Officers


Lt. & Capt. James Dopson Green - Born Oct. 6, 1823, Anderson Co., South Carolina. In Hillsborough Co., Fla. on July 11, 1849, he married Eliza Whidden, daughter of Wllloughby and Eliza (Pennington) Whidden. The Greens were living in the Simmons Hammock settlement in 1850 and settled at now Fort Green (named for him in 1856), Manatee (now Hardee) Co. in 1854.
In March 7, 1864, Green, his draft exemption repealed, left his Fort Green home and went to Fort Myers. He was commissioned 1st Lieutenant and on May 26, 1864 received a provisional commission as Capt. of the 2nd Florida. In Sept. 1864 Green was denied a promotion to Major. In late 1864, Capt. Green's military service abruptly ended with arrest and confinement after he and Lt. William McCullough of Co. A made charges against officers, including, Capt. J. W. Childs. At Cedar Keys on April 15, 1865, he appealed to the President and the Secretary of War. On March 27, 1866 and March 13 ,1872, the War Department approved his service as 1st Lieutenant, Company B, 2d Florida Cavalry to date May 1 to 26, May 1864, and as Captain, Company B, May 26, 1864 to Feb. 3, 1865 and March 26, 1865 to April 12, 1865.
Following the Civil War and during Reconstruction, Capt. Green, a member of the Republican Party, represented Manatee County in the Oct. 1865 state constitutional convention and in the State Assembly in the sessions of 1865 (he resigned in the summer of 1866 and was succeeded in October by his brother-in-law John W. Whidden, a former Confederate officer), 1868, 1869, and 1870. Green died April 8, 1886 and was buried in Pine Level Campground Cemetery, Pine Level, Fla.


1st Lt. John Wesley Platt - A son of John Platt (1793-1874) and Alice Blackshear Platt (1807-1891), he was born Dec. 26, 1833, Lowndes Co., Ga. In the 1840s the family moved to North Florida, then to Hernando Co. before 1852, and in 1855 to Lily, Manatee (now Hardee) Co., Fla. He enlisted as 1st Lt, Co. B, May 26, 1864 at Fort Myers and was dishonorably discharged Feb. 28, 1865 at Fort Myers. After the war, the U. S. War Department revoked his dishonorable discharge and discharged him Jan. 19, 1865. He died Jan. 6, 1920. On July 7, 1859, he had married Mary Jane Jackson. See “John Platt 1793-1874, ” South Florida Pioneers 29/30 (July/Oct. 1981) pp. 19-21.

2nd Lt. Seth Stephens - Born 1845, he enlisted on Aug. 25, 1862 in Co. H, 110th New York Volunteers at Oswego. He was appointed corporal on Sept. 2, 1862 and sergeant on Nov. 14, 1863. At Cedar Key on Feb. 1, 1865, he was appointed 2nd Lt. of Co. B and was mustered out Nov. 29, 1865

2nd Lt. William J. Dillon - He was assigned to duty on May 28, 1864, but deserted to the CSA in mid-1864.


Noncommissioned Officers

Henry Green Arnold - Born 1825, Montgomery Co., Ga., he, a refugee from the Confederacy, enlisted Jan. 29, 1864 at Fort Myers, was promoted to corporal March 26, 1864, quartermaster sergeant June 29, 1864. He died of diarrhea on Jan. 30, 1865 at Fort Myers.

David J. W. Boney - Born Jan. 14, 1815, Duplin Co., NC, he served in 1841 in 2nd Seminole War. In the mid-1840s, he moved to Hillsborough Co., Fla. He married on Oct. 8, 1846 Lydia A. Whidden, b. Sept. 27, 1831, d.o. Maxfield & Sophia (Crews) Whidden, died Jan. 23, 1910, lived Zolfo Springs. David died May 4, 1889 at Popash.
About 1858 Boney moved to Ft. Hartsuff. 1860 selected county commissioner. On Apr. 20, 1864 he enrolled at Fort Myers under Capt. James D. Green, promoted to 1st corporal May 28, 1864. He was home on sick furlough when war ended 1865. In 1870 in township, 34 in Popash area along with Nathan Lowe. He died May 4, 1889, Popash. See “David J. W. John Milledge (Milliage) Brannen - He first served in Co. K, 8th Fla. Inf., CSA. He enlisted Feb. 24, 1864 at Fort Myers by Capt. R. A. Graffe, Rank of 1st Sergeant.

