Craven Geography

by Ralph Taylor, 26 March 2007 -- revised 20 August 2008

Craven, indeed all the counties discussed on this site, lie on North Carolina's coastal plain. There are no mountains and few hills of note. The terrain is flat and filled with many creeks, branches, swamps (or former swamps) and pocosins. It is a rich agricultural area and has been heavily farmed.

Map: New Bern to Kinston
1865 Map, made near end of Civil War

This map plainly shows the dominance of the Neuse & Trent Rivers and the swamp between them. The diagonal line running from Kinston to New Bern & then south is the railroad.

Neuse, Trent, Broad Crk, Contentnea Crk., Southwest Crk
Neuse River Formerly known as the Gow-ta-no and Neusiok. It runs approximately northwest to southeast in Craven, Greene, Lenoir, Wayne & 6 other counties, meeting Pamlico Sound south of New Bern. Its eastern portion forms part of the Intracoastal Waterway, known to boaters. As an important “highway”, it is referenced in many deeds, but – due to its length & many twists – is an insufficient locator. Deeds often refer to the “south side” or “north side of the Neuse, but this can be misleading to the map reader. For much of its length in Craven, the Neuse runs north to south and has a primarily west side (“south”) and east side (“north”). This river also runs south to north for a stretch in Lenoir County. We will use both sorts of terms when confusion would otherwise result. Maps = several, USGS ID = 1013910 Head
