This is a copy of a letter sent to Doc. Wainscott it may assist anyone researching the Wainscotts in England. A effort to contact Mr. Ewen Wainscott resulted in notification of his death in 1995. No family records were available in Auckland N.Z. However this provides a place in England. Gene Clark 1998. ************************************************************************************* Ewen M. Wainscott, Regd. Architect PO Box 5958 Auckland, N.Z. Dear Mr. Wainscott, For some time now I have been meaning to write you to give you the benefit of what little knowledge I know of the Wainscott family. Finally my cousin Lionel has shamed me into doing something about it. It is my intention to prepare a schedule containing as much details as possible and forwarding it to you at a later date. In the meantime I shall give you a brief run down on what I know about my immediate family. My name is Ewen Martin Wainscott (Martin being my mother's maiden name). I was born at Frankton, N.Z. 8-Feb. 1920, a first generation N.Z. on my father's side. My father was Joseph Bramwell Wainscott b. Lesk, Staffordshire, Eng. In Sept 18-1888 and migrated to N.Z. on the ZONIC in 1907. My grandfather was George Wainscott b. Hereford, Herefordshire, Eng. In about 1850 and worked on the North Staffordshire R.R. until he died. The family can be traced back by the town clerk of Hereford to James Wainscott 1747 but there are no details available from that date up to my great grandfather around 1837. My grandfather George was married twice having one son William by his first wife. William resided in Leek, Staffordshire and I understand he died there about 1961. My father was one of the 2nd family and his mother was Mary Bloor. Dad was one of a family of six boys and four girls, all of which migrated to N.Z. after their father's death about 1907. For many years we all considered the name unique and we thought we were the only family of Wainscotts in existence. When I lived in England between 1945-1950 I spent some time searching through Archives in Somerset House which records all births, deaths, etc. in England. However these records only goes back to 1834 and all the peoples under the name Wainscott (about 12 in all) could be traced to Hereford and they were direct relatives of mine. It wasn't until I visited the United States in 1963 that I realized that the bulk of the family had migrated to the USA. I located Wainscotts in Seattle, San Diege, Tucson, and Dallas. Most did not know whether they were kin or not. But one thing seems significant, many seemed to think their ancestors came from Owens County, Ky. There is a place called Wainscott on Long Island USA and a hamlet called Wainscott about 3 miles south of Rochester, Kent, Eng. Apart from my own family there is little else I can give you in details, but I suspect that the family could have originated from Wales which is only 12 miles away from Hereford city. My reason for this is mainly we are a family generally on the short (5'6"-5'7" in height), stockily built, dark hair, premature gray, there is no baldness in our family. In other words, we look Welsh. There is little else I can tell you. I am an architect. My present position is Deputy City architect to the city of Auckland, N.Z., a position I've held for the last 17 years. Have been married 19 years and have two children Sarah Josephine Wainscott b. 1960 and Bramwell Martin Wainscott b. 1961. I have asked various members of the family to send me the family's records. Sincerely, yours, Ewen Wainscott p.s. The only Wainscott in Australia is Lindray, a cousin who was born in N.Z. (sic)