Reuben Carlton - Born Dec. 16, 1842, Thomas Co., Ga., son of Daniel Wilson and Sallie Ann (Murphy) Carlton, he moved with his parents in the 1840s to Alachua or Marion County, Florida and then to the Alafia Settlement in Hillsborough County, Florida, being enumerated with his family in the 1850 census. Before 1855, they had relocated to Fort Meade and later to Troublesome Creek in Manatee (now Hardee) County, Fla.
Reuben enlisted on April 10, 1862 as a private in Co. E, 7th Florida Infantry. Pvt. Carlton appears on company muster rolls from April 1862 to February 1864. Due to the humiliating mistreatment by Confederate agents of his father Daniel, Reuben deserted Co. E. At Fort Myers on May 28, 1864, Reuben was enrolled as a private by Capt. Henry A. Crane in Co. B, 2nd Florida Cavalry. Co. B records described Reuben as: "Born in Thomas County, Georgia; age 23; refugee from Confederacy; grey eyes; light hair; dark complexion; 5 feet 9 inches; promoted to 5th Sgt. on June 29, 1864." He was reported "on roll to June 30/64. Sergt. present -Same to Aug. 31, 1865 Sept. & Oct. 65, not on file." Sergeant Carlton was mustered out with his company Nov. 29, 1865, Tallahassee. .
After the war, Reuben settled at Fort Pierce where the Carltons were prominent cattlemen. Reuben Carlton died Sept. 12, 1917, Fort Pierce, St. Lucie County, with burial in the Carlton Cemetery, about ten miles west of Fort Pierce, Fla.

Calvin C. Collier - Born June 22, 1842/3, Dooly Co., Ga., son of John and Caroline (Hall) Collier, he, a refugee from the Confederacy, enlisted May 28, 1864 at Fort Myers by Capt. Bartholf, promoted to corporal on March 1, 1865, mustered out Nov. 29, 1865 at Tallahassee. He married Katie Parnell & Beulah Whidden Sparkman. He died Aug. 17, 1922, buried Pleasant Gardens Cem., Lake Wales. See Kyle S. VanLandingham , “John Collier c1815/24-1896,” South Florida Pioneers 15/16 (Jan./April 1978), pp. 22-24.

George Dishong - Born Gwinett Co., Ga in 1846, he, a refugee from the Confederacy, enlisted April 26, 1864 at Key West by Lt. Pretz, promoted to corporal on April 1, 1865. He was mustered out Nov 29, 1865, Tallahassee.

Benjamin F. Duncan - Born 1839 Twiggs Co., Ga., he, a refugee from the Confederacy, enlisted April 16, 1864 at Fort Myers and was appointed corporal on Aug. 13, 1864. He died of diarrhea Feb. 2, 1865 at Fort Myers. According to Clyde S. Stephens, Stephens Ancestors and Pioneer Relatives, July 1982, p. 51, Charity Ann Stephens (born March 21, 1844 Ramer, Ala.; died April 4, 1926, Ona, Fla.) married on August 23, 1862 in Hernando Co., Fla. Benjamin Franklin Duncan (1823- Feb. 2, 1865, Fort Myers), who served from April 16, 1864 to Feb. 2, 1865 in Co. B, 2nd Fla., U.S.A.

Marvel M. Edwards - Born 1831, Thomas Co., Ga., he enlisted May 5, 1864 at Key West by Lt. Pretz, appointed 4th Sergeant on May 28, 1864.

James Madison Hendry - Born July 23, 1839, Lowndes Co., Ga., he moved with his parents, Robert & Zilla Ann (Moody) Hendry to Hamilton Co., Fla. in 1848. After June 1860, he and his wife, Mary Jane (Payne) Hendry, moved to Polk Co.
He enlisted as a private at Fort Meade, Fla. on May 4, 1862 in Co. E, 7th Florida Infantry, CSA, which was attached to the Army of Tennessee. At Knoxville on May 30, 1863 by order of General Mauray, he was granted a medical discharge.
He was enlisted by Capt. J. D. Green on June 15, 1864 at Fort Myers, Florida as a private in Co. B. He was promoted to corporal March 1, 1865. He was furloughed Sept. 28, 1865 and honorably discharged Nov. 29, 1865 at Tallahassee, Fla.
He married (2) Martha Frances Wingate, daughter of John Hiram Wingate He died April 14, 1922, buried New Zion Cemetery, Ona, Fla.

