek Harrington; Molly Harrington Scott, Neal Harrington; Rae Harrington Neigebauer; stepgrandchildren: Brenna Payne, Brandi Sutton, Joe Solomon Harrington, Connie Semahar Harrington; Kenny Sills and Corey Sills. She was loved by many great-grandchildren and great-stepgrandchildren. She never treated anyone differently from the rest as they were all her grandkids of the heart.
Nieces Dr. Charlene Harrington and Rita Harrington were always very important in her life as was her only surviving nephew, Mark Cozine. She also is survived by two sisters-in-law, Ruby Meats Harrington and Ruth Palmquist Cozine.
Our mother was a strong, hardworking farm wife until the illness of our dad. She also worked many years at St. Joseph Hospital as a nursing assistant, ward clerk and Psych Tech, preferring to work the 11-7 night shift. After their farm sale they moved to a small house in Concordia.
She enjoyed the remaining years of her life involved in church and community affairs. She had very strong beliefs and enjoyed sharing them with others in the many letters to the editor that she had published. She was aware that many did not share those beliefs, but that did not matter to her. Her passion was writing and she wrote many articles on many topics. She also was an excellent seamstress and an avid reader. Those activities slowed as her eyesight failed. While we kids were at home she volunteered as a 4-H leader, Sunday School teacher, member of Farm Bureau and extension boards. She traveled worldwide during the 1990s. She always took many pictures and shared many of those trips with others in the community.
Along with her parents, husband and brother she was predeceased by son-in-law, Dean Gibson, daughter-in-law, Connie Hayden Harrington, nephew Tim Cozine, niece Debra Harrington and stepgrandson Jeff Sills.
Our mother was the epic independent woman who always took full responsibility of her life and her actions. She was proud of her life as are we! We will miss her!
Services will be at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 16, at the First Presbyterian Church, Concordia, with Pastor Denise Group and Joe Detrixhe officiating. Burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia.
A social time for family and friends will be at the church fellowship hall following the burial.
