NOTE: Phileman Wilhite owned one of the stores in Downsville, and the
stage coaches used his store for their rest stop. They also left
mail and messages for people in the area. In 1851, Wilhite made
application to the United States Post Office Department for
permission to establish a post office in his store. The post
office was established on June 9, 1851. The post office was dis-
continued on Sept 3, 1879, but reestablished two months later on
Nov 17, 1879. The post office operated until 1925 when the first
post office building was constructed. In 1956 a new post office
was constructed. From: An Encyclopedia of Union Parish History