John J. Horton - Born 1844, Darlington Co., SC, he enlisted Mar. 8, 1864 at Key West by Capt. Brown and was appointed corporal on June 29, 1864. He was AWOL in mid-1865 and reduced to ranks. He was discharged Nov. 29, 1865, Tallahassee.

William Lowe - Born Colquit Co. Ga., he, a refugee from Confederacy, enlisted on March 18, 1864 at Fort Myers by Capt. Crane and appeared as a member of Co. B from mid-1864. He was appointed corporal and was mustered out Nov. 29, 1865 at Tallahassee. He, according to Hartman and Coles, is buried Friendship Cemetery, Zolfo Springs, Fla.

Luther A. Martin - Born Thomas Co., Ga., he, a refugee from the Confederacy, enlisted on April 20, 1864 at Key West. He was appointed corporal on June 29, 1864 and mustered out on Nov. 29, 1865, Tallahassee.

Edward J. Murphy - Born 1844 in Jefferson Co., AR, he, a refugee from the Confederacy, enlisted on May 5, 1864 at Key West by Lt. Pretz. He was appointed corporal on June 29, 1864 and was m. o. Nov. 29, 1865 at Tallahassee.

Samuel J. Pearce - Born 1824, he, a refugee from the Confederacy, was enlisted May 5, 1864 at Key West by Lt. Pretz and was promoted to commissary sergeant on May 28, 1864, then quartermaster sergeant on March 1, 1865. He was m.o. Nov. 29, 1865 at Tallahassee.

William R. Smith - Born 1840, Fla., he was enlisted in Co. A on Feb. 23, 1864 at Key West by Capt. Brown, but appeared as a member of Co. B in mid-1864. Promoted to corporal on June 29, 1864, he was mustered out on Nov. 29, 1865, Tallahassee. He is buried in the Smith Cem., Dade City, Fla. See also Co. A.

James H. Stephens - Born 1843, Montgomery Co., Ala., he, a refugee from the Confederacy, was enlisted in Co. A on April 11, 1864 at Key West by Lt. Pretz, but appeared as a member of Co. B in mid-1864. He was appointed commissary sergeant on March 1, 1865 and was mustered out Nov. 29, 1865 at Tallahassee.

Thomas L. Thigpin - Born Laurens Co., Ga. in 1812; he prior to 1856 moved to Manatee Co. He enrolled April 15, 1864 at Ft. Myers as a private, appointed corporal on May 28, 1864, corporal per roll of June 30, 1864; m.o. Nov. 29, 1865. After the war, he lived at Pine Level. He died July 30, 1908, Sarasota. Edward Whidden - Born 1843, Ware Co., Ga., he, a refugee from the Confederacy, was enlisted by Lt. Myers on Dec. 20, 1863 at New Zeppa Island, was appointed corporal Feb. 8, 1864 and was promoted 2nd Sgt May 28, 1864. He was furloughed Sept. 28, 1865 and mustered out at Tallahassee on Nov. 29, 1865.

Maxwell Whidden - Born April 18, 1833, Columbia Co., Fla., son Willoughby & Eliza (Pennington) Whidden, he was living at Fort Hartsuff when he enlisted April 10, 1862 in Co. E, 7th Fla. Inf., CSA. He enrolled on April 20, 1864 in Co. B, 2nd Fla. Cav., enrolled April 20, 1864 and served as a sergeant, mustered out Nov. 29, 1865. He died April 27, 1887, Nocatee. He enrolled March 16, 1865 at Punta Rassa; m.o. Nov. 29, 1865. He married on Feb. 9, 1871 Mary Frances Ivey, daughter of Francis A. Ivey. He died May 16, 1921 at Limestone, buried Lily Cemetery. William J. Campbell - Born Oct. 18, 1819, Green Co., Ky., he, a refugee from the Confederacy, enlisted June 15, 1864 at Fort Myers by Capt. Green, mustered out Nov. 29, 1865, Tallahassee. He died Aug. 15, 1886, buried Oaklawn Cem., Tampa.

