MOUNTAIN HOME CEMETERY is located in Northeast Alabama, Dekalb County on AL Highway 117 ~ County Road 729 on Sand Mountain. It is approximately four miles from I-59 at Hwy 117 exit North and approximately four miles South of Ider, AL, and in the Henagar, AL 35978 mail district)
This cemetery was created in the late 1800s near the east side of Sand Mountain and provides a great view of Lookout Mountain. It was started as the cemetery for the Chestnut Grove Baptist Church which is about two miles North of the cemetery; however, the name was changed to Mountain Home Cemetery in the early 1930s when a meeting house was built. Timber was donated for the meeting house and Ails Columbus Crabtree donated the use of his sawmill to cut and saw all of the lumber necessary for the structure.
It is used as a community meeting place, voting precinct, various singing and religious events, and for the cemetery Memorial Service which is held on the Sunday preceding the National Memorial Holiday on Monday. The business meeting precedes the memorial service and donations are accepted for the cemetery trust fund which is administered by a cemetery/building committee of seven. Jerome Crabtree, Quentin Crabtree and Charles Crabtree serve on this Committee. Mary Elizabeth Crabtree and Marcella Crabtree-Gann serve as Treasurer and Secretary of the Committee.
All of the Crabtrees in this cemetery, other than the female spouse, are the descendents of William Crabtree of Franklin County, TN and two of his sons--Martin and George Washington--who moved their families to Dekalb County, AL after it was created out of the former Cherokee Indian Territory. George's sixth child was born in Dekalb County, AL on August 13, 1850. Martin bought his first forty acres of land in Dekalb County in 1853.
