Charlotte,
I often refer to your pages on Madison Co., KY and Boone Co., MO marriages. Wonderful work, thanks so
much. I'm contacting you in regards to a few dangling Roberts we have in my family. Reading your
Roberts pages, I have little doubt one or more of my mystery Roberts orphans belongs to you.

First I'll give you a very brief background on my folks.
My gg grandparents are David Sanders (b. SC 1803) and Rebecca Renfro who were married in Madison Co.,
KY in 1835.
David had 3 siblings in Madison Co., KY. They are:
Cynthia  (b. SC 1801) m. James Hagan;
Ausburn (b. SC 1806) m. Emily Mildred Renfro; and
Drucilla (b. KY 1818) m. James W. Land.
Also, have another sibling which we believe we recently located in Boone C., MO. He is
Drury Sanders born 1811 in York Dist., SC and arrived in Boone Co., MO in 1832 (from Madison Co., KY).
We're still missing last rumored sibling by name of Milton Sanders -- just in case you stumble across
him in Boone County. Parents of this group of low profile Sanders' were James Sanders and Ellen
McClurkin who were born in SC and left not a trace, save the afore mentioned uncooperative children.

Now to the Roberts connection. Rebecca Renfro, my gg grandmother (wife of David Sanders) was daughter
of Peter Renfro and Judith Land. Rebecca's brother (Peter and Judith's son) James M. Renfro, married
Mary Roberts 26 Sep 1849 with William Roberts as Bondsman.

Then, going back a generation to Judith Land's brother, Henry Land (m. Eleanor Hosic). Henry Land's
first 2 daughters, America and Lucinda married Roberts.
Lucinda Land (b. 1811) married John Roberts 10 Dec 1828.
America Land (b. 1809) married William F. Roberts 24 Dec 1829.

These 2 Roberts gentleman were of little interest to us until a lady by name of Susan Roberts entered
the fray. This is one fascinating lady. She was married first to James Hagan 11 Apr 1866, son of
James Hagan and Cynthia Sanders (sister of our David). After James died in 1873, she married William
Hagan in 1874. Bondsman was Clifton Shifflett, husband of a Margaret Roberts (for marriage of bondsman
Clifton to Margaret, an Aquilla Roberts, Father of Bride, gave Consent). Susan's marriage to Wylie
ended in divorce and in 1880 she and her children (of both marriages) are found in same census dwelling
with James W. Land and wife, Drucilla Sanders. Drucilla is our David's other sister and kid sister of
Cynthia, Susan's former mother-in-law. This more than anything sparked our curiosity in these Roberts.

Confused??? We sure are. These living arrangements seemed to suggest some kinship with Drucilla and
James W. Land beyond Drucilla as sister of Susan's mother-in-law. So far, it seems that the afore
mentioned Sanders siblings had very little to do with each other, much less take in one of the others
former daughter-in-law (and that after subsequent remarriage and divorce). Likewise the afore mentioned
Land/Roberts marriages of daughters of Drucilla's brother, David's wife Rebecca's mother's brother --
ha, ha, would be even more of a stretch (and require sentence structure beyond my capability). So we
are left suspecting some blood kinship between Drucilla's husband, James W. Land and Susan Roberts.

Bondsman for Susan's first marriage to James Hagan was Clifton Shifflet. Might be key to note that
Clifton was married to a Margaret Roberts (10 yrs earlier) and consent for that marriage was given by
an Aquilla Roberts, identified as the "Father of Bride". In your Madison Co marriage lists we find:

"Roberts, Quiller (Aquilla)--Land, Haily 158 Jan 01, 1826 Madison Co., KY"

And then in in the marriage book 1823-1851, we find:

"Quiller Roberts mar Hailey LAND 1 Jan 1826
BND; James Roberts Consent by; Polly Land
1 Jan 1826"

Looking at census', Haily is almost certainly Mahala and Quiller is Aquilla. Thus I have a hunch that
Hailey/Mahala and Polly Land (who gave consent) might lead us back to James W. Land.

So I plead for your help. Can you shed any Roberts light on this confusing picture??? Actually, this
is the norm for anyone who ever strayed too close to our Sanders' -- they were just sucked into oblivion.

As a foot note I should add that Susan Roberts, widow of James Hagan, who was divorced from William F.
Wylie, subsequently remarried at least 2 more times, to Richard T. Jones and finally to L. G. LaFollette.
She is buried in Hagan (1st husbands family) plot in Richmond Cemetary, Madison Co., KY as Susan Hagan
Lafollette b. Jan 5, 1840 d. Feb 11, 1920.

Sorry for length of this message, but everything about our family seems unduly complicated.

Many Thanks, Butch (aka Charles Sanders)

PS: Forgot to mention one other Roberts in this curious mix. A Jesse T. Roberts (b. 1839) m. Mary
Catherine Wylie, the sister of William F. Wylie (Susan's second husband).