Albert Carlton - Born May 9, 1845, Alachua or Marion Co., Fla., son of Daniel Wilson and Sallie Ann (Murphy) Carlton, he enlisted on June 15, 1864 at Fort Myers, discharged Nov. 29, 1865. He died Sept. 1, 1925, buried Wauchula Cem. He was the father of Doyle Elam Carlton, who served as Governor of Florida from 1929-33.

John W. Daniels - Born 1824/1830, Ala., he, a refugee from the Confederacy, enlisted May 29, 1864 at Fort Myers by Capt. Green, detached service on scout to Peas Creek June 15, 1864. He was mustered out Nov 29, 1865, Tallahassee. He died June 27, 1914, buried Mt. Olive Cem., Pierce, Polk Co., Fla.

Lewis Dishong - Born Orange Co., North Carolina ca. 1824, he, a refugee from the Confederacy, enlisted June 17, 1864 at Fort Myers by Capt. Green. He was mustered out Nov 29, 1865, Tallahassee.

Bryant Duncan - He enlisted on April 16, 1864 at Fort Myers, but was dropped after June
1864.

John Furgerson - Born 1840, Newcastle, England, he enlisted March 18, 1865 at Punta Rassa, mustered out Nov. 29, 1865, Tallahassee, Fla.

Robert H. Furgerson - Born 1827, Twiggs Co., Ga., he enlisted on July 6, 1864 at Key West by Lt. Pretz, mustered out Nov. 29, 1865, Tallahassee, Fla.

John A. Geiger - Born 1820, Bulloch Co., Ga., he, a refugee from the Confederacy, enlisted on April 16, 1864 at Fort Myers by Capt. Crane, mustered out Nov. 29, 1865, Tallahassee, Fla. He died in 1893, buried Geiger Cemetery, Zephyrhills, Fla.

Samuel Godwin - Born 1831 Ware Co., Ga., he enlisted on April 11, 1864 at Key West by Lt. Pretz, Co. A; "Supposed to be captured". ...transferred to Co. B in mid 1864. He was captured May 28, 1864 and discharged June 24, 1865.

John C. Green - Born 1820, Camden Co., Ga., he, a refugee from the Confederacy, enlisted on April 16, 1864 at Fort Myers by Capt. Crane. He died of diarrhea on June 6, 1865 at Cedar Key.

Streety Ashford Hair - Born Feb. 1847, Columbia Co., Fla., he moved with his parents, William Calvin & Sarah Jane (Parker) Hair, prior to 1860 to Fort Hartsuff, Fla. He enlisted on May 22, 1864 at Fort Myers by Capt. Bartholf, discharged Nov. 29, 1865. He married on Aug. 27, 1866 Lydia Bea Crews, daughter of Dempsey Dubois & Piety (Collier) Crews. He died Feb. 23, 1908 Fort Drum, Fla. where he’d moved ca. 1881.

William N. Hair - Born ca 1845 Columbia Co., Fla., he moved with his parents, William Calvin & Sarah Jane (Parker) Hair, prior to 1860 to Fort Hartsuff, Fla. He enlisted in Co. E, Eighth Fla. Infantry, CSA on May 14, 1862 and was wounded Chancellorsville on May 4, 1863. He enlisted in Co. B on May 22, 1864 at Fort Myers, mustered out Nov. 29, 1865. He married Laura Whidden, d.o. Eli Perry & Lavenia (Platt) Whidden on Aug. 10, 1870. He died July 7, 1913 DeSoto Co., Fla.; See Virginia Westergard & Kyle VanLandingham, Parker and Blount in Florida, p. 28.
        
Durham Hancock - He enlisted April 11, 1864 at Key West by Lt. Pretz. He formerly served in Co. C, 9th Fla. Inf., CSA.

John D. Hancock - He enlisted Feb. 24, 1865 at Fort Myers by Lt. Stevens. He died of pneumonia on May 26, 1865 at Cedar Key.

William Hart - Born 1820, Chester Co., Pa., he, a refugee from the Confederacy, enlisted May 12, 1864 at Fort Myers by Capt. Green, mustered out Nov. 29, 1865, Tallahassee.

