Andrew Alexander Hendry, son of James Madison Hendry and Martha Frances Wingate, was born September 7, 1904 Sandy, Manatee County, Florida and died June 2, 1968, Bradenton, Manatee County, Florida. His given names became inverted so he became Alexander Andrew, but he was known as "Alex."

Ordained in 1949 as a Baptist minister at Orient Baptist Church, Tampa, Florida, Alex was called as the pastor of Bethany Baptist Church on September 4, 1949 and served until September 30, 1951 and again June 8 to September 7, 1958. Other churches he pastored included Limestone, Dry Prairie, Myakka City, Clewiston, and Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church at Pine Level, which he served for the last nine years of his life. He was living at Myakka City at his demise.

Alex married (1) on December 19, 1925, Altha Duncan, daughter of Jack Z. T. Duncan and Sarah Jane Stephens. Altha was born July 8, 1910, New Zion community, Ona, Florida; died August 13, 1946, Tampa, Hillsborough County, Florida. He married 2) May 9, 1947 in Hillsborough County, Florida, Mattie Opal DuBose, born November 11, 1916, Starke, Florida; died July 3, 1994, Sarasota, Sarasota County, Florida. Opal married (2) May 7, 1972 in Manatee County, Florida, Arie Lee Roberts, son of Bill and Ida Roberts. Arie was born ca. 1910; died April 1982, Palatka, Florida. Rev. Alex Hendry, Altha and Opal are buried in are buried in New Zion Cemetery, Ona, Hardee County, Florida. Also buried in New Zion Cemetery are two infant sons of Alex and Altha, Alex Jr. and Moses.

Funeral notice of Mrs. Alex Hendry from The Tampa Morning Tribune, August 15, 1946:
�Hendry, Mrs. Alex�Funeral services for Mrs. Alex Hendry, of Tampa, Fla., who passed away in a hospital last night, will be held at the New Zion Church Thursday afternoon at 3 P. M. The Rev. R. P. Tomlinson will be in charge of services. Interment will be in New Zion Cemetery. Coker Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.�

Obituary of Rev. Alex Hendry from an unidentified newspaper of June 3, 1968:
�Myakka City � Rev. Alex Hendry, 63, lifelong resident of this area, died yesterday in Bradenton Memorial Hospital. He was presently serving as pastor of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church at Pine Level and had previously pastored churches at Limestone, Dry Prairie, Myakka City, Bethany and Clewiston. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Opal Dubose Hendry; two daughters, Mrs. Gloria McGinnis of Brandon, and Miss Alice Fay Hendry, Myakka; three sons, Rev. A. O. Hendry of Wauchula, Earl Hendry of Tampa and Bruce Hendry of Arcadia; three sisters, Mrs. Ellen Hendry of Ellenton, Mrs. Bidie Phillips of Bradenton and Mrs. Anne Stone of Bowling Green; and two brothers, Jim Hendry of Clewiston and the Rev. J. N. Hendry Sr. of Wauchula.�

Obituary of Mattie Opal Hendry Roberts, The Herald-Advocate (Wauchula, Fla.), July 7, 1994:
�Mattie Opal Hendry Roberts, 77, of Myakka City, died Sunday, July 3, 19994, at East Manor Care Center in Sarasota.
�Born in Starke, she was a lifelong resident of Manatee County and a member of Bethany Baptist Church. She was a homemaker.
�Survivors are four daughters, Alice Moye of Myakka City, Gloria McGinnis of Brandon, Margaret Gregory of Palatka and Nelda Minor of Vermont; four sons, the Rev. A. O. Hendry and Bruce C. Hendry of Myakka City, Earl L. Hendry of Tampa and Terry Roberts of Sanford; one sister, Elizabeth Stanley of Pinellas Park; one brother, Jack DuBose of Panama City; numerous grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
�Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 6, at 1 p.m. at New Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. A. O. Hendry and the Rev. Steve Aaron officiating. Burial was in New Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.
�Memorial contributions may be made to Bethany Baptist Church Building Fund, Rt. 1, Box 50, Myakka City, FL 34251.�

1. Audrey Otis (A.O.) Hendry, born Feb. 12, 1928; married on Dec. 24, 1946 Gertrude Stewart. A. O., ordained in 1961, is a Baptist minister who has served numerous churches including Bethany Baptist Church, which he last pastored.
2. Earl Louis "Bo" Hendry, born Oct. 7, 1929; married on Aug. 6, 1948 Dorothy Kathleen Minton.
3. Gloria LaForie Hendry, born May 25, 1931; married on March 11, 1950 Charles Lindberg McGinnis.
4. Bruce Coleman �Buddy� Hendry, born Aug. 4, 1935; died June 9, 2005, Palmetto, FL; buried Bethany Baptist Cemetery; married (1) Feb. 4, 1953 Lillian May Tate; div.; (2) Linda Lanier Cole.
