They also left mail and messages for people in the area. In 1851, Wilhite made application to the United States Post Office Department for permission to establish a post office in his store. The post office was established on June 9, 1851. The post office was dis- continued on Sept 3, 1879, but reestablished two months later on Nov 17, 1879. The post office operated until 1925 when the first post office building was constructed. In 1956 a new post office was constructed.