Archibald William Hendry - Born Jan. 20, 1846, Lowndes Co., Ga., he was a son of John Hendry, Jr.. He enlisted on May 15, 1864 at Fort Myers in Co. B, m.o. Nov. 29, 1865. He died June 1, 1920, Fort Green.

Charles Hendry - Born Jan. 12, 1846, Thomas Co., Ga., he was a son of Robert & Zilla Ann (Moody) Hendry, with whom he moved to Hamilton Co., Fla. in 1848 and Fort Green, Fla. in Dec. 1861. On June 15, 1864 at Fort Myers, he enlisted in Co. B, discharged Nov. 29, 1865. He married Sophia Whidden, daughter of Willoughby & Eliza (Pennington) Whidden. Charles died Dec. 11, 1886, Joshua Creek, Fla.

Robert Calvin Hendry - Born Feb. 23, 1849, Jasper, Fla., he moved with his parents, Robert and Zilla Ann (Moody) Hendry in Dec. 1861 to Fort Green. He enlisted at Fort Myers on Jan. 14, 1865 in Co. B, discharged Nov. 29, 1865, Tallahassee. He married on Jan. 19, 1868 Nancy Virginia McEwen. He died April 3, 1904, buried in the Joshua Creek Cem., Arcadia.

William Henry H. Hernden - Born 1844, Ware Co., Ga., he, a refugee from the Confederacy, enlisted June 4, 1864 at Fort Myers, deserted Aug. 9, 1864 at Fort Myers.

Simeon Hollingsworth - Jacob Simeon Hollingsworth, son of Stephen and Perlina (Fulford) Hollingsworth, was born Oct. 23, 1847, Hillsborough Co., Fla. He enlisted Feb. 24, 1865 at Fort Myers by Lt. Stevens and was discharged for disability in mid to late 1865. He married on Aug. 18, 1866 Virginia Hagan. He died Feb. 12, 1938. Thomas B. Jackson - Born 1829, Upson Co., Ga., he, a refugee from the Confederacy, enlisted May 28, 1864 at Fort Myers by Capt. Crane. He was mustered out Nov. 29, 1865, Tallahassee.

Franklin Link - Born 1824, Lancaster Co., SC, he, a refugee from the Confederacy, enlisted May 5, 1864 at Key West by Lt. Pretz. He deserted Nov. 2, 1864, but returned voluntarily Feb. 2, 1865. He was m. o. Nov. 29, 1865, Tallahassee.

Henry Locklear - He enlisted Aug. 13, 1864 at Cedar Key by Lt. Pretz; also served in Co. F, 2nd Fla. Cav., USA.

William Henry Lockear - Born near Lake City, Fla. on Nov. 26, 1845, prior to 1860 he moved to Lafayette Co. He enrolled May 2, 1864 at Cedar Keys as private Co. F, 2nd Fla. Cav., USA, mustered in May 20. On Feb. 2, 1865 he was transferred Co. B., discharged Nov. 29, 1865. He died March 15, 1923, buried Bethany Cem., Myakka City. Jesse Long - Born 1829, Duval Co., he enlisted March 1, 1864 at Key West by Capt. Brown, but deserted March 28, 1865 at Fort Myers. After war’s end, he was listed as being officially discharged March 28, 1865.

John Lowe - Born 1842, Duval Co., he, a refugee from the Confederacy, enlisted May 13, 1864 at Fort Myers by Capt. Green, m.o. Nov. 29, 1865, Tallahassee.

Nathan Lowe - Born ca. 1846, Colquit Co. Ga., he, a refugee from Confederacy, enlisted March 18, 1864 at Fort Myers by Capt. Green and appeared as a member of Co. B from mid-1864. He was furloughed Sept. 28, 1865 and was mustered out Nov. 29, 1865 at Tallahassee. He died Sept. 16, 1904, age 58 years, and is buried in Friendship Cemetery, Zolfo Springs, Fla. His wife, Sophie Boney Lowe (1847-1918) was the daughter of David J. W. & Lydia (Whidden) Boney.

Henry Messer - Born 1843, Dale Co., Fla., he, a refugee from the Confederacy, enlisted on March 18, 1864 at Fort Myers by Capt. Crane. He was m. o. Nov. 29, 1865, Tallahassee.

Joel Messer - Born 1845, Calhoun Co., Fla., he, a refugee from the Confederacy, enlisted May 12, 1864 at Fort Myers by Capt. Green, m.o. Nov. 29, 1865, Tallahassee.

George Clinton Mizell - Born July 20, 1847, Alachua Co., Fla., he, a refugee from the Confederacy, enlisted on April 15, 1864 at Fort Myers by Capt. Crane, m.o. Nov. 29, 1865. He married Mary "Polly" Angeline Platt, daughter of John & Alice Blackshear Platt. He died June 25, 1895, buried Pine Level Campground Cem. John Morgan, Jr. - He was enlisted on May 2, 1864 at Cedar Keys by Lt. Hunter. He also served in Co. F 2nd Fla. Cav., USA.

Alexander Odum - He enlisted May 16, 1864 at Key West by Lt. Pretz. He also served in Co. F, 2nd Fla. Cav., USA.

David Osburn - He enlisted April 6, 1864 at Key West by Lt. Pretz. He had served in Co. C, 9th Fla. Inf.

William L. Osburn - Born 1842/45, Madison Co., Fla. he, a refugee from the Confederacy, enlisted on May 5, 1864 at Key West by Lt. Pretz, and was m. o. Nov. 29, 1865 at Tallahassee.

John J. Parker - Born 1846, Russel Co., Ala., he enlisted on March 8, 1864 at Key West, was transferred to Co. B in mid-1864, m. o. Nov. 29, 1865, Tallahassee. See Co. A.

Randal H. Pearson - He enlisted May 2, 1864 at Cedar Key by Lt. Hunter. He also served in Co. F, 2nd Fla. Cav., USA.

Timothy Peterson - Born 1829, Bulloch Co., Ga., he, a refugee from the Confederacy, was enlisted by Lt. Pretz on April 7, 1864 at Key West, but appeared as a member of Co. B in mid-1864, m. o. Nov. 29, 1865, Tallahassee. See Co. B.

Daniel W. Pingston - He enlisted May 5, 1864 at Key West by Lt. Pretz. He had served in Co. C, 9th Fla. Inf.

Joshua Arron Platt - Born June 20, 1828, Lowndes Co., Ga., he was a son of John and Alice (Blackshear) Platt. In late 1855, the family moved to Lily, Manatee (now Hardee) Co., Fla. He was enlisted by Capt. Crane on March. 20, 1864 at Peas Creek, mustered out Nov. 29, 1865 at Tallahassee. Joshua died April 28, 1899. He had married (1) Martha Bates; (2) Eliza Ann Thigpen, April 17, 1881. See “John Platt 1793-1874, ” South Florida Pioneers 29/30 (July/Oct. 1981) pp. 19-21.

Lewis Blackshear Platt - Born Oct. 6, 1829, Lowndes Co., Ga., he was a son of John and Alice (Blackshear) Platt. In late 1855, the family moved to Lily, Manatee (now Hardee) Co., Fla. He first served in Co. B, 9th Fla. Inf. Joshua A. Platt in an affidavit for his brother's pension in 1892 stated, "Lewis B. Platt was forced into the Confederate Army during the late Civil War by conscription against his own wishes and that as soon as he possiably could he left the Confederate Army and joined the Union and that I know of, several men who were shot and killed for refusing to go into service when conscripted and a man who was conscripted and refused to go into the service was in danger of losing his life." He was enlisted on March 18, 1864 at Fort Myers by Capt. Crane, mustered out Nov. 29, 1865, Tallahassee. He lived at Denaud 1902, Immokalee 1907. He died July 18, 1911, buried Brown Cem., Immokalee. On Oct. 22, 1852, he had married Nancy Barber (or Barker). See “Lewis Blackshear Platt 1829-1911, ” South Florida Pioneers 47/48 (Jan./Apr. 1986), pp. 11-12.

Nathan Cicero Platt - Born Feb. 14, 1845, Santa Fe River, Fla., he was a son of John and Alice (Blackshear) Platt. In late 1855, the family moved to Lily, Manatee (now Hardee) Co., Fla. Nathan in an affidavit for James M. Bates stated in part, "I know he and myself laid out in the woods to keep the Confederates from capturing us and that finally we made a boat and got to Fort Myers in the Union lines and received the protection of the garrison at that place.” (See John M. Bates, George C. Mizell, Nathan C. Platt to Robert S. Griffith, January 18, 1879, Southern Claims Commission, RG 217, Case files 1877-83, Box 123.) Nathan, a refugee from the Confederacy, was enlisted on April 18, 1864 at Fort Myers by Capt. Crane. He was mustered out Nov. 29, 1865. He died May 13, 1930. On Oct. 1, 1868, he had married Florida (Hagan) McDonald. See “John Platt 1793-1874, ” South Florida Pioneers 29/30 (July/Oct. 1981) pp. 19-21.

Thomas J. Prine - Born 1847/49, he enlisted on Feb. 24, 1864 at Fort Myers by Lt. Stevens, m. o. Nov. 29, 1865, Tallahassee. He died March 9, 1920, buried Old Elam Cem., Fort Meade, Fla.

James Rich - Born 1829, Randolph Co., Ga. he, a refugee from the Confederacy, was enlisted Oct. 24, 1864 at Fort Myers by Capt. Green.

Zepheniah Rich - Born 1822, Sampson Co., NC, he, a refugee from the Confederacy, was enlisted Oct. 27, 1864 at Fort Myers and died of disease on Aug. 28, 1865 at Monticello.

Alderman Simmons - Born 1837, Bulloch Co., Ga., he, a refugee from the Confederacy, was enlisted April 30, 1864 at Key West by Lt. Pretz and was m.o. Nov. 29, 1865 at Tallahassee.

Andrew Jackson Simmons - Born 1825, Duval Co., he, a refugee from the Confederacy, was enlisted Sept. 2, 1864 at Fort Myers by Capt. Crane, m. o. Nov. 29, 1865 at Tallahassee.

William Simson - Born 1835, Hamilton Co., Fla., he enlisted March 18, 1865 at Punta Rassa, m. o. Nov. 29, 1865 at Tallahassee.

Alford Sloan - Born 1837, Thomas Co., Ga., he was the oldest son of Daniel and Nancy (Lanier) Sloan, with whom he moved to Hillsborough Co. ca. 1852 and the Fort Hartsuff area by 1858. He served in Co. B, 1st Battalion, Special Cavalry, CSA. He enlisted on March 16, 1865 at Punta Rassa in Co. B, but deserted on June 28, 1865. Records note that he was a "Hen thief and a liar." After the war, he moved to Sumter Co. He died ca. 1892, place unknown. He had married (1) on Sept. 4, 1856 Cecelia Whidden, daughter of Willoughby and Eliza (Pennington) Whidden, (2) Josephine Parker. David D. Whidden - Son of Wade Hampton & Eleanor (Shepherd) Whidden, David was born Nov. 23, 1844, Thomas Co., Ga. He was enlisted on March 16, 1864 at Fort Myers by Capt. Crane, rank of private, Co. B, mustered in April 15, 1864 at Fort Myers. He died Dec. 12, 1922, buried in Friendship Cem., Zolfo Springs, Hardee Co., Fla. He married (1) Pennie Driggers, March 7, 1869; (2) Rebecca Posey, 1890. James E. Whidden - Born Oct. 15, 1845, Hillsborough Co., Fla., a son of Willoughby & Eliza (Pennington) Whidden, James E. enlisted on March 18, 1864 at Fort Myers. He was furloughed Sept. 28, 1865 and mustered out on Nov. 29, 1865 at Tallahassee. He died April 4, 1903. In Manatee Co., Fla. on Jan. 17, 1864, he married Martha Jane Carlton (1847-1933), daughter of Daniel Wilson and Sallie Ann (Murphy) Carlton. They are buried in Joshua Creek Cem., Arcadia, Fla.

William Whidden - Born June 28, 1848, Hillsborough Co., Fla., he was a son of Willoughby and Eliza (Pennington) Whidden. William Whidden enlisted on May 28, 1864 and was discharged Nov. 29, 1865 at Tallahassee. After the war, William settled in what is now known as the Oak Grove community, west of present-day Wauchula. William died on Sept. 17, 1901 and is buried in New Zion Cemetery. He married (1) Martha Howard & (2) Mollie McLeod.

Chelton Wilkerson - He enlisted Dec. 19, 186_ at Cedar Key. He also served in Co. F, 2nd Fla. Cav., USA.
